Blakeman Bridge is an arch bridge which crosses the Embarras River in Coles County, Illinois. The concrete bridge is supported by three arches and is 257 feet (78 m) long. The Mercantile Bridge Company built the bridge in 1907. The bridge spanned the river at the site of the first mill and settlement in Coles County. As Illinois Route 130 crosses the river only 200 feet (61 m) upstream, the bridge was used as a detour for that route when its bridge was replaced.The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 30, 1981.

The Five Mile House is a historic brick house five miles [CONVERT] southeast of Charleston, IL, at the intersection of IL 130 and Westfield Rd. Built in the 1840s, the house is one of the oldest remaining structures in Coles County. The house is now operated as a museum and is owned by the Five Mile House Foundation. The name "Five Mile House" alludes to the house's distance from the Coles County Courthouse in Charleston.

WEIU (88.9 FM) is a 4,000 watt effective radiated power radio station in Charleston, Illinois. Owned by Eastern Illinois University, it is a sister station to campus television station WEIU-TV. The two stations share studios on the EIU campus in Charleston. The station licensee, Eastern Illinois University is authorized by the Federal Communications Commission. The station first signed on in 1982.

Mary J. Booth Library, named after University Librarian Mary Josephine Booth, serves the students, faculty and staff of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois.

The Health Education Building, also known as the McAfee Gym, is a historic building located on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. The building was constructed in 1938 and designed by Peoria architecture firm Hewitt, Emerson & Gregg; C. Herrick Hammond served as the state's supervising architect on the project. The building's design incorporates elements of several contemporary architectural styles; it features an Art Deco octagonal clock tower and projecting pilasters, while its flat roof and concrete coursing are representative of the Art Moderne style and its steel ribbon windows are inspired by the International Style. The university used the new building to expand its physical education program into a full course of study, which included the establishment of a women's physical education program. The building was also used to host sporting events, student performances, and school dances. In the 1960s, the construction of Lantz Arena and a new classroom building for health education resulted in the relocation of many of the programs held in the building. The building was officially renamed the Florence McAfee Women's Gymnasium in 1965, after the first head of women's athletics at the university.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on August 9, 1995.

The Old Main, also known as the Livingston C. Lord Administration Building, is the oldest building at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Construction on the building began in 1896 and was completed in 1899. Architect George H. Miller designed the building, which has a medieval style resembling a castle. The building features a central tower, multiple turrets, and a crenellated roof line. It is one of five medieval buildings built at Illinois' public universities under Illinois Governor John Peter Altgeld's administrations; the buildings are collectively known as Altgeld's castles. The Old Main originally housed all of the offices and classrooms for Eastern Illinois, its library, auditorium, and gymnasium. It was the only building on campus until 1909, when Pemberton Hall opened. The building is now used mainly as an administrative building, though it still contains some classrooms.The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places on June 16, 1981.

Established in 1895 as the Eastern Illinois State Normal School, a teacher's college offering a two-year degree, Eastern Illinois University gradually expanded into a comprehensive university with a broad curriculum, including bachelor's and master's degrees in education, business, arts, sciences, and humanities.

Pemberton Hall is a women's residence hall at Eastern Illinois University, in Charleston, Illinois. Located at the north end of the university campus, at the corner of 4th street and Lincoln Avenue, Pemberton Hall is registered as a historic landmark, due to its status as the oldest women's college residence hall in the state.

Lantz Arena is a 5,400-seat multi-purpose arena in Charleston, Illinois. It is home to the Eastern Illinois University (EIU) Panthers men's and women's basketball teams and to the women's volleyball team. Completed in 1967, the Lantz Arena Complex also houses the offices of the EIU athletic department, the Lantz Indoor Fieldhouse, and the Ray Padovan Swimming Pool. The building replaced the Health Education Building (now known as McAfee Gymnasium), which was built in 1938 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. The arena complex is named for Charles Lantz, longtime football, basketball, and baseball coach of the Panthers.

The McFarland House is a historic house located at 895 7th St. in Charleston, Illinois. Architect Charles D. Mitchell designed the Queen Anne house, which was built from 1890 to 1892. The front of the house features a wraparound porch decorated with elliptical bracketing, pendants along the roof line, and partially turned columns. A small second-story porch above the entrance has the same design. A gable at the entrance has a sunburst design; the large gable at the top of the house has a matching sunburst. The attic windows, which are located in the large gable, have a pent roof and are surrounded by decorative woodwork. Queen Anne features inside the house include a stained glass bay window in the parlor, a fireplace decorated with ceramic tiles, decorative spindlework, and wooden door and window surrounds.The house was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 14, 1991.

Charleston is a city in, and the county seat of, Coles County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,286, as of the 2020 census. The city is home to Eastern Illinois University and has close ties with its neighbor, Mattoon. Both are principal cities of the Charleston–Mattoon Micropolitan Statistical Area.
