Loanhead railway station

Loanhead is a town in Midlothian, Scotland, in a commuter belt to the south of Edinburgh, and close to Roslin, Bonnyrigg and Dalkeith. The town was built on coal and oil shale mining, and the paper industries.

Mavisbank is a country house outside Loanhead, south of Edinburgh in Midlothian, Scotland. It was designed by architect William Adam in collaboration with his client, Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, and was constructed between 1723 and 1727. The first Palladian villa in Scotland, it is described by Historic Scotland as "one of Scotland's most important country houses". It was altered in the 19th century, but suffered decades of neglect in the 20th century. The interiors were gutted by fire in 1973, and the house remains a ruin. As of May 2009, plans exist to partially restore the building and manage the estate as a community asset.

Polton railway station served the village of Polton, Midlothian, Scotland from 1867 to 1964 on the Esk Valley Railway.

Stewart Brewing is an independent craft brewery based on the outskirts of Edinburgh in Loanhead, Midlothian, Scotland. It was established in 2004 by Steve and Jo Stewart. It produces beer in small batches, which are available in approximately 200 real ale pubs in Edinburgh, the Lothians, Fife, the Borders, Glasgow and Newcastle. It also sells mini casks and bottled beers from its brewery shop. There is also a tasting room in Leith. Stewart Brewing also has a range of canned and bottled beers, launched at the end of 2009.

Polton is a village located in Lasswade parish, Midlothian, Scotland, anciently a superiority of the Ramsay family, cadets of Dalhousie. In 1618 David Ramsay of Polton was in possession. (See: Analecta Scotica, Edinburgh, 1834).

Hawthornden Castle is located on the River North Esk in Midlothian, Scotland. The castle lies a mile to the east of Roslin at grid reference NT287637, and is just downstream from Roslin Castle. Hawthornden comprises a 15th-century ruin, with a 17th-century L-plan house attached. The house has been restored and now serves as a writer's retreat. Man-made caves in the rock beneath the castle have been in use for much longer than the castle itself.

Burdiehouse is an area in the south east of Edinburgh, Scotland, near Gilmerton and Southhouse. Its name is often said to be a corruption of Bordeaux, as a result of settlement in the area by French immigrants associated with Mary, Queen of Scots (cf Little France nearby), but this is by no means certain. Today, Burdiehouse is an area with a high level of residents living in poverty. The Burdiehouse Burn (known elsewhere as the Lothian Burn, Niddrie Burn and Brunstane Burn) flows through the area.

Wallace's Cave is situated in Roslin Glen, in Midlothian, Scotland. It is also known as Hawthornden Castle Cave, after Hawthornden Castle which is nearby. It takes its name from William Wallace, the Scottish national hero, who participated in the Battle of Roslin, which took place close to the cave on 24 February 1303.

Rosewell and Hawthornden railway station served the village of Rosewell, Midlothian, Scotland from 1855 to 1962 on the Peebles Railway.

Gorton is a locality, in the parish of Lasswade, in Midlothian, Scotland. The locality is the location of Old Gorton House, a 17th century dwelling. A series of caves exist nearby and have carvings inside. The caves also appear to have been used during the Wars of Scottish Independence, with one known as Wallace’s Cave. William St. Clair of Roslin acquired the Knights Templar lands of Gourton from Walter fitz Stephen de Meliville in the 13th century. The Lizar family were lords of Gorton in the 12th century.

Gracemount High School (GHS) is a non-denominational six-year comprehensive secondary school serving south-east Edinburgh, Scotland. It has a current roll of over 600 pupils and around 80 staff. It is operated by City of Edinburgh Council, the local education authority. No current inspection report is available and it was last inspected in 2013.The school has developed an approach to pupils personal development it refers to as the Gracemount Guarantee and the senior phase (S5 and S6) is based on personalisation and choice from a range of vocational and academic qualifications. League tables, published in 2019, ranking the percentage of pupils attaining five or more awards at SCQF Level 6 (Scottish Higher) in 2019, placed Gracemount High at 331 out of 339 schools with 13 per cent; the Scottish Government benchmark figure for GHS was 22. The Scottish Government's school information dashboard for Gracemount High shows attainment levels at SCQF Level 3 in S3 at over 90 per cent for reading and listening and talking in 2018-19; 73 per cent of pupils leave with at least one award at SCQF level 5 or better.

Roslin railway station served the village of Roslin, Midlothian, Scotland, from 1874 to 1959 on the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin Railway.
