Hickory Island

Meso Island is an island in the Detroit River. It is in Wayne County, in southeast Michigan. Its coordinates are 42°05′30″N 83°09′10″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 584 ft (178 m) in 1980. Numerous types of fish spawn at the island; a 1982 report by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service listed northern pike,: 10 carp,: 13 bullhead catfish,: 19 rock bass,: 22  and bluegill.: 23 

The East River Road–North Hickory Canal Bridge is a bridge located on East River Road over the North Hickory Canal, connecting Grosse Ile, Michigan with Hickory Island to the south. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Sugar Island is a small island in the Detroit River between Grosse Ile and Boblo Island. Sugar Island is part of Grosse Ile Township, Wayne County, Michigan, United States, and lies about 0.5 miles (0.80 km) west of the border with Canada. Currently the island is uninhabited and was recently converted to a wildlife refuge by the US Fish and Wildlife service (see below). The majority of the island is wooded and it is known for its white sandy beaches and easy access by boat. In the early part of the 20th century (c. 1900-1940), Sugar Island was the site of a resort park and large dance pavilion. Access to the island was by steam ferry, including the SS Tashmoo. Tashmoo met her fate on the night of June 18, 1936 while departing Sugar Island she struck a rock. She was able to land her passengers in Amherstburg, Ontario before sinking.For many years Sugar island was held in private ownership with plans to build a bridge and residential housing on the island. There were objections to this plan, mainly by environmental groups, as the island is a resting point for many species of migratory birds. The island was recently purchased by the US Fish and Wildlife service for $434,100 and will be made into a wildlife refuge.

Round Island is an island in the Detroit River in southeast Michigan. It is part of Grosse Ile Township, in Wayne County. Its coordinates are 42°05′32″N 83°10′02″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 581 ft (177 m) in 1980.

Naval Air Station Grosse Ile was a Naval air station located on the southern tip of Grosse Ile, Michigan. It operated from 1927 until late 1969, and is now a township airport. During World War II NASGI was one of the largest primary flight training stations for Naval aviators, and RAF pilots. Among the many thousands of Navy pilots who began their careers at NASGI is game show host Bob Barker. Former President George H. W. Bush finished his active Navy career at NASGI attached to Torpedo Squadron 153(VT-153).

Grosse Ile Municipal Airport (ICAO: KONZ, FAA LID: ONZ) is on Grosse Ile, in Wayne County, Michigan. It is owned by the Township of Grosse Ile. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021 categorized it as a local reliever airport facility.Most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, but Grosse Ile Municipal Airport is ONZ to the FAA and has no IATA code.

Elba Island is an island in the Detroit River. It is in Wayne County, in southeast Michigan. Its coordinates are 42°06′09″N 83°08′51″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 591 ft (180 m) in 1980. Numerous types of fish spawn at the island, including northern pike,: 10  goldfish,: 11  carp,: 13  minnow,: 17  channel catfish,: 19  bullhead catfish,: 19  white bass,: 22  and white crappie.: 25 

Celeron Island is an island in the Detroit River. It is in Wayne County, in southeast Michigan, and the southernmost island within Grosse Ile Township. Its coordinates are 42°04′47″N 83°10′24″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 571 ft (174 m) in 1980.Due to erosion, it now comprises two separate islands. Celeron Island is uninhabited and administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, as the island was included into Pointe Mouillee State Game Area in 1976. Celeron Island is undergoing a restoration project with funding from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.Celeron Island was named for Pierre Joseph Céloron de Blainville.

Swan Island is an island in the Detroit River. It is in Wayne County, in southeast Michigan. Its coordinates are 42°05′57″N 83°10′27″W, and the United States Geological Survey gave its elevation as 581 ft (177 m) in 1980. A 1982 report from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said that white bass had been spawning at the island since the 1920s.: 22 

The South Pointe Drive–Frenchman's Creek Bridge is a bridge located on South Pointe Drive over Frenchman's Creek in Grosse Ile, Michigan. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000.

Fox Island is a naturally formed island in the Detroit River, in southeast Michigan, United States. In the late 1800s, it was used by the Dunbar & Sullivan Company to store explosives used for engineering projects in the Detroit River's shipping channels. When this was forbidden by a court injunction following an 1879 explosion, the company constructed Powder House Island several hundred yards to the east and relocated their explosive facilities there. Since then, Fox Island has served as a picnic location and campsite; in the early 20th century, it was the site of a vacation home owned by C. F. Parent. The island is now privately owned, but remains a fishing spot (notably for perch).

Powder House Island (also known as Dynamite Island) is an artificial island on the lower Detroit River in southeast Michigan, directly adjacent to the Canada–United States border. It was constructed in the late 1880s by the Dunbar & Sullivan Company to store explosives during their dredging of the Livingstone Channel. It was constructed in a successful attempt to circumvent an 1880 court order forbidding the company to store explosives on nearby Fox Island. Powder House Island was the location of dynamite storage sheds, as well as a dynamite factory and several ice houses. During this time, it was the site of a series of accidents, including fires in 1895 and 1919 (which both burned the island "to the water's edge"). Twenty short tons (18,000 kg) of the island's dynamite exploded in 1906 after two men "had been shooting with a revolver" near it; while there were no deaths (and only minor injuries to the two men), windows were shattered 3 mi (4.8 km) away and the explosion was clearly audible from 85 mi (137 km) away. After the completion of the Livingstone Channel in 1912, the island continued to be used for storing explosives, including during later projects to deepen the channel in the 1930s. By the 1980s it was completely unused, and by 2015 the island was owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, managed by its Wildlife Division as part of the Pointe Mouillee State Game Area, and accessible to the public for hunting.
