The Royal Hotel is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a town in England. In 1725, an assembly room or "Long Room" was constructed on St Nicholas Street, reputedly to a design by Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington. It contained an Egyptian-themed hall, measuring 112 feet (34 m) by 40 feet (12 m), and as high as it was wide. This became the principal location for grand balls in the town in the 18th century. Around 1800, it was purchased by Richard Donner, and was renamed "Donner's Rooms". In 1820, Donner turned the building into a hotel, by adding bedrooms. He sold the building in about 1840, and the new owners renamed it as the "Royal Hotel". In 1847, they added Donner's former house to the hotel, then in 1862 a new block was added, to a design by Henry Wyatt. In 1897, some of the first films shown in the UK were exhibited in the hotel by Louis Lumière. In 1935, the hotel was purchased by the Laughton family, who demolished the billiards room and constructed a new dining room in its place. They also purchased many paintings by well-known artists for display in the hotel, several of which are now in the collection of Scarborough Art Gallery. During this period, Winston Churchill once stayed as a guest. In the early 21st century, the hotel was owned by English Rose Hotels. In 2012, it was purchased by Britannia Hotels, at which time, it had 118 bedrooms. The hotel is on a curved corner site. It is stuccoed, and has a cornice, a parapet, four storeys and a complex plan. The main front has two and three-storey canted bay windows with Corinthian colonnettes, and along the middle two floors are continuous balconies. The doorway is flanked by Composite columns. Inside, there is a grand staircase hall rising the full height of the building, with a curved iron staircase. The first floor lounge retains mid-19th century plasterwork and a marble fireplace. The ballroom may retain some fabric from the original Long Room, but is heavily altered. The building has been grade II listed since 1973.

23 and 24 King Street is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a town in England. King Street has been a commercial area for many centuries, housing an apple market until 1880. 23 and 24 King Street was built in the mid 18th century as a large house. It was altered in about 1800, when a large bay window was added. Later in the century it became the York Hotel, operating until late in the 20th century, when it was converted into two houses. The building was grade II* listed in 1953. The building is constructed of red brick on a stone plinth, with stone dressings, quoins, a moulded string course, a frieze, and a moulded cornice. It has three storeys and a basement, and two bays. The right bay contains a two-storey segmental bow window, and to its left is a doorway with an eared architrave, pilaster strips, a large decorated fanlight, and a cornice hood on carved scroll brackets. The other windows are sashes with keystones. At the rear is a two-storey roughcast wing with a public house front, including pilasters and a cornice. Inside, both houses have early panelling, and 23 King Street has an early staircase and corner fireplaces.

The British town of Scarborough has had a total of five cliff railways, or funiculars, two of which are presently operational. The town is home to the first funicular railway in the United Kingdom.Having noted the need for better transit between the town and its bays, particularly for tourists, the construction of Scarborough's first funicular commenced in 1873. Designed by William Lucas and built by Crossley Brothers on a route between Scarborough Spa on South Sands and the South Cliff Esplanade, this water-driven lift was opened on 6 July 1875. During subsequent years, multiple other funiculars were constructed; in all, two lifts served Scarborough's North Bay while three covered the South Bay. Various means of propulsion, from steam power to electricity have been used over the years, while other upgrades such as automated operations have been implemented as well. While some of these funiculars remain operational, others have been permanently withdrawn: both of the North Bay railways have been demolished, while one on South Bay is extant but out of use since 2006. The other two South Cliff lifts are still operational. Reasons for closures have included unsuitable terrain, insufficient revenue, excessive capacity in relation to demand and excessive refurbishment/upgrade costs.

14 and 17 St Nicholas Street is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a town in England. The building was constructed in the early or mid 18th century, as a pair of large houses, one of which was for the Bell family. In the 20th century, the ground floor was converted into shops, and the upper floors into flats. The building was grade II* listed in 1953. The Victoria County History describes is as the finest domestic building of its date in the town. The building is constructed of red brick, with flanking fluted stone Ionic pilasters, with carved capitals, an entablature, and a parapet with a moulded string course. It has four storeys and is five bays wide. In the centre is an arched doorway with fluted Ionic pilasters, an entablature, a curved frieze, a pediment and a mask keystone. Inside, steps lead to a recessed door with an arched fanlight, and the entrance is flanked by modern shopfronts. The windows are sashes with segmental heads and fluted keystones, those in the middle bay with architraves. Inside, both houses are accessed through the same central passageway, off which are doors, beyond which the original staircases survive. Several rooms retain their original panelling.

The Central Tramway Company is an electric-powered funicular railway located in the holiday resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The company has the distinction of being the oldest surviving Tramway Company in the UK, as the original corporation still operates the funicular today. Built in just 6 months between January and August 1881, the Tramway opened on Monday 1 August becoming the 3rd such cliff railway to operate in the borough. The distinctive burgundy and cream carriages travel up and down the 248-foot (76 m) track between the bottom station on Foreshore Road, next to the beach and tourist arcades, and the top station on Marine Parade, close to the town centre.

