Lake Poway

Poway High School is a four-year secondary school in southern California accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Established in 1961, its approximately 2,408 students are from the city of Poway and the community of Rancho Bernardo in San Diego. The school has curricula for university-bound, college-bound, and vocation-bound graduates. About 1% of the high school's graduates join the military, 3% get civilian employment; 1% enroll in special schools, 37% enroll in two-year colleges, and 54% go to four-year colleges and universities. Some of its alumni are famous athletes.

Potato Chip Rock is a natural tourist attraction near San Diego, California. It is located on the Mt. Woodson summit and is famous for resembling a potato chip. It is located in an unincorporated part of San Diego County between Poway and Ramona. There is no drinking water, toilet facilities, or rangers along any route to Potato Chip Rock. At least 400,000 hikers visit this San Diego open preserve each year. The rock is located at the top of the mountain, at an elevation between 2700 and 2800 ft. The hike to the rock takes approximately one to two hours. Potato Chip Rock sits 100 feet below the summit. One popular way to reach the rock is through a 6.6-mile round trip hike from the Lake Poway trailhead to the west. There are two other popular routes to the top that start on the east side of Mount Woodson. A short route begins from free parking areas along Route 67, with an entrance at 16310 Highway 67, and follows Mt. Woodson Road up to the rock. This 3.75-mile round-trip hike is paved and steep. The Fry-Kogel trail is the third route to the rock, and is about 4 miles long.The rock is thin and more than 7 feet long, and it looks as if it is about to fall.The rock was used as an April Fools' Day prank by Poway Mayor Steve Vaus in 2017. In a tweet, he wrote that part of the rock had snapped off and fallen into Lake Poway below. He even added a picture for "proof".

KZTC-LD (channel 7) is a low-power television station in San Diego, California, United States. The station owned by Civic Light, Inc. KZTC-LD transmits from Mount Woodson, northeast of Poway, and serves mainly the northwest portion of coastal San Diego County. Its signal also reaches other parts of east San Diego County, albeit with some interference. When the station is on the air with its VHF signal on channel 7, it blocks Los Angeles' ABC-owned KABC-TV, which also has a digital signal on channel 7 that can be received when KZTC is off the air for whatever reason. The station went from airing infomercials to rebroadcasting the now-defunct MundoFox network from the second digital subchannel of XHDTV-TDT (49.2), a MyNetworkTV affiliate, operated by Entravision Communications. Owner Civic Light Television claims to have operated low-power television operations in the San Diego area since 1990, when the FCC began to authorize television stations of that type. While KZTC's license goes back to 1990 when it operated on UHF channel 63 as "Bay 63" (with the call sign K63EN), it moved to analog VHF channel 7 in July 2010 in order to vacate the defunct channel 52-69 channel space in the FCC's revised UHF bandplan. "Bay 63" originally operated from a small suite in a medical arts building at 2850 6th Avenue in the Hillcrest district of downtown San Diego, adjacent to Balboa Park. The station showed San Diego City Council proceedings and other public domain shows. It was an affiliate of the "Shop at Home" network (now ShopHQ) during the time it operated from downtown San Diego. Because the station operated from the top floor of the building, it was also known for broadcasting nightly the sun setting off San Diego Bay. The station attempted to gain commercial traction by being carried by the predominant San Diego cable TV operator, Cox Communications. But those attempts were unsuccessful despite petition drives and ads put in the local television listing magazine at the time published in the Sunday edition of the San Diego Union-Tribune.

Woodson Mountain, or widely known as Mount Woodson is a mountain near Poway, California and is known for Potato Chip Rock which located to the west of the summit.

The Poway synagogue shooting occurred on April 27, 2019, at Chabad of Poway synagogue in Poway, California, United States, a city approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of San Diego, on the last day of the Jewish Passover holiday, which fell on a Shabbat. Armed with an AR-15 style rifle, the gunman, John Earnest, fatally shot one woman and injured three other persons, including the synagogue's rabbi. After fleeing the scene, Earnest phoned 9-1-1 and reported the shooting. He was apprehended in his car approximately two miles (3.2 km) from the synagogue by a San Diego police officer. A month before the shooting, Earnest had attempted to burn down a mosque in Escondido. In September 2021, Earnest was sentenced by a state court in San Diego County to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 121 years to life and another 16 years as part of a plea agreement. In December he was sentenced in federal court to life in prison with no chance of parole, plus 30 years, with the federal and state life sentences running consecutively instead of concurrently.

Chabad of Poway is an Orthodox synagogue and community center located at 16934 Chabad Way, Poway, San Diego County, California, in the United States. The congregation was founded in 1986, and the synagogue, completed in 1997, includes a 770-seat sanctuary, preschool, afternoon Hebrew school, senior center, library, and mikveh, serving the Jewish communities of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. On April 27, 2019, the synagogue was the site of a shooting in which one person was killed and three were injured.

The Poway–Midland Railroad is a heritage railroad located in Old Poway Park in Poway, California. The group "Poway–Midland Railroad Volunteers, Inc." operates the railroad and was founded in 1991 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration, operation and maintenance of antique railroad equipment. Excursions are run each weekend (the 1st and 3rd weekends of each month using a 1907 Baldwin 0-4-0 steam locomotive, except in January or February). The line has 11 total pieces of railroad equipment. This operation is unusual in that it has a track gauge of 3 ft 6 in (1,067 mm) narrow gauge.The Poway–Midland Railroad is owned by the City of Poway and operated and maintained by the Poway–Midland Railroad Volunteers, Inc.

San Dieguito River Park is a greenway of 92,000-acre (37,000 ha) in San Diego County, California, United States. The park, established in 1989, stretches for 55 miles (89 km) from the mouth of the San Dieguito Lagoon (a lagoon between Solana Beach and Del Mar) to the Volcan Mountain Wilderness Preserve close to Julian, following the San Dieguito River. The park is a joint powers authority comprising the county of San Diego and cities of Del Mar, Escondido, Poway, San Diego, and Solana Beach. The park contains the Coast to Crest Trail with the planned length of 70 miles (110 km). As of 2017, 45 miles (72 km) of the Coast to Crest Trail have been built, as were 20 miles (32 km) of auxiliary trails. Open space within the park is a home to multiple species, including 230 birds. Coastal sage scrub habitat includes Least Bell's Vireo, Cactus wren, California gnatcatcher and San Diego horned lizard. A restoration project in the San Dieguito lagoon was completed in 2011 at the cost of 86 million dollars.

Palomar Medical Center Poway is a hospital in Poway, California, operated by Palomar Health. It opened in 1977.

Rancho San Bernardo was a 17,763-acre (71.88 km2) Mexican land grant in present-day San Diego County, California with two square leagues given in 1842 by Governor Juan B. Alvarado and an additional two square leagues given in 1845 by Governor Pío Pico to José Francisco Snook. The grant was between present-day Escondido and Poway, and encompassed present-day Rancho Bernardo, 4S Ranch, the San Pasqual Valley, and Lake Hodges.
