The Golden Slipper is a Grade II listed pub in the city centre of York, England.The pub lies on Goodramgate. It was originally constructed about 1500 as a house, with the north-eastern half the building dating from this period. This section is three storeys high and timber-framed. Its facade is jettied to the street, and rendered over. To its right, it originally overhung an alleyway, but the neighbouring Royal Oak has since extended into this space. In the 18th-century, it was extended to the rear, in brick, with an attic added to this section in the 19th-century.The south-western half of the building dates from the 19th-century. It is brick-built and of two storeys, with a basement and attic. Internally, the building has been frequently altered and does not retain any original features. Its ground floor, based around a corridor, is largely Victorian, but was partly redesigned in 1983, against the objections of the Campaign for Real Ale.The older half of the building may have already been a pub in the 18th-century, named the Show, the name taken either from a greyhound, or as an alternative spelling of "shoe". By 1812, it was The Slipper, becoming The Golden Slipper in the 20th-century.There are stories of the pub being haunted, with ghosts said to manifest themselves when the building is being decorated. The haunting was linked to the discovery of a Mediaeval children's shoe in 1984, during work at the pub. The building was later exorcised.

The Dutch House is a historic house, lying on Ogleforth, in the city centre of York, in England. The house was built in brick in about 1650, with Andrew Graham dating it to 1648. It is a small building and originally had two rooms on the ground floor and one on the first floor. Later in the 17th-century, two Dutch gables were added to the front, each with a dormer window. Originally, it is believed to have had only an external staircase, suggesting that it was not a domestic building.In the 18th century, the building's interior was heavily altered, and by the early 19th century, it had been divided into three tenements. In 1954, it was Grade II* listed but it was in a poor state of repair, and in 1956, John Smith's Brewery announced plans to demolish it. Instead, the York Civic Trust restored the building, with much of the front wall entirely rebuilt, as a copy of the original. It then formed part of the brewery, but in 2010 was converted to accommodation, and has since been available to let for holidays. This more recent work won a York Design Award.The building is of two storeys and an attic. It is four bays wide, with the leftmost bay having no windows or doors. The other three all differ: a window with three lights on each floor in the second bay, a round-headed door with an oriel window above in the third bay, and a smaller first floor window in the fourth bay, with the ground floor window having been filled in, though its pediment remains.

30 and 32 Goodramgate and 11 and 12 College Street is a Grade II* listed building in the city centre of York, in England. The building lies on the corner of Goodramgate and College Street. The part facing College Street was constructed in the early-14th century, while the part facing Goodramgate was constructed in the 1380s or 1390s as part of a terrace of houses, replacing a large stone house which belonged to John le Romeyn. The structure also includes a gatehouse which is believed to represent an entrance to the Mediaeval Minster Close, but which was completely rebuilt about 1600. The main parts of the building were altered in the 18th- and 19th-centuries, when much of the timber was replaced with brickwork.By 1752, part of the building was in use as the Angel Inn. The Goodramgate façade is of 2 stories and 4 bays, and includes a double-storey gatehouse built in the 18th-century. The ground floor of the entire building is currently in use as shops and cafes, with part occupied by the National Trust. It was listed at grade II* in 1954.

Cromwell House is a grade II* listed house on Ogleforth, in the city centre of York, in England. The house was built in about 1700, and is of two storeys, with an attic. It is roughly square in plan. The rear half of the house is lower than the front part, and was originally under two separate roofs, each with its own gable, an arrangement altered in the 19th century. Between the two parts of the rear half is a timber-framed partition, which survives from an earlier building on the site, and the roof also has much reused timber. The interior was remodelled in about 1760, from which time the staircase survives.The principle interest of the house lies in its facade, which the Royal Commission on Historic Monuments described as "architecturally ambitious". It is of five bays, and originally had pilasters at each end, one of which survives. It also originally had an entablature running the full width of the second storey, which has also been lost. The doorway has a moulded stone surround. The ground and first floor windows are all 12-pane sashes, while the pediment has three small rectangular windows flanked by a pair of oval windows.In 1974, the front of the house was rebuilt, and the rear gable demolished in the 19th century was rebuilt. The building was renovated in about 1980, for use as offices, but in 2011, it was converted into flats

The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar (formerly known as the Richard III Museum) was located in Monk Bar, the tallest of the four gatehouses in the historical city walls of York, England. It described the life of Richard III, the last king of the Plantagenet dynasty. The museum explored Richard's early life, and the battles that raged between the houses of Lancaster and York during the Wars of the Roses. It described his reign and his death at the Battle of Bosworth, alongside multimedia presentations about the key battles of the Wars of the Roses. There was also arms and armour from his reign, including the only known fragment of a gun from that period.In 2014, the York Archaeological Trust's Jorvik Group (which operates the Jorvik Viking Centre) took over the space within Monk Bar that had housed the Richard III Museum since 1993, and created "The Richard III Experience at Monk Bar". They also replaced the contents of the Micklegate Bar Museum and created "The Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar".The museum, along with other visitor attractions operated by the Jorvik Group, closed in 2020 at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. When the group's larger sites reopened in July 2020 the Richard III and Henry VII experiences remained closed owing to their limited capacity for social distancing. The Henry VII Experience was replaced by the City Walls Experience which opened in April 2022.