The Grand Hotel is a large hotel in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, England, overlooking the town's South Bay. It is a Grade II* listed building and owned by Britannia Hotels. At the time of its grand opening in 1867, it was the largest hotel and the largest brick structure in Europe.

The house is built of red brick, with floor bands, a frieze and a slate roof. It has three storeys, a basement and an attic, and three bays. The doorway in the right bay is approached by steps, and has engaged Corinthian columns, a semicircular fanlight, a broken entablature with a vase in relief, and an open pediment. The windows are sashes with flat gauged arches, in the basement is a tripartite sash window, and the attic has a wide dormer. The steps and basement area have cast iron railings with shaped arrow heads. Inside, the original staircase survives.

The house is built of red brick, with chamfered rusticated quoins, a moulded cornice and blocking course, and a slate roof. There are three storeys, a basement and an attic, and three bays. The doorway in the right bay is approached by steps, and has engaged Corinthian columns, a semicircular fanlight, a broken entablature with a vase in relief, and an open pediment. The windows are sashes, and there is a gabled dormer. The steps and basement area have iron railings with double scrolled leaf heads. Inside, the original staircase survives.

Cliff End House is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a town in England. The house was probably built in the 1760s. It is an early example of a house built with sea views, though it is not solely oriented towards the sea. Historic England note that it forms part of an important group with Cliff Bridge Terrace. It was grade II* listed in 1953. The house is built of painted brick with a dentilled cornice and a slate roof. The south front has four storeys and an attic, the east, entrance, front is gabled and has three storeys and an attic, and both fronts have three bays. The doorway in the right bay has panelled pilasters, a semicircular fanlight with an Ionic motif, fluted scroll brackets, a broken entablature and an open pediment. The windows are sashes, some tripartite, with flat stucco arches, the attic window on the entrance front has a round-arched head, and there are three dormers.

Scarborough () is a seaside town in the district and county of North Yorkshire, England. With a population of 61,749, Scarborough is the largest town on the Yorkshire Coast and the fourth-largest settlement in the county.It is located on the North Sea coastline. Historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire, the town lies between 10 and 230 feet (3–70 m) above sea level, from the harbour rising steeply north and west towards limestone cliffs. The older part of the town lies around the harbour and is protected by a rocky headland which extends into the North Sea. The town has fishing and service industries, including a growing digital and creative economy, as well as being a tourist destination. Residents of the town are known as Scarborians.

Talbot House is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, a town in England. Talbot House was built in the mid or late 18th century, on Queen Street in the centre of Scarborough. It was originally two separate houses, which were later combined to form the Talbot Hotel. In the early 19th century, it was extended to both left and right. The building was grade II* listed in 1953, and in the late 20th century was converted into a house. The building is constructed of painted brick and has a slate roof. The central block has three storeys and a basement and four bays, floor bands, and an entablature with a triglyph frieze. There is a Greek Doric porch with fluted columns and an entablature, and to its left is a yard entrance infilled with a doorway. Above the porch is a bow window, and to the right is a two-storey bow window. The left extension has three storeys and two bays, and a bracketed frieze and cornice. The right bay contains a bow window with a moulded and dentilled cornice and iron cresting, and to its left is a plain round-arched doorway. The right extension has three storeys and a basement, and three bays. The doorway in the right bay has engaged Corinthian columns, a broken entablature, and an open pediment, and to its left is a two-storey canted bay window. The other windows in all parts are sashes, and the basement areas are enclosed by iron railings. Inside few original features remain other than one staircase.

Scarborough Market Hall is a historic building in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, in England. Markets were held in various locations in Scarborough, but by the early 19th century, the main location was Newborough, which was considered inconvenient. In 1853, a private company built a market hall on St Helen's Square, and this gradually replaced the other markets, the last street market being that of the corn merchants on King Street, running until the 1950s. The building was designed by J. Irvine in the neoclassical style, though the Victoria County History describes it as being of "no architectural distinction". The building was grade II listed in 1973. In 2017, the market was restored and a mezzanine was added, at a total cost of £2 million. The market hall is built of stone, with a rusticated basement. There are seven bays, the outer bays flanked by rusticated pilasters. The other bays contain round-headed arches with three-quarter Doric columns, the outer ones with doorways and the others with windows. Above is a large cornice, and a pediment containing a semicircular window. The outer bays contain circular motifs. Flanking the hall are lower wings containing round-headed blind arches. Inside are a variety of fixed and temporary stalls, selling a wide variety of goods and also hosting four cafes. Under the main hall is a vaulted basement with additional stalls.
