Orleans Square (Savannah, Georgia)

Harper Fowlkes House is a historic building in Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is located at 230 Barnard Street, in the southeastern trust lot of Orleans Square, and was built in 1844. It is in the Greek Revival style.

The Bulloch–Habersham House (originally the Archibald Bulloch House) was a mansion in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Completed in 1820, to a design by noted architect William Jay, it stood at the corner of Barnard Street and West Perry Street, in the southwestern trust lot of Orleans Square, until its demolition in 1916. It was replaced by what is now Savannah Civic Center. Historian John D. Duncan described the building's demise as "one of the worst cases of metropolitan malfeasance to be documented in an era when the preservation movement was just beginning to gain attention."In 1819, during the building's construction, Jay was fined $30 for obstructing Barnard Street.Originally the home of Archibald Stobo Bulloch Jr. (whose father was Georgia's first non-royal head of state), the home contained several pieces of furniture by New York City cabinetmaker Charles-Honoré Lannuier. Savannah's great fire of 1820 decimated Bulloch's fortune, and he was forced to sell his family's home to John Morel and David Leion. Morel and Leion converted the mansion into a boarding house. In 1834, it was purchased by Robert Habersham, a Savannah merchant and planter. After Habersham's death in 1870, it passed to his son, William Neyle Habersham. The home was maintained by Habersham's heirs until 1905, six years after William's death. In 1915, it was purchased by the City of Savannah, shortly after which it was demolished. The house had a broad central hall with two 20-foot wide rooms on each side, a circular domed drawing room, a spiral staircase cantilevered within a circle of six Corinthian columns, unusual tripartite windows on the main floor, and a double drawing room with Corinthian and Ionic column screens. A figural mantel in the style of Richard Westmacott Jr., graced the north-east drawing room, and carved Egyptian masks were part of the decorative vocabulary.Habersham Memorial Hall, in Atlanta, Georgia, was designed to replicate the home. It was completed in 1923.

The John Ash House is a building in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Standing at 114–116 West Hull Street, it is located in the northeastern residential block of Orleans Square and was built in 1817. Built as a home for John Ash, a farmer who became a judge and member of the first Alabama Senate, it is now part of the Savannah Historic District and is the oldest building in Orleans Square.In a survey for Historic Savannah Foundation, Mary Lane Morrison found the building to be of significant status and rated as "exceptional." It was documented by the Historical American Building Survey in the mid-20th century, when its significance was noted due to being a "good example of Federal, Adamesque style."

First Baptist Church is a historic congregation in Savannah, Georgia, which was first established in 1800. Today, the congregation worships in a Greek-Revival church building on Bull Street, on the western side of Chippewa Square in the historic district of Savannah. This location has been the congregation’s home since 1833 and the building is architecturally significant, being the oldest surviving church building in Savannah.When initially chartered in 1800, the congregation worshipped at a meeting house on Franklin Square. The church received its perpetual charter the following year by Georgia Governor Josiah Tattnall. The current church building was designed by architect Elias Carter. The cornerstone was laid on February 2, 1831, and two years later, with construction complete, the congregation relocated to its present location. Six years after moving into the current building, the growing congregation began renovations to expand the sanctuary.The church's organ, the work of Ernest M. Skinner, was installed in 1922.By 1947, the congregation was using the name "First" Baptist Church to distinguish itself from other Baptist congregations in the city. It is one of the few Southern churches to have remained open through the entirety of the American Civil War. The church utilized local architect Henrik Wallin for the notable alterations that occurred in 1922. Renovations included extending the front of the building, cladding the building in limestone, and removing the cupola.Previous pastors include W. L. Pickard, later president of Mercer University, and Norman Cox, the executive secretary of the Historical Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Philbrick–Eastman House is a historic building in Savannah, Georgia, United States. Built in 1847, in the Greek Revival style, it is located at 17 West McDonough Street in the southwestern trust/civic lot of Chippewa Square. Designed by Charles B. Cluskey, it was once known as "the finest home in the city."Originally two floors, a third was added in 1911.The building was extensively renovated into commercial office space in the 1950s, while a 2015 rehabilitation project kept many of the alterations in order to maintain the accuracy of the architectural evolution of the structure, which was originally meant to be the residence of Moses Eastman (1794–1850), a local silversmith, but it was initially the home of Samuel Philbrick (1793–1855), and by the time of its completion, in 1847, that of John Stoddard (1809–1879), later president of the Georgia Historical Society. An elevator from 1912 and a steel vault from 1953 were preserved, and glass partitions were added to mirror the open floor plan of the mid-20th century stenographer's pool.In 2016, the building's redevelopers won an "Excellence in Rehabilitation" award from the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation.As of 2021, it is the headquarters of The Parker Companies.The building's iron railings feature medallions of prominent men.It is included in the Savannah Historic District

Bird Girl is a sculpture made in 1936 by Sylvia Shaw Judson in Lake Forest, Illinois. It was sculpted at Ragdale, her family's summer home, and achieved fame when it was featured on the cover of the 1994 non-fiction novel Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Originally exhibited as Girl with Bowls at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1938, it was also exhibited as Fountain Figure, Standing Figure, and Peasant Girl. A 1967 book by Judson first referred to it as Bird Girl.

