Comelico Superiore

San Nicolò di Comelico (Ladin: San Nuclò) is a comune (municipality) in the province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about 130 kilometres (81 mi) north of Venice. San Nicolò di Comelico borders the following municipalities: Comelico Superiore, Danta di Cadore, Kartitsch (Austria), Obertilliach (Austria), San Pietro di Cadore, Santo Stefano di Cadore. The 12th-century church at San Nicolò contains frescoes by Italian artist Gianfrancesco da Tolmezzo. Also known as Gianfranco del Zotto, he was born in Socchieve and lived from 1450 to 1510. He is considered to be one of the founders of the Tolmezzo school of painting and was one of the leading exponents of Friulian art in the 15th century (the quattrocento in Italian). Works of his survive at the church of San Nicolò, at the parish church of Provesano in San Giorgio della Richinvelda, and at Castel d'Aviano, Budoia, Pordenone, Cordenons, Vivaro, Forni di Sotto, Forni di Sopra, and his birth town of Socchieve.

Danta di Cadore is a comune (municipality) in the province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about 130 kilometres (81 mi) north of Venice and about 50 kilometres (31 mi) northeast of Belluno.

The Padola is a torrential watercourse in the Province of Belluno that originates north-east of the Monte Croce di Comelico pass in South Tyrolean territory. It first flows in a south-west direction and then, downstream of the aforementioned pass, it points decisively in a south-easterly direction, up to Santo Stefano di Cadore, where it flows into the Piave at an altitude of 900 m a.s.l. The main tributaries are the Risena stream (right tributary 4.88 km long, flows into the Padola upstream of the homonymous village) and Digon (the most important, 11.40 km long, flows from the left at Gera).

The Cima Vallona ambush (Italian: Strage di Cima Vallona) was a double improvised explosive device attack on Italian security forces at Cima Vallona, Provincia di Belluno. The ambush was carried out on 26 June 1967 by members of the South Tyrolean Liberation Committee, a paramilitary organization seeking the independence of German-speaking South Tyrol from Italy. The first explosion, involving the use of a landmine, struck a patrol of Alpini from the Italian Army, called in after the bombing of an electricity pylon. A second patrol, this time composed by Carabinieri, bore the full blast of a booby-trap while searching the area of the previous attack. One Alpini and three Carabinieri were killed, while a fourth Carabiniere survived with serious injuries.

Monte Cavallino (Italian) or Große Kinigat (German) is, after Monte Coglians/Hohe Warte and Peralba/Hochweißstein the third-highest mountain in the Carnic Alps. It has twin summits, the lower one, Königswand (2686), being 250 m to the southeast of the higher summit. Following the main ridge to the west are, after a 2515 m pass, the Kleine Kinigat/Monte Cavallatto (2674 m) and Pfannspitze/Cima Vanscuro (2678 m).The normal route is a 2.5 hour hike from the Obstanser-See-Hütte, crossing over to the Italian site and over the south face. The first recorded ascent was very late for an alpine summit (1898) and was made via the (south)east ridge of the Königswand (UIAA scale II-III). The 500 m high northeast face offers rock climbs up to UIAA scale VI+.The area around Kinigat and nearby Rosskopf, north of Pfannspitze, was placed for sale in 2011. The Austrian government suspended the sale in June after widespread criticism from the general public. The government had hoped to raise up to 121,000 euros from the sale.

Roßkopf or Rosskopf is a peak in the Carnic Alps of Austria, near the boundary with Italy. On June 10, 2011, the Austrian Government offered it and nearby peak Grosse Kinigat for sale for €121,000. The parcel of land is approximately 1,000,000 square metres (250 acres), and the purchaser will not be able to restrict others' right of way on the property.

Lorenzago di Cadore is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) north of Venice and about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Belluno. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 600 and an area of 27.7 square kilometres (10.7 sq mi).Lorenzago di Cadore borders the following municipalities: Domegge di Cadore, Forni di Sopra, Lozzo di Cadore, Vigo di Cadore. For a number of years, Lorenzago hosted the summer vacation of Pope John Paul II. In 2007, Pope Benedict XVI was on vacation there. Giulio Tremonti, twice Italian Finance Minister, was granted honorary citizenship on 29 December 2009; though born in Sondrio, his father was a native from Lorenzago and here the son hosted the drafters of the centre-right proposal of Constitutional amendment.

Lozzo di Cadore is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Belluno in the Italian region of Veneto, located about 120 kilometres (75 mi) north of Venice and about 45 kilometres (28 mi) northeast of Belluno in the Cadore.

The Kreuzbergpass (Italian: Passo Monte Croce di Comelico; German: Kreuzbergpass; Sappada German: Kraizpèrk) (1636 m) is a high mountain pass between the provinces of South Tyrol and Belluno in Italy. It connects the Puster Valley with Cadore. The pass is also the division line between the Dolomites to the west and the Carnic Alps to the northeast.

The Mauria Pass (Italian: Passo della Mauria) (1298 m) is a high mountain pass between the regions of Veneto and Friuli in Italy. It connects Lorenzago di Cadore in Veneto and Forni di sopra in Friuli. The pass road, the SS 52, has a maximum grade of 10%. Normally, the pass is open year-round. At the summit, there is a restaurant. Although this is an important east-west artery, the pass road is quite narrow. Near the pass to the south is the source of the Tagliamento.

The Kartitsch Saddle (German: Kartitscher Sattel) (elevation 1,525 m) is a high mountain pass in Austria between the Dolomites and the Carnic Alps in the Bundesland of Tyrol.
