Alfarnate

Alfarnatejo is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 50 km from the city of Málaga. It has a population of approximately 400 residents. The natives are called Tejones and the town's neighbors in Alfarnate are Palancos. It is located near the Sierra del Jobo in the northwest and the Sierra de Alhama in the east in the mountainous region of Axarquía.

Riogordo is a small town and municipality of around 3,000 inhabitants in Málaga province in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is situated in the centre of the comarca of Axarquía that runs east and inland of Málaga as far as Nerja. It is located 40 kilometers from Málaga and 30 km from Vélez-Málaga. Nestled in the low-lying mountains (between the Montes de Málaga and the higher sierras), it is almost one of the classic Andalusian "white villages". It is equidistant between Málaga and Vélez-Málaga, both of which are little more than 30 minutes by car. The town hosts the "El Paso" festival at Easter (Semana Santa), a reenactment of the crucifixion which has a cast of hundreds, mostly local villagers.

Periana is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It belongs to the comarca of La Axarquía. The municipality is situated approximately 23 kilometres from Vélez and 48 from the provincial capital of Málaga near the Sierra de Alhama. It has a population of approximately 3,500 residents. The natives are called Perianenses and their nickname is Los Manga Anchas or “The Wide-sleeved Ones”. During the Andalusian earthquake of 25 December 1884, 57% of houses collapsed completely and the rest suffered very serious damage. In total there were 44 dead and 32 seriously injured. In the annexes of La Muela, Guaro, Vilo, Mondrón, Sara, Marines, Rosas, Malpelo, Carrasquilla and Rioseco there were 190 collapsed houses and 171 badly damaged. There were 14 dead and 81 injured.

Villanueva del Trabuco is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is situated in the northeast of the province. Villanueva del Trabuco is located in the comarca of Nororma. The municipality is situated approximately 45 kilometres from the provincial capital of Málaga and 34 from Antequera. It has a population of approximately 5,000 residents. The natives are called Trabuqueños. Local legend has it that the town is named after a type of early gun called a Trabuco, which was in common usage in the area many years ago.

Villanueva del Rosario is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga in the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is located off the motorway from Málaga to Granada and Seville. It is situated in the northeast of the province. It belongs to the comarca of Nororma. The white washed pueblo sits at the base of the Cerro de la Cruz, with rolling countryside on the other three sides. Famous for the quality of its olive oil, the countryside is naturally populated with olive trees and wheat fields in between. The population is approximately 3,500. The feria is celebrated during the first week in August, and is known as "La Veladilla del Carmen". There is another feria in October to celebrate the patron called the "La Virgen del Rosario". Festivities however start earlier in the year on April 25 when the population, in common with other agricultural communities celebrate "La Romeria de San Marcos" who is the patron saint of the countryside. The pueblo acts as a base for potholers who can explore the caverns in the Sierra, or for cycling, horse riding or walking holidays. Several properties are available for 'rural tourism'.

Colmenar is a municipality in the province of Málaga, in Andalusia, southern Spain. Colmenar has been populated since the Neolithic age, as testified by the remains found at the Cueva de las Pulseras. After the Reconquest, the town was named after a nearby farm known as Colmenar (Spanish: "apiary") for its great number of beehives. The history of the village began in 1487, but it is not before 1777 that it became independent as a township. Colmenar houses the region's medical center.

Comares is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 28 kilometers from the provincial capital and 24 from Vélez-Málaga. It is located in the foothills of the Montes de Málaga 703 meters above sea level. Comares is one of the 31 villages that make up the comarca of Axarquía. It is bordered to the north with Riogordo, to the north, northeast and east with Cútar, to the south with El Borge, to the southwest and west with Málaga and to the northwest with Colmenar. It has a population of approximately 1,420 residents. The natives are called Moriscosos.

