Located at 881 metres (2,890 ft) above sea level, with a panoramic view on Lake Como, the town is accessible by paved road from Argegno, winds along the Valle d'Intelvi and by cable railway, which in five minutes exceeds a drop of 540 metres (1,770 ft), allowing access to the village directly from Argegno. The Moltrasio Formation also known as the Lombardische Kieselkalk Formation is a geological formation in Italy and Switzerland. This Formation mostly developed in the Lower or Middle Sinemurian stage of the Lower Jurassic, where on the Lombardian basin tectonic activity modified the current marine and terrestrial habitats. Here it developed a series of marine-related depositional settings, represented by an outcrop of 550–600 m of grey Calcarenites and Calcilutites with chert lenses and marly interbeds, that recovers the Sedrina, Moltrasio and Domaro Formations. This was mostly due to the post-Triassic crisis, that was linked locally to tectonics. The Moltrasio Formation is considered a continuation of the Sedrina Limestone and the Hettangian Albenza Formation, and was probably a shallow water succession, developed on the passive margin of the westernmost Southern Alps. It is known due to the exquisite preservation observed on the Outcrop in Osteno, where several kinds of marine biota have been recovered.

Pellio Intelvi was a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) north of Milan and about 20 kilometres (12 mi) north of Como, on the border with Switzerland. It is divided in two distinct centers, Pellio Inferiore (or Pelsotto) and Pellio Superiore (Pelsopra). It has been a frazione of Alta Valle Intelvi since 2017. It is the birthplace of the Baroque sculptor Ercole Ferrata and of the architects Domenico Corbellini (18th century) and Carlo Lurago.

It is a small comune on Lake Lugano, composed of a series of small frazioni (hamlets): the biggest ones (Claino and Osteno) have been chosen for the municipal name. Claino con Osteno borders the following municipalities: Alta Valle Intelvi, Laino, Ponna, Porlezza, Valsolda. Near Osteno is a site with numerous late-Jurassic fossils characterized by integral fossilization, including the Squaloraja polyspondyla.

Argegno (Comasco: Argegn) is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Como in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 50 kilometres (31 mi) north of Milan and about 15 kilometres (9 mi) north of Como. As of 31 December 2004, it had a population of 650 and an area of 4.3 square kilometres (1.7 sq mi).The village, like many in the Lake Como area is popular with expatriates, particularly from the United Kingdom, a situation exacerbated by the economic flux in recent years. The local economy is heavily dependent upon tourism and the service industry.A cable car can transport people up to the nearby village of Pigra.Argegno is situated on an inlet in the lake, and is built alongside the River Telo which flows into the lake, the discharge of which is heavily dependent upon the season.
