Tartu County (Estonian: Tartu maakond or Tartumaa) is one of 15 counties of Estonia. It is located in eastern Estonia bordering Põlva County, Valga County, Viljandi County and Jõgeva County. The area of Tartu County is 2,992.74 km2 (1,155.50 sq mi), which covers 6.9% of the territory of Estonia. In 2022 Tartu County had a population of 157,758 – constituting 11.9% of the total population in Estonia. The city of Tartu is the centre of the county located at a distance of 186 km (116 mi) from Tallinn. Tartu County is divided into 8 local governments – 1 urban and 7 rural municipalities.

The Tartu offensive operation (Russian: Тартуская наступательная операция), also known as the Battle of Tartu (Estonian: Tartu lahing) and the Battle of Emajõgi (Estonian: Emajõe lahingud, German: Schlacht am Embach) was a campaign fought over southeastern Estonia in 1944. It took place on the Eastern Front during World War II between the Soviet 3rd Baltic Front and parts of the German Army Group North. The Soviet tactical aim was to defeat the 18th Army and to capture the city of Tartu. The strategic goal was a quick occupation of Estonia. The Soviet command planned to reach the coast of the Gulf of Riga and trap the Army Detachment "Narwa". The German side involved Estonian conscripts, which fought to defend their country against the looming Soviet annexation. The 3rd Baltic Front captured Tartu. The conquest caused the destruction of the Estonian National Museum and 40 million roubles worth of damage to the University of Tartu. Kampfgruppe "Wagner" stabilised the front at the Emajõgi River. The XXVIII Army Corps supported by Omakaitse militia stalled the front at the Väike Emajõgi and Gauja Rivers, preventing the 3rd Baltic Front from cutting off the "Narwa".

Vaksali (Estonian for "Station") is a neighbourhood of Tartu, Estonia. It is one of the smallest districts of Tartu, it has a population of 3,105 (as of 31 December 2013) and an area of 0.76 km2 (0.29 sq mi).

University of Tartu Natural History Museum (Estonian: Tartu Ülikooli Loodusmuuseum) is a natural history museum in Tartu, Estonia. The museum is affiliated with Tartu University. The museum was established in 1802.The museum has zoological, geological, botanical and mycological collections. The permanent exhibition of the museum is titled as "Earth. Life. Story."

The Estonian Folklore Archives (EFA) is the central folklore archives in Estonia. The Archives functions currently as the subdivision of the Estonian Literary Museum but it was established in 1927 as the division of the Estonian National Museum. The current Head of the Archives is Dr. Risto Järv.

The Estonian Literary Museum (ELM; Estonian: Eesti Kirjandusmuuseum), is a national research institute of the Ministry of Education and Research of the Republic of Estonia. Its mission is to improve the cultural heritage of Estonia, to collect, preserve, research and publish the results. The current Head of the Estonian Literary Museum is Tõnis Lukas.

On July 9, 1941, 193 detainees were shot in Tartu prison and the Gray House courtyard by the Soviet NKVD; their bodies were dumped in makeshift graves and in the prison well.

Korporatsioon Ugala (the Ugala Fraternity), also known as Korp! Ugala, is a fraternal organization of Estonian higher education students. It was established at the University of Tartu on 10 November 1913 (28 November 1913 Julian calendar). The Ugala flag colors are black, blue, and white (standing for fatherland, friendship, and honesty).The Ugala corporation house was planned by its member Arnold Matteus, who was also a Tartu architect. It was completed in 1939. During the Soviet annexation of Estonia, Ugala was banned for nearly 50 years. However, the Ugala members gathered in a number of exile branches of the fraternity, most notably in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Sweden. Ugala was officially reinstated at Tartu University on 28 October 1988.

Tartu railway station (Estonian: Tartu raudteejaam) is the main railway station in Tartu, Estonia. Tartu railway station is situated west of the centre Tartu. It was established in 1876 when Tapa–Tartu route was built. The station building was opened in 1877. Passenger trains are operated by Elron and most services are towards Tallinn. There are also services to Valga and to Jõgeva, Orava, Koidula and Piusa.There are two platforms with the length of 260m and 330m.
