Catterline

Crawton is a former fishing community on the southeast Aberdeenshire coast in Scotland, deserted since 1927. Approximately three miles (5 km) south of Stonehaven, Crawton Farm (grid reference NO879798) lies to the north of Catterline above a shingle beach. The ruins of 23 houses and a school are all that survive of the coastal hamlet on the clifftop. In its heyday, 30 Crawton men fished 12 boats and the village had its own fish merchant. Following nearly 50 years of decline due to overfishing, Crawton was finally deserted by its last inhabitant in 1927. Crawton is adjacent to the nature reserve of Fowlsheugh, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the United Kingdom. Noted architectural or historic features in the general area include Dunnottar Castle, Fiddes Castle, Fetteresso Castle, Chapel of St. Mary and St. Nathalan and Muchalls Castle. Crawton is known for its geological diversity and is a popular site for both university and school field trips. It is a tradition to perform a mini-bus quiz on the journey to Crawton, started by the geologist Ian Rae.

Fowlsheugh is a coastal nature reserve in Kincardineshire, northeast Scotland, known for its 70-metre-high (230 ft) cliff formations and habitat supporting prolific seabird nesting colonies. Designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by Scottish Natural Heritage, the property is owned by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. Fowlsheugh can be accessed by a public clifftop trail, or by boats which usually emanate from the nearby harbour at the town of Stonehaven. Tens of thousands of pelagic birds return to the site every spring to breed, after wintering at sea or in more southern climates, principal species being puffins, razorbills, kittiwakes, fulmars and guillemots. Due to global warming, the planktonic species previously present that prefer cold water are not available in the quantity required to support the historically large sandeel population. Added to the problem has been overfishing of the Scottish sandeel, further reducing the numbers of this dietary staple for puffins and other local seabirds.

Craiglethy (Scottish Gaelic: Creag Liathach - meaning grey rock) is a small island/skerry off Fowlsheugh on the east coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland in the North Sea. As it is part of Fowlsheugh, it is an SSSI, with many seabirds and seals living on it. It is also one of the few islands on the east coast of Scotland, along with Mugdrum Island and Inchcape, apart from the Islands of the Forth.

Kinneff is a roadside hamlet in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, just north of Inverbervie. To the north lies another hamlet, Catterline. Kinneff also has a primary school.

Thornyhive Bay is an embayment along the North Sea coast in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This bay is situated approximately 2.5 miles south of the town of Stonehaven and approximately 2.5 miles north of the Fowlsheugh Nature Reserve. The steep cliffs afford sightings of certain seabirds.

Dunnottar Castle (Scottish Gaelic: Dùn Fhoithear, "fort on the shelving slope") is a ruined medieval fortress located upon a rocky headland on the northeast coast of Scotland, about 2 miles (3 kilometres) south of Stonehaven in Aberdeenshire. The surviving buildings are largely of the 15th and 16th centuries, but the site is believed to have been fortified in the Early Middle Ages. Dunnottar has played a prominent role in the history of Scotland through to the 18th-century Jacobite risings because of its strategic location and defensive strength. Dunnottar is best known as the place where the Honours of Scotland, the Scottish crown jewels, were hidden from Oliver Cromwell's invading army in the 17th century. The property of the Keiths from the 14th century, and the seat of the Earl Marischal, Dunnottar declined after the last Earl forfeited his titles by taking part in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. The castle was restored in the 20th century and is now open to the public. The ruins of the castle are spread over 1.4 hectares (3+1⁄2 acres), surrounded by steep cliffs that drop to the North Sea, 160 feet (50 metres) below. A narrow strip of land joins the headland to the mainland, along which a steep path leads up to the gatehouse. The various buildings within the castle include the 14th-century tower house as well as the 16th-century palace. Dunnottar Castle is a scheduled monument, and twelve structures on the site were listed buildings.

Bowdun Head is a headland landform on the North Sea coast approximately one kilometre south of Stonehaven, Scotland.(Ordnance Survey, 2004) Slightly to the north is another headland, Downie Point. Somewhat to the south along the coast is Dunnottar Castle on the far side of the bay of Castle Haven. Other historic structures in the general vicinity include the Stonehaven Tolbooth, Fetteresso Castle, the Chapel of St. Mary and St. Nathalan and Muchalls Castle. There is considerable prehistory associated with the local area including a Pictish hill fort on the sea stack of Dunnicaer immediately to the north, and Bronze Age archaeological sites at Fetteresso (Hogan, 2008) and Spurryhillock, both somewhat inland of Bowdun Head.

Stonehaven War Memorial is a war memorial situated on Black Hill overlooking Stonehaven in Scotland.

Dunnicaer, or Dun-na-caer, is a precipitous sea stack just off the coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland, between Dunnottar Castle and Stonehaven. Despite the unusual difficulty of access, in 1832 Pictish symbol stones were found on the summit and 21st-century archaeology has discovered evidence of a Pictish hill fort which may have incorporated the stones in its structure. The stones may have been incised in the third or fourth centuries AD but this goes against the general archaeological view that the simplest and earliest (Class I) symbol stones date from the fifth or even seventh century AD.

Dunnottar Parish Church is a parish church of the Church of Scotland, serving Stonehaven in the south of Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is within the Church of Scotland's Presbytery of Kincardine and Deeside. During 2020, the congregation united to the South Parish Church in Stonehaven to form Carronside Church of Scotland. On 3 June 2021, the Rev. Sarah Smith was inducted into the charge.

Strathlethan Bay is on the North Sea coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland just south of Stonehaven. To the north is Downie Point near which lies Stonehaven's Black Hill war memorial – the popular walk from Stonehaven to Dunnottar Castle runs along this part of the trail. On the other side of the bay is Dunnicaer, an inaccessible sea stack just offshore of Bowdun Head. The long-distance Aberdeenshire Coastal Trail runs around the bay at the top of steep cliffs. On 19 November 1916 the wreckage of the Norwegian steamer Isa Fiord (meaning ice fiord) was washed ashore in the bay and on 8 October 1940 the Danish ship Bellona II came aground after it had suffered bombing damage off Gourdon.
