Mount Desert Island (MDI; French: Île des Monts Déserts) in Hancock County, Maine, is the largest island off the coast of Maine. With an area of 108 square miles (280 km2) it is the 52nd-largest island in the United States, the sixth-largest island in the contiguous United States, and the second-largest island on the Eastern Seaboard, behind Long Island and ahead of Martha's Vineyard. According to the 2010 census, the island has a year-round population of 10,615. In 2017, an estimated 3.5 million tourists visited Acadia National Park on MDI. The island is home to numerous well-known summer colonies such as Northeast Harbor and Bar Harbor.

Mount Desert is a town on Mount Desert Island in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The population was 2,146 at the 2020 census. Incorporated in 1789, the town currently encompasses the villages of Otter Creek, Seal Harbor, Northeast Harbor, Somesville, Hall Quarry, and Pretty Marsh.

Eagle Lake Road Bridge (commonly known as the Eagle Lake Bridge) is an historic stone-faced reinforced-concrete filled arch bridge in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine. Built in 1927 as part of the Rockefeller carriage road system, the bridge carries State Route 233 (SR 233, Eagle Lake Road) over a carriage road connector linking the Eagle Lake and Witch Hole Pond loops. The bridge is noted for its Gothic (pointed) arch and for a 1974–1975 widening project that preserved its historic appearance while adapting it for modern traffic.

Somes Sound is a fjard, a body of water running deep into Mount Desert Island, the main site of Acadia National Park in Maine, United States. Its deepest point is approximately 175 feet (50 m), and it is over 100 feet (30 m) deep in several places. The sound almost splits the island in two. While often described as the "only fjord on the East Coast", it lacks the extreme vertical relief and anoxic sediments associated with Norwegian fjords, and is now called a fjard by officials — a smaller drowned glacial embayment. Somes Sound was named for Abraham Somes, who was one of the first settlers on the island and had a home at the end of the sound in Somesville, the first village on the island.

The Bubbles are pair of rounded roche moutonnées on Mount Desert Island, within Acadia National Park, in Maine, United States. Consisting of the North Bubble and South Bubble, they are one of the most popular photographic subjects in the park, with common viewpoints behind the lawn at Jordan Pond House or the adjacent Jordan Pond. The two mountains are separated by a narrow saddle valley. Bubble Rock, a massive glacial erratic carried 19 miles (31 km) by the ice sheet from a Lucerne granite outcrop, perches precariously on the edge of the South Bubble. The mountains are 830 feet (250 m) in height.

Garland Farm is a historic house and garden property at 475 Bay View Drive in Bar Harbor, Maine. The property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005, is significant as the last home of the noted landscape designer Beatrix Farrand, and is now owned by the Beatrix Farrand Society. The property is open to the public, and houses a research library of Farrand materials, as well as gardens established by Farrand in the later years of her life.

The MDI Biological Laboratory (MDIBL), formerly known as Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is an independent non-profit biomedical research institution founded in 1898 and located in Salisbury Cove, Maine, on Mount Desert Island. Its mission is to improve human health and well- being through basic research, education, and development ventures that transform discoveries into cures. In 2013, the Laboratory was designated a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) by the National Institutes of Health, which awarded the Laboratory a grant of $13 million over five years to expand the institution’s research program. The MDI Biological Laboratory has a full-time staff of 63, and will offer 23 research training courses in 2014.

Salsbury Cove is an unincorporated village in the town of Bar Harbor, Hancock County, Maine, United States. The community is located along Maine State Route 3, 10.3 miles (16.6 km) southeast of Ellsworth. Salsbury Cove has a post office with ZIP code 04672.

Jordan Pond is an oligotrophic tarn in Acadia National Park near the town of Bar Harbor, Maine. The pond covers 187 acres (76 ha) to a maximum depth of 150 feet (46 m) with a shoreline of 3.6 miles (5.8 km).The pond was formed by the Wisconsin Ice Sheet during the last glacial period. Penobscot Mountain (1194 ft) rises to the west, while Pemetic Mountain (1247 ft) rises to the east. Two roche moutonnées known as The Bubbles (North and South) rise above the northeastern shoreline. The southern end is constrained by glacial debris and an artificial dam.The pond has clear water, with visibility normally 44 feet (13.4 m) and occasionally recorded up to 61 feet (18.6 m), the deepest recordings in Maine. The pond exhibits high levels of dissolved oxygen, and low levels of plant nutrients and plant life.Some types of boating are permitted, but people and pets are prohibited from entering the water as it is the water supply for the village of Seal Harbor.

The Higgins Barn is a historic English barn at 256 Oak Hill Road in Indian Point, a rural area in western Bar Harbor, Maine. It is estimated to have been built c. 1810 by Ichabod Higgins, and is one of the oldest structures in the area, dating to the first settlement period of Indian Point. The barn was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004.

The Cover Farm is an historic farmstead on Maine State Route 3 in the Hulls Cove village of Bar Harbor, Maine on Mount Desert Island. Its centerpiece is an early 19th-century Cape, set on a parcel of land owned until 1810 by the granddaughter of the island's original French proprietor, Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. In the early 20th century, the property was transformed into a summer estate, with the addition of a Colonial Revival wing and a walled garden. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1995.

The Hulls Cove High School is a historic former school building on Maine State Route 3 in the Hulls Cove village of Bar Harbor, Maine. It is locally distinctive for its architecture, having been designed by the firm of Andrews, Jaques & Rantoul, which was responsible for designing a number of Bar Harbor's large summer estates. The school was built in 1909 and was used until the 1940s, after which it was converted to a community center. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.
