Blackbutt Reserve

Kotara railway station is located on the Main Northern line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the southern Newcastle suburb of Kotara, opening on 12 November 1924.Despite being located in the same suburb, the station is a significant distance from the busy Westfield Kotara and Kotara Home Homemakers Centre, and although these busy locations are alongside the railway line, there is no station there. Blackbutt Reserve is located 400m north of the station and is a popular destination for locals, but there is no pedestrian access from the station to the reserve, limiting any potential use for the station, and as a result, the station gets low patronage (averaging just 40 passengers a day in 2013).

The John Hunter Hospital and John Hunter Children's Hospital (sometimes known as the JHH and JHCH respectively, or more colloquially The John Hunter) is the principal referral centre and a tertiary hospital for Newcastle, and northern New South Wales, Australia. The 796 bed hospital is the main teaching hospital of the University of Newcastle. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area, and has the busiest emergency department in the state. John Hunter is the busiest trauma hospital in the state, and the second-busiest in the country behind The Alfred Hospital in Victoria.

The Hunter Medical Research Institute or HMRI is a medical research institute located in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1998, the research institute is a partnership between the University of Newcastle, Australia, Hunter New England Local Health District and the community. It aims to improve health and wellbeing of its communities.

New Lambton is a suburb of Newcastle, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It is located about 6 km (4 mi) west of the Newcastle central business district. It includes two shopping districts, schools and other general facilities. At the 2016 Australian census it had a population of approximately 10,000.Initially a coal mining township, New Lambton later became a municipality until it was eventually incorporated into Greater Newcastle. The suburb, which is primarily residential, includes a 182 ha (450-acre) nature reserve and a major regional sports centre.

Westfield Kotara (previously known as Kotara Fair and Garden City) is a large shopping centre in the suburb of Kotara in Newcastle.

The Tickhole Tunnel, also called the Kotara (Tickhole) Railway Tunnel, is a heritage-listed double track railway tunnel that carries the Main Northern railway line beneath the Newcastle Inner City Bypass (A37) and is a diversion over the Tickhole Creek. The tunnel is located between Cardiff and Kotara stations in the City of Newcastle local government area of New South Wales, Australia.The original 161-metre (176 yd) tunnel opened on 15 August 1887. It initially only had one track, but provision was made for the line to be duplicated which duly occurred in 1891. As part of the electrification of the line, in 1983 tenders were called for a second tunnel, of 205 metres (673 ft), completed in 1984. This second tunnel is used by southbound services, while the original tunnel once again became single track for northbound services.

Adamstown Heights is a southern suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 8 kilometres (5 mi) west-southwest of Newcastle's central business district along the Pacific Highway. It is split between the City of Lake Macquarie and City of Newcastle local government areas. On 6 September 1991 Adamstown heights officially become a suburb of Newcastle.The Awabakal are the traditional people of this area.The suburb contains two schools, Kotara High School, established in 1968 and containing 3 hectares of native bushland, and also established in 1968 Belair Public School. The suburb is served by Westfield Kotara shopping centre, formerly Garden City Kotara, and originally Kotara Fair, on its northern border. Adamstown Heights is located on several bus routes and is near two railway stations on the Central Coast & Newcastle Line, Kotara and Adamstown. Adamstown Heights had a population of 5,299 in 2016.

Highfields is a residential suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 8 kilometres (5 mi) west-southwest of Newcastle's central business district near the Charlestown town centre. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie local government area.

New Lambton Heights is a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia, located 9 kilometres (6 mi) west of Newcastle's central business district. It is split between the City of Lake Macquarie and City of Newcastle local government areas. The Aboriginal people, in this area, the Awabakal, were the first people of this land.The suburb is the location of a major hospital complex that includes the John Hunter, John Hunter Children's, Rankin Park and Newcastle Private hospitals, and the Royal Newcastle Centre, which was previously known as the Royal Newcastle Hospital before it moved from its original site near Newcastle Beach. Also in the suburb are water reservoirs, a primary school and several small bushland reserves. It is largely populated by doctors and other hospital staff, and hence is generally regarded within the higher end of Newcastle's socio-economic scale, along with suburbs such as Merewether Heights. The suburb is very leafy with established native trees. Parts of the suburb border the Blackbutt Nature Reserve, which is a large native bushland park maintained by the City of Newcastle. The park, sometimes called the lungs of the city, includes hiking trails, picnicking areas, and a native animal enclosure which houses kangaroos, wallabies, koalas, wombats, emus and native birds. The suburb contains one school; New Lambton Heights Infants School, (public school) which is one of Newcastle's best starter schools. New Lambton, the neighbouring suburb to the east, has a well regarded primary school. New Lambton also contains good suburban shopping with boutiques, cafes, gift shops, a supermarket and services such as post office, medical, banks etc. The suburb is also located close to Westfield Kotara, a large shopping mall to the south east.

Kotara High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located in Adamstown Heights, a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1968, the school enrolled approximately 1,070 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom three percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eleven percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education and its current principal is Mark Sneddon.