The Independent Presbyterian Church of Savannah, on Bull Street in Savannah, Georgia, is the first Presbyterian church in Georgia, founded in 1755. Land for its first building was deeded by King George II of Great Britain for use by colonial adherents of the Church of Scotland. The first building burned down in 1796, and another modeled after St. Martin in the Fields was built in 1800. This building burned down in 1889 and a reproduction was completed in 1891.The current minister is Terry Johnson, who is a minister in the Presbyterian Church in America. It is included in the Savannah Historic District

Trinity Methodist Church, located in Savannah, Georgia, was built in 1848. It stands in the southwestern trust/civic block of Telfair Square. The trustees of Wesley Chapel, named for Methodist preacher John Wesley and located on what was formerly known as South Broad Street (today's Oglethorpe Avenue), purchased the land on which the church stands in 1848 in order to build a sanctuary to house their growing congregation. Its foundation stone was laid on February 14, 1848. The first service was held in the Corinthian order structure, designed by John B. Hogg, in 1850.In 1895, Robert McIntire donated funds for the construction of a Sunday School building. This building was replaced in 1927 by a modern, four-storey building. This building was destroyed by fire in 1991. The sanctuary was renovated in 1967, restoring the original 1848 design. In 2005, the church's exterior was restored, a project which won Historic Savannah Foundation's Award of Excellence.The church's senior pastor is Ben Gosden.

The James Oglethorpe Monument is a public monument in Chippewa Square, Savannah, Georgia, United States. The monument honors James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Province of Georgia, who established the city of Savannah in 1733. Efforts towards the monument's erection began in 1901 and were led by members of several patriotic groups in the city, who secured government funding for the monument. The monument consists of a bronze statue of Oglethorpe, designed by Daniel Chester French, atop a large granite pedestal designed by Henry Bacon. It was dedicated in 1910, in a ceremony that attracted several thousand spectators and was attended by several notable government officials.

Pulaski Square is one of the 22 squares of Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is located in the fourth row of the city's five rows of squares, on Barnard Street and West Macon Street, and was laid out in 1837. It is south of Orleans Square, west of Madison Square and north of Chatham Square. It is known for its live oaks. The oldest buildings on the square are the Theodosius Bartow House (126 West Harris Street) and the Bernard Constantine House (218 West Harris Street), which date to 1839.The square is named for General Casimir Pulaski, a Polish-born Revolutionary War hero who died of wounds received in the siege of Savannah (1779). It is one of the few squares without a monument; General Pulaski's statue (and, likely, his remains) is in nearby Monterey Square.Prior to the birth of the historical preservation movement and the restoration of much of Savannah's downtown, Pulaski sheltered a sizeable homeless population and was one of several squares that had been paved to allow traffic to drive straight through its center.The square is one of the few to have a parking lot occupy one of its blocks (in this case the northeastern trust lot).

Chippewa Square is one of the 22 squares of Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is located in the middle row of the city's five rows of squares, on Bull Street and McDonough Street, and was laid out in 1815. It is south of Wright Square, west of Colonial Park Cemetery, north of Madison Square and east of Orleans Square. The oldest building on the square is The Savannah Theatre, at 222 Bull Street, which dates to 1818. The square named in honor of American soldiers killed in the Battle of Chippawa during the War of 1812. (The spelling "Chippewa" is correct in reference to this square.) In the center of the square is the James Oglethorpe Monument, created by sculptor Daniel Chester French and architect Henry Bacon and unveiled in 1910. Oglethorpe faces south, toward Georgia's one-time enemy in Spanish Florida, and his sword is drawn. Busts of Confederate figures Francis Stebbins Bartow and Lafayette McLaws were moved from Chippewa Square to Forsyth Park to make room for the Oglethorpe monument. Due to the location of the monument, Savannahians sometimes refer to this as Oglethorpe Square, but that is located just to the northeast.The "park bench" scene which opens the 1994 film Forrest Gump was filmed on the north side of Chippewa Square. The bench was a fiberglass prop, rather than one of the park's actual benches. A replica of the prop bench used in the film is on display at the Savannah Visitors Center. The original prop is now kept in Paramount Studios, Los Angeles.Chippewa Square is also home to the First Baptist Church (1833), the Independent Presbyterian Church and the Philbrick–Eastman House (1847).

Telfair Square is one of the 22 squares of Savannah, Georgia, United States. It is located in the second row of the city's five rows of squares, on Barnard Street and West President Street, and was laid out in 1733 as one of the first four squares. It is south of Ellis Square, west of Wright Square and north of Orleans Square. Liberty Square formerly stood to its west but was later paved over. The oldest building on the square is Telfair Academy, at 121 Barnard Street, which dates to 1818–1820.Originally named St. James Square, in honor of a green space in London, and marked one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in early Savannah, it was renamed in 1883 to honor the Telfair family. It is the only square honoring a family rather than an individual. The Telfairs included former Governor Edward Telfair, Congressman Thomas Telfair (Edward Telfair's son), and his daughter Mary Telfair (1791–1875), benefactor of Savannah's Telfair Museum of Art. The square also contains tributes to the Girl Scouts of the USA, founded by Savannahian Juliette Gordon Low, and to the chambered nautilus.
