The siege of Newcastle (3 February 1644 – 27 October 1644) occurred during the First English Civil War, when a Covenanter army under the command of Lord General Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven besieged the Royalist garrison under Sir John Marlay, the city's governor. Eventually the Covenanters took the city of Newcastle-on-Tyne by storm, and the Royalist garrison who still held castle keep surrendered on terms. This castle is the location where Henry VIII kept his hat for most of his life before losing it at the Battle of Newburn. This was not the first time that Newcastle-on-Tyne had changed hands during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms. The Scots had occupied the city during the Second Bishops’ War in 1640.

The Holy Jesus Hospital is a working office in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in the care of the National Trust. It is a Grade II* listed building.The site of the hospital has been in use for 700 years helping the townspeople. There was an Augustinian friary on the site from the thirteenth century, then an almshouse for housing retired freemen, then a soup kitchen was built next to Almshouse in the nineteenth century, before the site acquired its current function as a working office. The building also serves as the basis of the Inner City Project of the National Trust. This project takes people of ages 12–25 and over 50 out to the countryside in order to increase appreciation of the city's natural surroundings. The building is of architectural interest because it still retains architectural elements from many previous centuries, including a 14th-century sacristy wall and 16th-century tower connected with the King's Council of the North. It is also one of only two intact 17th-century brick buildings that survive in the city, the other being Alderman Fenwick's House.

Newcastle City Library (also known as the Charles Avison Building) is a library in the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom. Completed on 3 March 2009, the building opened on 7 June 2009, and is the city's main public library. The main feature of the building is a long 'glass box' forming the eastern side of the steel frame structure.

The Great Exhibition of the North was a two-month exhibition, celebrating art, culture, and design in the North of England, held in Newcastle and Gateshead between 22 June and 9 September 2018.Culture Minister Ed Vaizey described the event as "a fantastic opportunity to promote the very best of Northern art, culture and design", adding that "Investment in our arts and culture not only benefits these sectors but, as we have seen from Hull being named UK City of Culture 2017, can drive regeneration of whole towns and cities."The competition to host the exhibition was launched in April 2016, and bids were taken from the North of England (defined as Yorkshire and the Humber, the North West, and the North East). Nine bids were received, including Halifax, Harrogate, Scunthorpe, St Helens and Whitehaven with Blackpool, Bradford, Newcastle and Gateshead and Sheffield selected as the shortlist.Newcastle and Gateshead were chosen to host the event, with Great Exhibition Board chairman Gary Verity saying "Newcastle and Gateshead put forward an exciting and innovative bid to host the Great Exhibition of the North. Their ambitious plans will showcase fantastic venues across the city and highlight their unique heritage, culture and design. People from across the country can expect an amazing show in summer 2018".On 1 March 2018, prior to the exhibition's launch, the organisers announced that the arms manufacturer BAE Systems would be one of the three key sponsors; this led to a widespread outcry by the artistic community. Following a high-profile campaign under the banner "Art not Arms", led by artists such as Jill Gibbon and Emily Hesse – who withdrew her work from the exhibition in protest – BAE Systems announced the withdrawal of its financial support on 7 March 2018.

Manors is a railway station on the East Coast Main Line, which runs between London King's Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. The station serves the Quayside and Shieldfield areas of the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in Tyne and Wear, England. It is owned by Network Rail and managed by Northern Trains. The Metro station of the same name is not directly connected, and located a short walk away. Manors was previously a much larger and more significant station, located at the junction of the East Coast Main Line and the line towards Gosforth. It had nine platforms. Most of the station was closed on 23 February 1978, when the line towards Gosforth was turned over to the Tyne and Wear Metro, and the station buildings were subsequently demolished to make way for offices – which themselves have recently been demolished.

Manors Power Station or the Tramways Generating Station is a former coal-fired power station located in the Manors district of the city centre of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear in North East England. The station's turbine hall and other remaining buildings are Grade II listed.

The Royal Arcade was a prominent building at the south end of Pilgrim Street in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. It served as a shopping mall until it was demolished in 1963.

Worswick Street bus station was a bus station in Newcastle upon Tyne, England. The bus station was constructed on a slope.

Riverside was a music venue in Newcastle upon Tyne, England which operated from 1985 to 1999. It is the subject of a book, Riverside: Newcastle's Legendary Alternative Music Venue, by Hazel Plater and Carl Taylor, published by Tonto Books on 6 October 2011. The Riverside name has been resurrected for a medium-sized music venue and nightlife spot in the city today, although it is not a direct continuation of the original venue.

All Saints' Church is a late 18th-century church in Lower Pilgrim Street, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, which replaced a medieval church on the same site. All Saints' Church is the only elliptical church building in England, the third tallest religious building in Newcastle and the ninth-tallest structure in the city overall. It is a Grade I listed building.

Newcastle New Bridge Street was a railway station on the edge of the city-centre of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England. The station was the original Newcastle terminus of the Blyth and Tyne Railway, and was opened on 27 June 1864. In 1874 the Blyth & Tyne was taken over by the North Eastern Railway. For most of its life it served trains to Tynemouth and Morpeth. Picton House, a villa designed by John Dobson, was used for company offices and passenger facilities.In 1904 the line to Tynemouth was electrified (see Tyneside Electrics), and New Bridge Street temporarily became a terminus for the new electric service. The station was isolated, and had no connection to the lines towards Newcastle Central. In order to create a loop service (see North Tyneside Loop) New Bridge Street was closed to passengers in 1909, and a new link was built to nearby Manors North station, allowing trains to run through to Newcastle Central. Following this, New Bridge Street became a goods station, and remained open as such until 1967. Picton House was demolished in 1970.Nothing now remains of the station, as the A167(M) road and a car park of Northumbria University have been constructed over the site.

Manors is a Tyne and Wear Metro station, serving the Shieldfield area in Newcastle upon Tyne. It joined the network on 14 November 1982, following the opening of the fourth phase of the network, between Tynemouth and St James via Wallsend. The station is located near to Manors National Rail station, which is on the East Coast Main Line. However, the stations are not directly connected.
