Raven Crag

The Thirlmere Aqueduct is a 95.9-mile-long (154.3-kilometre-long) pioneering section of water supply system in England, built by the Manchester Corporation Water Works between 1890 and 1925. Often incorrectly thought of as one of the longest tunnels in the world, the aqueduct's tunnel section is not continuous. The aqueduct was built to carry approximately 55,000,000 imperial gallons (250,000 m3) per day of water from Thirlmere Reservoir to Manchester. The construction of the reservoir and aqueduct was authorised by the Manchester Waterworks Act of Parliament. The first phase was completed in 1897 and, for the pipeline sections, subsequent phases were completed in 1925. The first water to arrive in Manchester from the Lake District was marked with an official ceremony on 13 October 1894. Thirlmere Woods is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within Lake District National Park in Cumbria, England. This protected area is located at the northern end of the Thirlmere reservoir, near the village of Legburthwaite. The protected area includes Great How Wood, The Benn and Bull Crag Wood.

Legburthwaite is a village in the Allerdale district, in the county of Cumbria. It is located on the A591 road and the B5322 road. Legburthwaite has a disused place of worship and formerly, a youth hostel. It is just north of Thirlmere.

High Seat is a fell in the centre of the English Lake District. Despite being below 2,000 ft it is the highest point for about 5 miles (8 km) in any direction; a consequence of the curious fact that the centre of the district is lower than the surrounding parts.

Bell Crags (also known as Long Moss or Blea Tarn Fell) is a hill of 559.1 metres (1,834 ft) in the Lake District, England. It lies between Borrowdale to its west and Thirlmere to its east, and is north of Ullscarf. Below it to the west is one of several Lake District tarns named Blea Tarn, this one flowing out via Bleatarn Gill to Watendlath Tarn. Bell Crags is a Fellranger, being included in Mark Richards' The Old Man of Coniston, Swirl How, Wetherlam and the South as one of the 18 (now 21) of his 227 (230 with the extension of the national park) summits which are not in Alfred Wainwright's list of 214. It is also classified as a Dodd, Dewey, Birkett and Synge. The highest point is a boulder 85 metres (279 ft) north of the cairn.Richards describes Bell Crags as "a great viewpoint above low crags and the morass of Launchy Gill" and "the wedge of rough country rising west from the shores of Thirlmere between Launchy and Dob Gills, initially as craggy afforestation but later as a wonderfully wild fell", and describes ascent routes from both Thirlmere and Watendlath.There are several other places named Bell Crags including a hill of 332 metres (1,089 ft) in Northumberland, about 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) west of the Pennine Way and about 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) north of Hadrian's Wall.

Armboth Fell is a fell in the English Lake District, regarded by Alfred Wainwright as the centre of Lakeland. It is named for the former settlement of Armboth. The fell is a domed plateau, three-quarters of a mile across, jutting out to the east of the Derwentwater-Thirlmere watershed, in the Borough of Allerdale. The fell is wet underfoot, with large areas clad in heather. The eastern slopes above Thirlmere have been planted with conifers.

Thirlmere is a reservoir in the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria and the English Lake District. The Helvellyn ridge lies to the east of Thirlmere. To the west of Thirlmere are a number of fells; for instance, Armboth Fell and Raven Crag both of which give views of the lake and of Helvellyn beyond. It runs roughly south to north and is bordered on the eastern side for much of its length by the A591 road and on the western side by a minor road. It occupies the site of a former natural lake: this had a fordable waist so narrow that it was (and is) sometimes regarded as two lakes. In the 19th century Manchester Corporation constructed a dam at the northern end, raising the water level, flooding the valley bottom, and creating a reservoir to provide the growing industrial city of Manchester with water supplies via the 96 mile-long Thirlmere Aqueduct. The reservoir and the aqueduct still provide water to the Manchester area, but under the Water Act 1973 ownership passed to the North West Water Authority; as a result of subsequent privatisation and amalgamation they (and the catchment area surrounding the reservoir) are now owned and managed by United Utilities, a private water and wastewater company.

Fornside, part of an area known as St John's in the Vale, is a hamlet in the Lake District National Park of Cumbria, England. It is located about 4 miles as the crow flies to the southeast of Keswick, along the B5322 road. The name is believed to be of Scandinavian origin, Forn meaning "old" or "former". The hamlet contains little more than self-catering cottages belonging to Fornside Farm, and 'The Studio', the former house of an artist which was "originally a barn adjoining Fornside House and is about 250 years old". There is also an old green Residential Carriage at Fornside, despite there being no nearby railway. The farmer owners Robert and Pam Hall rear Herdwick sheep. On the western side is the Sosgill and Righause woods. Fornside is mentioned in Hall Caine's novel The Shadow of a Crime and visited by the character of Rotha.

High Rigg is a small fell located in the English Lake District, approximately three miles southeast of the town of Keswick. It occupies an unusual position, surrounded on all sides by higher fells but not connected by any obvious ridge. This separation from its fellows ensures that it is a Marilyn (a hill with topographic prominence of at least 150m).

Bleaberry Fell is a fell in the Lake District in Cumbria, England, with a height of 590 metres (1,936 ft). It stands on the main watershed between Borrowdale and Thirlmere and can be climbed from either flank. Walla Crag is a subsidiary top of Bleaberry Fell.

High Tove is a fell in the English Lake District, close to the geographical centre of the Cumbrian hills. It forms part of the watershed between the Derwentwater and Thirlmere catchments, a ridge running broadly north-south.

St John's Church is in the valley of St John's in the Vale, Cumbria, England. It is an active Anglican parish church in the deanery of Derwent, the archdeaconry of West Cumberland, and the diocese of Carlisle. Its benefice is united with those of St Mary, Threlkeld, and Wythburn Church. The church is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade II listed building.
