Pontarlier station

The canton of Pontarlier is an administrative division of the Doubs department, eastern France. Its borders were modified at the French canton reorganisation which came into effect in March 2015. Its seat is in Pontarlier.It consists of the following communes:

Pontarlier (French: [pɔ̃.taʁ.lje] ; Latin: Ariolica) is a commune and one of the two sub-prefectures of the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France near the Swiss border.

The arrondissement of Pontarlier is an arrondissement of France in the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. It has 147 communes. Its population is 112,913 (2016), and its area is 2,050.5 km2 (791.7 sq mi).

The Battle of Pontarlier, also known as the Battle of Pontarlier-La Cluse, was the final military operation of the Franco-Prussian War, that took place from January 29 to February 2, 1871, near Pontarlier and La Cluse-et-Mijoux, not long after the newly formed German Empire and French Republic had a ceasefire. During these engagements, the German Army of the South, under the command of Lieutenant General Edwin von Manteuffel won over the French Eastern Army under the command of General Justin Clinchant, the battle forced the French Eastern Army to withdraw to neutral Switzerland. The strong efforts of the German armies led by General August von Werder in The previous Battle of the Lisaine, as well as that of General Von Manteuffel's armies at the Battle of Pontarlier, resulted in the collapse of the assault on southern Germany which the Eastern Army had expected to be ruined. At the same time, the defeat of the Eastern Army finally forced the French Interior Minister Léon Gambetta to end resistance to the Germans. The defeat at Pontarlier also brought the French heavy losses, including a large number of soldiers being taken prisoner.

Pontarlier Airfield (ICAO: LFSP) is a French municipal aerodrome located near Pontarlier in the department of Doubs, region of Franche-Comté, 400 km southeast of Paris. It is managed by the town of Pontarlier, and is open to the public.The land around Pontarlier Airport is hilly in the east and flat in the west. The highest part is located 6.4 km east of Pontarlier Airport, and has an elevation of 1,275 meters above sea level. The area around the airport has a population density of 56 people per square kilometer.

Doubs (French pronunciation: [du] ) is a commune in the Doubs department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region in eastern France. It lies on the river Doubs, adjacent to the north of Pontarlier.