Cuevas de San Marcos is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated in the northern part of the Antequera region, on the border of the province of Córdoba from the river valley of Genil to the Sierra Malnombre and Camorro de Cuevas Altas. It is also located within the comarca of Nororma. It borders the provinces of Granada and Cordoba to the north, the comarcas of La Axarquía to the south and Antequera to the west. The town is situated at an altitude of 420 meters above sea level. By road Cuevas de San Marcos is located 88 kilometers from Málaga and 487 km from Madrid. It is a farming village, with a predominance of olive growing and oil production of the "Hojiblanca" variety. Its name comes from its patron saint, Mark the Evangelist, and its famous Cave of Belda. Cuevas de San Marcos has a population of approximately 4,000 residents. It covers an area of about 37.50 km2. The natives are called Cuevachos.

Archidona is a town and municipality in the province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It is the center of the comarca of Nororiental de Málaga and the head of the judicial district that bears its name. It earned the title of city in 1901. It covers an area of 187 km2 extending from the east side of the Hoya of Antequera. The city is located at a height of 666 meters in the foothills of the Sierra de Gracia. With 8,858 inhabitants, Archidona is the most populous municipality in the comarca. The population is concentrated in the main urban centers of the same name and in Salinas, Estación de Archidona and Huertas del Río. The municipality is situated approximately 50 kilometers from the city of Málaga and 20 km from Antequera. Archaeological finds confirm the presence of settlers in the area from the Lower Paleolithic. The oldest permanent settlement correspond to Escua, founded by the Phoenicians, and Ulisis, inhabited by Turduli and Romans. During the Muslim period, Medina Arxiduna achieved notoriety by becoming the capital of Rayya Cora. In his alcazaba he was proclaimed Emir Abd al-Rahman I in 756, leading to the establishment of the Emirate of Cordoba in al-Andalus. After the Christian conquest in 1462, the town remained under the seigniorial jurisdiction of the House of Osuna. The city was declared a Historic-Artistic Site in 1980 for Baroque urban and architectural heritage. The municipality is home to several archaeological sites from different periods and areas of ecological interest such as the Natural Lagoons Reserve of Archidona and Hoz de Marín. It is also the headquarters of the Andalusian and Mediterranean Cinema Displays. The natives are called Archidoneses.

Montes de Málaga Natural Park (Spanish: Parque Natural Montes de Málaga) is the name of a natural park in Andalusia, Spain. It is named after the Montes de Málaga range located near Málaga city and was established in 1989.

The archaeological site Peñas de Cabrera, containing numerous rock shelters, is located in the municipality of Casabermeja (Spain). The entire surrounding area of Las Peñas de Cabrera, rife with natural minerals, rocks and fossils, is named after one of its districts of the same name. The entire complex of mountains and valleys consists of many shelters revealing rock art of paintings and engravings. In the early 1970s the University of Málaga began research in Peñas de Cabrera, focusing particularly on its rock and cave paintings. Thereafter the area became well known to the scientific community, as the University had laid the groundwork for all subsequent exploration. The shelters and caves were later studied by eminent researchers who carried out archaeological surveys, tracings,[1] and topographical mappings and drew up an inventory of rock and cave paintings. One hundred and thirty five cave paintings spread out over twenty shelters were discovered. As of 2016 thirty-two rock shelters featuring paintings, engravings and archaeological material, mainly ceramic and flint (Silex), have been recorded. Alongside these are also a number of shelters being studied that show scientific potential, but which are pending investigation depending upon the results of further archaeological surveys.

Benamocarra is a town and municipality in the Province of Málaga, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The municipality is situated approximately 5 kilometres from Vélez-Málaga and 41 from Málaga, the provincial capital. It has a population of approximately 3,000 residents. The natives are called Benamocarreños. Its mayor since 2003 (reelected in 2007) is Abdeslam Jesús Aoulad Ben Salem Lucena of the Partido Andalucista. He was the first and still is the only, Spanish mayor of Moroccan origin. He is a member of the National Executive of the P.A., and was candidate for this party at the 2008 autonomous elections.