41–45 Goodramgate is a grade I listed building in the city centre of York, in England. Most of the building was constructed in 1500: a three-storey, five-bay range facing onto the east side Goodramgate, and a single-storey hall behind its northern part. It probably originated as the house of a wealthy citizen, with a shop at the front. Early in the 1600s, a further two-storey building was constructed south of the single-storey range about six feet away from it, and the gap between the two was closed up soon after. A passageway ran back-to-front through the central part of the building.By 1800, the front of the building had been plastered over, and shop windows had been installed in the ground floor, with leaded lights in the windows above. These were replaced by sash windows by the end of the century. Both 41 and 43 Goodramgate were refronted in brick during the 1800s. The property was bought by Cuthbert Morrell in the 1920s, and in 1929, Walter Brierley and Harvey Rutherford restored the building. They removed the external plaster to reveal the timber framing, all internal partitions erected over the past few centuries were removed, and the passageway was closed off.The building now forms three properties. 41 Goodramgate is of four stories, its attic having been converted into an extra floor, while 43 Goodramgate is the same height but of only three stories, its floor heights having been altered. 45 Goodramgate is the largest property, incorporating both the buildings to the rear. It is the only one to retain its jettied front. Although there are windows in the roof, added in 1929, it remains of three stories, the roof windows providing extra illumination for the second floor. The timber framing inside is largely intact, although heavily restored. Few other original fixtures remain although there is a cornice and simple fireplace on the first floor.45 Goodramgate was listed in 1954, as an example of a rare building type, with few examples known nationally, while 41 and 43 Goodramgate were added to the listing in 1971. In 1957, 45 Goodramgate was donated to the York Civic Trust, who lease it out for use as a restaurant. 41 and 43 Goodramgate are a separate cafe and shop.

The Snickleway Inn is a grade II* listed pub, in the city centre of York, in England. The pub lies on Goodramgate, next to the Wealden Hall. The oldest part is the front section of the building, constructed about 1500, at the same time as the neighbouring hall. It is three stories high and four bays wide. In the 17th-century, a wing was added, and in the mid-19th century, this was altered, while the building was refronted. To the rear, there is an outbuilding, which was constructed in about 1600, and has been extensively rebuilt in several phases. The whole building is timber-framed throughout, with some brick infill, while the front is plastered over.The building has been used as a pub from at least the 18th-century. It was originally named the "Painters' Arms", then successively became the "Square and Compasses" (c. 1818), the "Mason's Arms" (c. 1823), "The Board" (c. 1841) and the "Joiner's Arms" (c. 1851). By 1872, it was renamed as the "Anglers' Arms". In 1994, while Frank Cartin was the landlord, it was renamed as "The Snickleway Inn", referencing the snickelways of York, but deliberately misspelling the word, to avoid copyright issues.The York Press named the pub as one of the five most haunted in the city, claiming that it is home to five spirits, including Mrs Tulliver and her cat, Seamus. Another ghost is said to be Marmaduke Buckle, a disabled man who lived in the early 18th-century, who committed suicide while living in the property.

The Wealden Hall is a grade I listed building on Goodramgate in the city centre of York, in England. The building was constructed in about 1500. It is a wealden hall house, which by the date was a common design in South East England, but rare in York. The Wealden Hall and 1 Tanner Row, also in the city, are the two northernmost surviving examples of wealden halls.Using the standard wealden hall design, the building originally had a central hall, with double storey bays either side. In this case, the design was end-on to the street, and, unusually, only the front bays were jettied. In front of the hall, a three-storey range was constructed to face the street. Remain of two windows survive from the original construction, although they were originally unglazed and probably closed with shutters. The rear never had any openings, suggesting that it may have directly abutted another structure. The size of the house, and its jettying, suggests that it was built for a wealthy owner.From the 16th-century on, many alterations were made to the building: new walls and chimneys were added, attics were constructed, and a first floor was inserted into the hall. The front of the building was plastered, probably in 1700, a date which is now inscribed on the front of the building. The eastern part of the front range became a separate building, now The Snickleway Inn.In 1930, the building was bought by Cuthbert Morrell, for restoration, which was conducted by the architect Harvey Rutherford. Among other changes, he restored the hall to its former dimensions, and removed the plaster from the street front, to reveal the timber framing. The building now belongs to the York Conservation Trust and houses shops, with offices above. It has also been used for exhibitions, like one in 2012 focusing on the culture of homelessness in the city.

St William's College is a Mediaeval building in York in England, originally built to provide accommodation for priests attached to chantry chapels at nearby York Minster. It is a Grade I listed building.The college was founded in 1460 by George Neville and the Earl of Warwick to house twenty-three priests and a provost. It was named after St William of York. In 1465, work started on the present building. This courtyard structure may incorporate parts of two earlier houses. It included a great hall to the north, with a chapel to its east. The hall survives in part, but its ceiling has been lowered and the plasterwork was replaced in 1910. The posts of a screens passage also remain, the other side of which is the fireplace of the original kitchen. It has been suggested that doorways led off the courtyard to staircases, with rooms for the provost and fellows of the college leading off them. While the college was not a monastic establishment, it was affected by the Dissolution of the Monasteries, as in 1548 the building was converted to a substantial house, with later tenants including Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle. Around this time, a single main staircase was added, which survives, while a room to the south-west has remains of wall paintings from this era. In the seventeenth century, the "Bishop's Chamber" was created on the first floor, to the west of the great hall, and it survives largely intact. In the eighteenth-century, part of the ground floor was used for retail, and bow windows were added, which still survive. Otherwise, the façade generally survives as built, with an ashlar ground floor and a timber-framed, jettied upper floor. The doorway itself is a replacement, but the coats of arms above are from about 1670, and carvings of Saint Christopher and the Virgin and Child either side of the entrance also survive.
