Vierville-sur-Mer (French pronunciation: [vjɛʁvil syʁ mɛʁ] , literally Vierville on Sea) is a commune in the Calvados department in Normandy region in northwestern France.

Asnières-en-Bessin (French pronunciation: [ɑnjɛʁ ɑ̃ bɛsɛ̃] ; literally "Asnières in Bessin") is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region of north-western France.

SS Pennsylvanian was a cargo ship built in 1913 for the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company. During World War I she was requisitioned by the United States Navy and commissioned as USS Pennsylvanian (ID-3511) in September 1918, and renamed two months later to USS Scranton. After her naval service, her original name of Pennsylvanian was restored. Pennsylvanian was built by the Maryland Steel Company as one of eight sister ships for the American-Hawaiian Steamship Company, and was employed in inter-coastal service via the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and the Panama Canal after it opened. Pennsylvanian was one of the first two steamships to travel eastbound through the canal when it opened in August 1914. During World War I, as both SS Pennsylvanian and USS Scranton, the ship carried cargo and animals to France, and returned American troops after the Armistice in 1918. After her naval service ended in 1919, she was returned to her original owners and resumed relatively uneventful cargo service over the next twenty years. Early in World War II, the ship was requisitioned by the War Shipping Administration, and shipped cargo on New York – Caribbean routes and transatlantic routes. In mid-July 1944, Pennsylvanian was scuttled as part of the breakwater for one of the Mulberry artificial harbors built to support the Normandy Invasion.

Formigny (French pronunciation: [fɔʁmiɲi] ) is a former commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. On 1 January 2017, it was merged into the new commune Formigny La Bataille.

Formigny La Bataille (French pronunciation: [fɔʁmiɲi la bataj]) is a commune in the department of Calvados, northwestern France. The municipality was established on 1 January 2017 by merger of the former communes of Formigny (the seat), Aignerville, Écrammeville and Louvières.

The Battle of Formigny, fought on 15 April 1450, was a major battle of the Hundred Years' War between England and France. A decisive French victory that destroyed the last significant English field army in Normandy, it paved the way for the capture of their remaining strongholds.Although its impact on the result is debatable, Formigny is thought to be the first major engagement where artillery was present on the battlefield, having been previously confined to siege warfare.

Saint-Pierre-du-Mont Airfield is an abandoned World War II military airfield which is located in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northern France. It was one of the many instrumental airfields used to defeat Adolf Hitler's Axis powers in World War II. Located just north of Saint-Pierre-du-Mont along the English Channel coast, it was a United States Army Air Force temporary airfield established shortly after the D-Day landings in France. The airfield was one of the first established in the liberated area of Normandy, being constructed by the IX Engineering Command, 834th Engineer Aviation Battalion.

Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (French pronunciation: [sɛ̃ loʁɑ̃ syʁ mɛʁ] , literally Saint-Laurent on Sea) is a commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region in northwestern France. The town is located not far from Omaha Beach, where, in World War II, Allied forces landed during D-Day. It was also the location of a British Commando raid - Operation Curlew during January 1942.

Aignerville (French pronunciation: [ɛɲɛʁvil] ) is a former commune in the Calvados department in the Normandy region of northwestern France. On 1 January 2017, it was merged into the new commune Formigny La Bataille.
