Kalikata was one of the three villages which were merged to form the city of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta) in India. The other two villages were Gobindapur and Sutanuti. Job Charnock, an administrator with the British East India Company is traditionally credited with the honour of founding the city. He settled in the village of Sutanuti. Kalikata was much less important than Sutanuti and Gobindapur, and this, along with the consequent abundance of space, afforded the British room to settle there. While both Sutanati and Gobindapur appear on old maps like Thomas Bowrey's of 1687 and George Herron's of 1690, Kalikata situated between the two is not depicted. However, one variant of the name, "Kalkatâ", is shown in Abu'l Fazal's Ain-i-Akbari (around 1590).

The Dakshinapan Shopping Centre is on Gariahat Road, right at the foot of Dhakuria Rail Overbridge (Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu Setu) in Dhakuria, Kolkata. It is spread over 57,000 sqft area and has 141 shops. It was launched by the Kolkata Improvement Trust (KIT) in 1988. It is an open-air cultural spot cum shopping complex, the latter consisting mainly of various types of State emporiums from all over India dealing in handlooms, handicrafts, textiles, furniture, fancy goods and imitation jewelry. It also houses Madhusudan Mancha and Children Little Theater. Madhusudan Mancha stages dramas, dances, recitals and other forms of performing arts organized by leading professional artists as well as theatre groups in the city. During 15th Kolkata Film festival in 2009, Madhusudan Mancha hosted 28 films.

Surendranath Law College (Bengali :সুরেন্দ্রনাথ আইন কলেজ) formerly known as Ripon College) is an postgraduate law college affiliated with the University of Calcutta. It was established in Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal in 1885 by a trust formed by the nationalist leader, scholar and educationist Surendranath Banerjee, a year after he founded Surendranath College. This is now regarded one of the oldest Law college of British India.
