The Air Force Historical Research Agency (AFHRA) is the repository for United States Air Force historical documents. The Agency's collection began during World War II in Washington, D.C., and moved in 1949 to Maxwell Air Force Base, the site of Air University, to provide research facilities for professional military education students, the faculty, visiting scholars, and the general public.The U.S Air Force History Office in Bolling Air Force Base Building 5681 in Washington, D.C., houses microfilm copies of archival materials in the United States Air Force Historical Research Center at Maxwell Air Force Base.Published guides of the collection include the Air Force Historical Archives Document Classification Guide (1971), Personal Papers in the USAF Historical Research Center compiled by Richard E. Morse and Thomas C. Lobenstein (1980), U.S. Air Force Oral History Catalog (1982), and the United States Air Force History: A Guide to Documentary Sources.

Fairchild Memorial Hall houses the Air University (AU) library at Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama. The premier library in the United States Department of Defense, the AU Library holds especially strong collections in the fields of warfare, aeronautics, United States Air Force and DOD operations, military sciences, international relations, military education, leadership and management. Named for General Muir S. Fairchild, the founder and first commander of Air University, the library serves as the focal point of faculty and student research, holding more than 2.9 million items.

The Maxwell Air Force Base Senior Officer's Quarters Historic District is an 81-acre (33 ha) historic district on Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. It includes 150 contributing buildings, most of them houses for Air Force senior officers. They are built in the French Provincial architectural style and date to the 1930s. The district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 2, 1988.

Simler Hall (also known as Building 836) is the oldest building on Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Alabama. Built in 1927, it now serves as the headquarters for the Community College of the Air Force (CCAF). It is named for General George B. Simler, the commander of the Air Training Command and primary proponent of the CCAF's creation. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988.

Building 800–Austin Hall is located in Montgomery, Alabama on the grounds of Maxwell Air Force Base.

The Powder Magazine is a historic building in Montgomery, Alabama. The gunpowder magazine was built in 1861 west of the city on a bluff overlooking the Alabama River. Gunpowder for the Confederate Army was stored there during the Civil War, and afterward it was used for general storage. A public park was proposed for the site as early as the 1970s, but the area lay empty until the opening of an artificial whitewater park in 2023. The magazine is a one-story brick building with a pyramidal roof. The walls are 24 inches (61 cm) thick, and the entry door has an iron sill and iron bars. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.

The Wharton–Chappell House is a historic residence in Montgomery, Alabama. The house was built in 1854 by William G. Wharton, who owned a brick works on an adjacent property. He sold the property in 1859 to Thomas Dorsey, whose widow married James Chappell in 1865. Chappell amassed over 450 acres (180 ha) of farmland on Montgomery's west side, including land surrounding the house. The house remained in the Chappell family until 1928. It was sold to the federal government in 1935, where the Public Works Administration built a housing project named Riverside Heights. The house was converted into offices for the complex, which opened in 1937 and was transferred to the city housing authority in 1939. The complex closed in 2006 and demolished in 2009, with only the house remaining. An artificial whitewater rafting park was opened on the site in 2023. The house is a single-story brick building in Greek Revival style. The original façade is five bays wide; the 1958 ell addition adds two bays recessed on the west (left) side. The entry is covered by a hipped roof portico supported by paired Doric columns. The entry door is flanked by a transom and sidelights. The interior has a central hall with four rooms to the right, accessed through a vestibule. The 1958 ell lies to the left, and features a long hallway flanked by offices. A rear service building was added in 1935, and is accessed via a covered rear porch. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.

The Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery (FPC Montgomery) is a minimum-security United States federal prison for male inmates in Montgomery, Alabama. It is operated by the Federal Bureau of Prisons, a division of the United States Department of Justice. FPC Montgomery is located on the grounds of Maxwell Air Force Base, in northwest Montgomery, Alabama.

Maxwell Air Force Base (IATA: MXF, ICAO: KMXF, FAA LID: MXF), officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base, is a United States Air Force (USAF) installation under the Air Education and Training Command (AETC). The installation is located in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Occupying the site of the first Wright Flying School, it was named in honor of Second Lieutenant William C. Maxwell, a native of Atmore, Alabama. The base is the headquarters of Air University (AU), a major component of Air Education and Training Command (AETC), and is the U.S. Air Force's center for Joint Professional Military Education (PME). The host wing for Maxwell-Gunter is the 42d Air Base Wing (42 ABW). The Air Force Reserve Command's 908th Airlift Wing (908 AW) is a tenant unit and the only operational flying unit at Maxwell. The 908 AW and its subordinate 357th Airlift Squadron (357 AS) operates eight C-130H Hercules aircraft for theater airlift in support of combatant commanders worldwide. As an AFRC airlift unit, the 908th is operationally gained by the Air Mobility Command (AMC). Gunter Annex is a separate installation under the 42 ABW. Originally known as Gunter Field, it later became known as Gunter Air Force Station (Gunter AFS) when its runways were closed and its operational flying activity eliminated. It was later renamed Gunter Air Force Base (Gunter AFB) during the 1980s. As a hedge against future Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) closure actions, Gunter AFB was consolidated under Maxwell AFB in March 1992 to create a combined installation known as Maxwell/Gunter AFB. Maxwell AFB is also the site of Federal Prison Camp, Montgomery, a minimum security facility for male inmates.

Wright Brothers Park is an urban park in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. The park was renamed from Overlook Park to Wright Brothers Park on July 2, 2013, in dedication to the Wright Brothers. The park underwent renovations and redecoration for the dedication. One of the objects of redecoration is a full-scale replica of the Wright Flyer which is right above the Alabama River.Wright Brothers Park features beautiful views of the Alabama River and the surrounding area. Picnic shelters with off-street parking provide a pleasant place for a family picnic. Amenities include benches, trails with views of the river, and a playground. The park has four picnic tables under a gazebo overlooking the Alabama River (Maxwell Boulevard).

The Cottage Hill Historic District is a 42-acre (17 ha) historic district in Montgomery, Alabama. It is roughly bounded by Goldthwaite, Maxwell, Holt, and Clayton streets and contains 116 contributing buildings, the majority of them in the Queen Anne style. The district was placed on the Alabama Register of Landmarks and Heritage on April 16, 1975, and the National Register of Historic Places on November 7, 1976.

The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church, also known as the Mount Zion AME Zion Church Memorial Annex, is a historic church in Montgomery, Alabama, United States. Located on 467 Holt Street, it was built in 1899 and extensively remodeled in 1921. In 1955 the Montgomery Improvement Association, who organized the Montgomery bus boycott, was formed in the building. During the Selma to Montgomery marches in 1965, marchers rested at the church on their way to the Capitol. It is included on the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. The congregation moved to a new location in 1990, and on November 4, 2002, the building was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The sides of the building are decorated with murals depicting Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and the Selma to Montgomery marches.
