Nassau Lake, New York

Nassau Lake is a reservoir located in Rensselaer County, New York. Jonathan Hoag, who settled in Nassau in 1792, purchased of Patroon Stephen Van Rensselaer, several hundred acres of land on and adjoining the site of the village of Nassau. The body of water now known as Nassau Lake was then named Hoag's Pond. It was created by Hoag by constructing a dam which covered "the Vlaie" or "Beaver Meadow" with water.Nassau Lake and its dam are owned and maintained by the Nassau Lake Park Improvement Association. Use of the lake and association properties are reserved for members of the association. The land surrounding the lake includes the hamlets of Morey Park (at the north end), Braeside (on the west side of the lake), and Rosecrans Park (at the south end). The entire land surrounding the lake is part of the Nassau Lake census-designated place. There is currently a ban on fish consumption in Nassau Lake due to contamination from the Dewey Loeffel Landfill.

Albany Avenue Historic District is a national historic district located at Nassau in Rensselaer County, New York. It consists of 10 contributing buildings. They date from about 1800 to about 1920 and include seven Federal styles residences, two early 20th century residences, and one Greek Revival temple-style residence.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

They include a variety of residential and ecclesiastical building. New England Federal style buildings predominate, with a number of notable Victorian period buildings, including a Second Empire residence dated to the 1870s. Notable churches include St. Mary's Church (1925), Nassau Reformed Church (1901), and Grace United Methodist Church (1833).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Chatham Street Row, also known as the Chatham Street Historic District, is a set of five historic buildings located at Nassau in Rensselaer County, New York. They were built between 1812 and 1880. They include the Vandenberg House (No. 18, 1870), Louisa Heusted House (No. 20, ca. 1880), and the Heusted Store (No. 14, 1864). The Vandenberg House and Louisa Heusted House are notable for the decorative scrollwork on their verandah. Also included is the Phillip Cook House (No. 16, 1812), a five bay, brick Federal style dwelling and the Parsonage (No. 22, 1839).It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

Henry Tunis Smith Farm, also known as the Middlebrook Farm, is a historic farmhouse located at Nassau in Rensselaer County, New York. The house was built in 1789 in the Federal style. It consists of a 1+1⁄2-story main block, five bays wide, with a 1-story, three-bay wing. The front facade features a finely detailed frieze.It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975.The house sits on a historic property that traces back to the 17th century Dutch Manor of Rensselaerswyck Rensselaerswyck was a Dutch estate of approximately 1,200 sq. miles comprising the present Albany, Columbia and Rensselaer counties. The Dutch Patroon Stephen Van Rensselaer devised a solution to sustain the financial viability of the land without selling it. He divided the estate into parcels and granted tenants perpetual leases at moderate rates of about one percent of the land's output. Eventually, about 900 farms of 150 acres were established. The solution greatly increased the productivity for the land and generated large economic benefit for the entire Albany area. The current farm property includes the original parcel leased from Van Rensselaer.

The Dewey Loeffel Landfill is an EPA superfund site located in Rensselaer County, New York. In the 1950s and 1960s, several companies including General Electric, Bendix Corporation and Schenectady Chemicals used the site as a disposal facility for more than 46,000 tons of industrial hazardous wastes, including solvents, waste oils, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), scrap materials, sludges and solids. Some hazardous substances, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and PCBs, have migrated from the facility to underlying aquifers and downstream surface water bodies, resulting in contamination of groundwater, surface water, sediments and several species of fish. There is currently a ban on fish consumption in Nassau Lake and the impacted tributaries. Site investigations are underway to determine the nature and extent of the contamination and inform the development of permanent cleanup options for the site. In 1986, Schenectady Chemicals agreed that it would pay $496,500 toward the cleanup effort.

Peck House is a historic Greek Revival-style home located in the hamlet of North Chatham in Columbia County, New York. It was reconstructed about 1848 and is an imposing, 2-story, symmetrical, five-bay-wide and one-bay-deep dwelling with a substantial 1+1⁄2-story rear wing. It features a three-bay, 1-story porch with Doric order columns. The interior features a number of Greek Revival–style details. Also on the property is a brick smoke house.It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. It is also included as a contributing building in the North Chatham Historic District, which was added to the National Register in 2012. Peck House is located at the intersection of County Road 32 and New York State Route 203.

North Chatham is a hamlet in Columbia County, New York, United States. The community is located along New York State Route 203 3.2 miles (5.1 km) south-southwest of Nassau and 4.9 miles (7.9 km) north-northeast of Valatie. North Chatham has a post office with ZIP code 12132.Most or all of the hamlet is included in the North Chatham Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

North Chatham Historic District is a historic district consisting of most or all of the hamlet of North Chatham in Columbia County, New York. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2023.The district then included 110 contributing buildings, 21 contributing structures, two contributing sites, and one contributing object. The center of the district, along the north-south New York State Route 203, has most of the buildings. Included in the north end of the district is a small traffic triangle where NYS 203, Bunker Hill Rd., and County Road 32 intersect. A segment of the historic district including the North Chatham Depot extends north and west of that along Bunker Hill Rd., County Road 32 and Depot St. At the south end of the district are a few buildings on County Road 17 and Dorn Rd. And hidden from direct view is a mill yard which was the "industrial core" of North Chatham. North Chatham developed between about 1785 and 1930, and includes notable examples of Federal, Greek Revival, Gothic Revival, Italianate, and Queen Anne style architecture. Located in the district is the separately listed Peck House. Other notable buildings include the Methodist Church (1867), the North Chatham Depot (a trolley station built c. 1900), and cider mill (c. 1880).
