Vanemuine Concert Hall

Vanemuine (lit. 'Eldermost') is a theatre in Tartu, Estonia. It is the first Estonian language theatre. Stemming from the Vanemuine Society (1865), the theatre's first performance was Lydia Koidula's Saaremaa Onupoeg ("The cousin from Saaremaa") at the society's fifth anniversary. In subsequent years, Vanemuine has expanded to include a symphony orchestra and ballet company, while its repertoire has included a range of operettas and music theatre through operas and dramas. Under Karl Menning, the theatre served a vocational purpose, with a great emphasis on educating future talent. Subsequent directors prioritized entertainment value, while Kaarel Ird—who led Vanemuine for more than forty years—oversaw a blend of genres as well as tours of the Soviet Union. In recent years, content has varied extensively. Vanemuine has occupied a series of venues. The original Vanemuine Society House on Jaama Street operated for 33 years before being destroyed by fire in 1903. In 1906, it was replaced by a new hall designed by the Finnish architect Armas Lindgren at its current location. This venue was expanded in the 1930s to address technical issues, but destroyed by a bomb during World War II. Vanemuine returned in the former Tartu German theatre in 1944; rebuilt after a 1983 fire, this theatre is today nicknamed the "little house". A 682-seat hall (the "big house") was completed in 1967, with the 842-seat Vanemuine Concert Hall following in 1970.

Barclay de Tolly Monument (Estonian: Barclay de Tolly monument) is a monument in Tartu, Estonia. The monument is erected in the honor of Baltic-German field marshal Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly. The monument is listed as cultural heritage monument of Estonia.The monument is designed by I. Demut–Malinovski and A. Stsedrin. The monument opened in 1849.

Barclay Square (Estonian: Barclay plats) is a public square and park in the city of Tartu, Estonia, adjacent to the Ülikooli street. It is named after Russian Imperial officer Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly and there is a large monument in the park honoring him.

Kesklinn (Estonian for "City centre") is a neighbourhood of Tartu, Estonia. It has a population of 6,517 (as of 31 December 2013) and an area of 1.80 km2 (0.69 sq mi).

Tartu University Library (Estonian: Tartu Ülikooli raamatukogu) is an academic library in Tartu, Estonia, belonging to the University of Tartu. It is the largest academic library in the country. The library was founded in 1802 (with its forerunner from 1632). Holdings include approximately 3.7 million volumes. The collection is particularly rich in the field of semiotics. The main building of the library is situated in the center of Tartu, on Struve Street 1. Its holdings include memorial collections of Karl Ernst von Baer, Thomas Sebeok and many others. From 1985 to 1988 Marju Lepajõe was Senior Librarian, Department of Manuscripts and Rare Books there.

The Ülikooli Street (Estonian: Ülikooli tänav, University Street) is a street in the center of Tartu in Estonia. Named after the University of Tartu whose main building is located on this street (18 Ülikooli str.), it runs through the business district, passes behind the Town Hall building, and hosts a number of University-related facilities, including the university cafe (20 Ülikooli str.), Von Bock House, the university book shop (11 Ülikooli str.) and the old Faculty of Chemistry building, which is also called the Marx Building (16 Ülikooli str.). The Barclay Square, location of the Barclay de Tolli bust, and the Pirogov Square, location of the Nikolay Ivanovich Pirogov statue, are adjacent to the street. The street has also been named as "Silicon Alley" because of the high concentration of information technology companies.

Tartu Art House (Estonian: Tartu Kunstimaja) is a building and art gallery in Tartu, Estonia. The house is managed by Tartu Artists' Union. Every year about 30 exhibitions take place.As of about 2020, the house has three galleries: Big Gallery (172 m2), Small Gallery (57 m2) and Monumental Gallery (57 m2).The building was erected in 1959.

The Estonian Military Academy (Estonian: Kaitseväe Akadeemia) is an institution of applied higher education for national defence in Tartu, Estonia. The institutions mission is to train and educate regular officers for the Estonian Defence Forces and Estonian Defence League, as well as for other military institutions. It has established a national reputation for expertise in military research and development.The academic program of EMA provides a balanced education in military and civilian subjects. The academic staff members of the EMA are supported by members of the academic community from universities throughout Estonia.

The Dorpat Voivodeship (Polish: Województwo dorpackie or województwo derpskie) was a unit of administrative division and local government in the Duchy of Livonia, part of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth, from 1598 until the Swedish conquest of Livonia in the 1620s. The seat of the voivode was in the town of Dorpat (Tartu), while the regional assembly (sejmik) for the whole province of Livonia was located in Wenden. The area of the Dorpat Voivodeship was app. 9,000 square kilometers, and it had two senators in the Senate of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The voivodeship was created by King Zygmunt III Waza in 1598, out of the Dorpat Presidency, which had existed since the Truce of Jam Zapolski (1582). It was divided into five districts: district (starostwo) of Dorpat (Tartu) district (starostwo) of Oberpahlen (Põltsamaa) district (starostwo) of Lais (Laiuse) district (starostwo) of Kirrumpah (Kirumpää) district (starostwo) of Neuhausen (Vastseliina)It effectively ceased to exist in 1621, when northern Livonia was conquered by the Swedish Empire, and turned into Swedish Livonia (see also Polish–Swedish War (1600–1629)). Officially, the Dorpat Voivodeship was liquidated in 1660, following the Treaty of Oliva. Nevertheless, the title of Voivode of Dorpat was kept until the Partitions of Poland, as the so-called "fictitious title" (Polish: urzad fikcyjny).

The Baltic Defence College (BALTDEFCOL) is a multinational military college, established by the three Baltic states (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania) in 1999. It serves as a centre of strategic and operational research and provides professional military education to intermediate- and senior-level officers and government officials from the founding states, other member states of the European Union (EU) and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) countries, as well as other European countries including Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia and Ukraine.

The siege of Tartu took place in 1224 and resulted in the fall of the last major center of Estonian resistance in the mainland provinces to the Christian conquest of Estonia.

Kissing Students (Estonian: Suudlevad tudengid) is sculpture and fountain in Raekoja plats, Tartu, Estonia. The structure locates in front of Town Hall Square. The structure is one of the most recognised symbols of Tartu.The fountain was built in 1948 and it was used especially by newlyweds who sought to find luck for future when standing there.The sculpture was created in 1998 by Mati Karmin.
