Howland is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The Howland Chapel School is a historic school building for African-American students located near Heathsville, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built in 1867, and is a one-story, gable fronted frame building measuring approximately 26 feet by 40 feet. It features board-and-batten siding and distinctive bargeboards with dentil soffits. The interior has a single room divided by a later central partition formed by sliding, removable doors. The building is a rare, little-altered Reconstruction-era schoolhouse built to serve the children of former slaves. Its construction was funded by New York educator, reformer and philanthropist Emily Howland (1827-1929), for whom the building is named. It was used as a schoolhouse until 1958, and serves as a museum, community center and adult-education facility. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1991.

Miskimon is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, in the U.S. state of Virginia. Miskimon is on the county line with half of Miskimon in Northumberland, and the other half in Lancaster County. Miskimon was known as Forrester's Shop in the 1800s due to the Forrester family having a large woodworking shop there. In the early 1900s, small post offices were being established at country stores. The Reverend Robert Miskimon, the pastor of Smyrna Methodist Church was influential in obtaining the rights for a post office in the village. The name of the village was changed to Miskimon. The 1st major business there was Beane's Mill, it may date to the 1600s, but it now lays in ruins. Beane's store was the only business in operation for many years and closed down in the 1970s. Miskimon had two churches: Smyrna Methodist and Providence Baptist. Providence Baptist is still in operation. The old family names in Miskimon are Dawson, Beane, Sampson, Marsh, Forrester and Cockrell.

Claraville is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.

Sunnyside is a historic plantation house located at Heathsville, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was built about 1822, and is a two-story, single-pile, central-passage-plan Federal style brick I-house. It is topped by a gabled standing seam metal roof and has a two-story kitchen addition and a two-story rear addition. The front facade features a one-story, flat-roofed portico featuring paired Doric order columns. Also on the property are the contributing former smokehouse, dairy, guest house (formerly a kitchen), carriage house, corn crib, and barn. It is located in the Heathsville Historic District. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.

Kirkland Grove Campground is a historic Baptist campground located near Heathsville, Northumberland County, Virginia. It was established in 1892, and was the site of week-long religious services. The main building is the great Tabernacle, built in 1892. It measures 90 feet square and supported by timber columns supporting a standing seam metal hipped roof. The roof has four square tiers rising from the center, each tier growing smaller toward the top. The two other contributing buildings are the Camper's Tent and Preacher's Tent, both built in 1892. The property continues to be used for church meetings, revivals, reunions, and youth camp activities. Listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in late 1991, it was subsequently included in the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Browns Store is an unincorporated community in Northumberland County, in the U.S. state of Virginia.

Now known as Rice's Hotel / Hughlett's Tavern, this "courthouse tavern" was built in stages between the late 1700s and the mid-19th century. Throughout the years, this historic Northern Neck landmark has served as in inn, a tavern, a hotel, apartments, and business offices. The structure is located at Heathsville, Northumberland County, Virginia. It is a two-story, frame building with a 12-bay front and two-tier wooden piazza and Federal style interior. It is perhaps the largest traditional tavern in any Virginia town east of Fredericksburg and north of Gloucester Court House. The building closed in the late 1970s, and was subsequently donated to the Northumberland County Historical Society. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. It is located in the Heathsville Historic District at 73 Monument Place, located behind the old Northumberland Courthouse. Today, Rice's Hotel / Hughlett's Tavern is operated by an all-volunteer foundation, Rice's Hotel / Hughlett's Tavern Foundation Inc., and has become a major tourist attraction. It is home to four artisan guilds: the Blacksmith Guild, the Quilt Guild, the Woodworkers Guild, and the Spinners & Weavers Guild. The Tavern houses the "Heritage Arts Center Gift Shoppe, which sells the guilds' output, plus wares made by over 70 other local artists and artisans. A portion of the building also includes the Tavern Café, which is entirely run by the volunteers of the Tavern's new Culinary Guild. The gift shoppe and café are open Thursday thru Saturday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Tavern Foundation also offers heritage arts classes in such traditional skills as blacksmithing, weaving, spinning, quilting, woodworking, and basket-making. Rice's Hotel / Hughlett's Tavern sponsors the Heathsville Farmers Market on the third Saturday, April thru October, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Heathsville is a census-designated place (CDP) in and the county seat of Northumberland County, Virginia, United States. Heathsville is in the easternmost county of the Northern Neck of Virginia, which was the birthplace of three of the first five Presidents of the United States - George Washington, James Madison, and James Monroe. It is the county seat of Northumberland County, and has housed four county courthouses since the first was built in 1663. It is also home to numerous historical home sites, some dating to the late 18th century. The Heathsville Historic District, Coan Baptist Church, Howland Chapel School, Kirkland Grove Campground, Rice's Hotel, Oakley, St. Stephen's Church, Sunnyside, and The Academy are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Heathsville is named after lawyer and politician John Heath. The population as of the 2020 Census was 136. It is located on U.S. Route 360 (the Northumberland Highway) west of Reedville and east of Warsaw.
