Balmain Hospital Main Building is a hospital building and former cottage in Balmain, Inner West Council, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It was the original building of and remains the administration building for the Balmain Hospital. It was designed by E. J. Bowen and built in 1880. It is also known as the Administration Building, and includes the Evans Ward and the Victoria Ward. The property is owned by the NSW Department of Health. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

Balmain is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. Balmain is located 2 km (1.2 mi) west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Inner West Council. It is located on the Balmain peninsula surrounded by Port Jackson, adjacent to the suburbs of Rozelle to the south-west, Birchgrove to the north-west, and Balmain East to the east. Iron Cove sits on the western side of the peninsula, with White Bay on the south-east side and Mort Bay on the north-east side. Traditionally blue collar, Balmain was where the industrial roots of the trade unionist movement began. It has become established in Australian working-class culture and history, due to being the place where the Australian Labor Party formed in 1891 and its social history and status is of high cultural significance to both Sydney and New South Wales. Today, the ALP contends with the Australian Greens for political prominence in Balmain, and Kobi Shetty of the Greens holds the State seat of Balmain.

The Lever Brothers Factory was a soap factory in the suburb of Balmain in Sydney, Australia, which operated from 1895 until 1988. It employed many people from the local area and its large industrial buildings were a prominent feature of the landscape. Most of the site was demolished in 1996 to make way for an apartment complex, and only three of the original buildings remain.

Balmain Hospital (formerly Balmain Cottage Hospital and Balmain District Hospital) is a public hospital in the suburb of Balmain in Sydney, Australia. It was founded in 1885 and provides outpatient, rehabilitation, aged care and general practice/casualty services.The hospital commenced operation in 1885 in an adapted cottage, which survives as the hospital's administration building and is now heritage listed. A series of additions and new buildings occurred throughout its early decades: a new wing (the Evans Ward) opened in March 1890, a new outpatient, women's and children's wing (the Victoria Ward) opened in September 1901, it underwent major refurbishment in 1908 and a new children's ward opened in September 1924.It expanded significantly in the 1920s, increasing from 40 beds to 120 beds and experiencing a doubling of treated patients. Complaints about run-down, overcrowded and otherwise poor hospital facilities were common through the late 1920s and into the 1930s. New women's and children's wards opened in 1935 and new nurses quarters' (Stacey House) in 1937. A major new four-storey building, Thornton House, was added in 1943.The hospital underwent a significant downgrade and refocus c. 1993, with the closure of the emergency department and change in focus to provide primarily for aged care and rehabilitation, though a new casualty department opened shortly afterwards to deal with remaining unmet need.The Balmain Hospital Main Building is listed on the New South Wales Heritage Register.

Dick's Hotel is a pub located in Balmain, a suburb in the inner west region of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The pub was built by John Dick, a local publican of note, in 1872 on the corner of Beattie and Montague Streets. The pub was known as Lean's Hotel from 1886 to 1898 when owned by Jabez Lean, but reverted to its former name after and has remained as such since.The hotel was the location for a number of community meetings following a number of drowning events across NSW. Then on the 8 February 1894 a unanimous decision was reached to establish an Australian Branch of the Life Saving Society of Great Britain (later to become the Royal Life Saving Society in 1904). Associated with the political movements of the late nineteenth century, especially the growing labour movement, it was also the scene for farewells to contingents from NSW to the Boxer Rebellion and the Boer War. The hotel did not suffer unduly from Darling Street overtaking Beattie Street as the main thoroughfare of the suburb with the introduction of tramways, but rather grew through its rivalry with the three-story Exchange Hotel opposite, built 1886.Both pubs enjoy a lively competition to this day.

The Volunteer Hotel was a pub in the suburb of Balmain in the Inner West of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia. The pub is named because of its association with a group of volunteer firefighters. The fire bell was located across the road in Darling Street and when it rang, the volunteers would gather and proceed on to the fire. Once their work was complete, they would meet at the hotel for refreshment. The hotel was established before November 1865.The hotel closed in 1928 and from 1930 was the location of Mrs Riley's confectionery shop. It is now a private residence.
