Poway () is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. Poway's rural roots influenced its motto "The City in the Country". The city had a population of 48,841 as of the 2020 United States census.Poway is part of San Diego's East County.

Rancho Paguai, named by the Mexicans after a local Kumeyaay village, was located in what is now the valley of Poway Creek and Poway Valley. It was a Mexican land grant rancho, granted by Governor Juan Alvarado on September 7, 1839, and confirmed May 22, 1840, to Rosario E. Aguilar a former Corporal of the San Diego Mission guard and the Majordomo of the Mission in 1838. However, Aguilar did not occupy or improve it and so forfeited the grant. He, having received an appointment as Juez de paz in 1841, afterward moved to San Juan Capistrano and took up land there. Details on the extent of the rancho are unknown.The city of Poway, California later developed on the land of this rancho that never came to fruition.

Poway High School is a four-year secondary school in southern California accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Established in 1961, its approximately 2,408 students are from the city of Poway and the community of Rancho Bernardo in San Diego. The school has curricula for university-bound, college-bound, and vocation-bound graduates. About 1% of the high school's graduates join the military, 3% get civilian employment; 1% enroll in special schools, 37% enroll in two-year colleges, and 54% go to four-year colleges and universities. Some of its alumni are famous athletes.

Palomar Medical Center Poway is a hospital in Poway, California, operated by Palomar Health. It opened in 1977.

Rancho Bernardo High School, or RBHS, is a public high school in the Poway Unified School District of San Diego County, California, United States. Rancho Bernardo High School was opened in 1991 as the district's third high school.

Rancho Encantada (also known as Stonebridge Estates) is a suburban neighborhood in San Diego, California, United States. It is bordered by the City of Poway to the north, the San Diego neighborhood of Scripps Ranch to the west, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar to the south, and unincorporated and undeveloped San Diego County to the east.Rancho Encantada, like Miramar Ranch North, is often considered a part of Scripps Ranch; it is included in the Scripps Ranch Planning Group, the Scripps Ranch Civic Association (SRCA) and most Scripps Ranch community activities. It includes the following tracts: Calabria, Serenity, Sanctuary, Scripps Preserve, Viscaya, Montoro, Bellasario, Toll Brothers (Viewpoint was to be custom homes; however, the lots were purchased by Toll Brothers and included within that development), Mill Creek, Tiburon, The Warmington Collection, and Astoria. It is the least walkable neighborhood of San Diego.

Carmel Mountain Ranch, sometimes shortened to simply Carmel Mountain, or abbreviated to CMR by local residents and organizations is a community of San Diego, California, United States, in the northeastern part of the city. Despite its name, Carmel Mountain Ranch is actually in the shadow of Black Mountain. Carmel Mountain proper is about 10 miles west of the Carmel Mountain Ranch neighborhood.

Fairway Village is a neighborhood division of Carmel Mountain Ranch, located along Stoney Gate Place, parallel to Ted Williams Parkway and crossed by Shoal Creek Drive, in San Diego, California.

Lake Poway is a dam and reservoir in Poway, California, United States. The dam is owned by the City of Poway and was constructed between 1970 and 1972 with the purpose of storing and supplying water, and providing recreational facilities to the community. A $3.2-million bond issue for construction of the dam was rejected by voters in 1964 and 1966, but passed with 87 percent in favor in 1969. Year-round fishing for trout, bass, catfish, sunfish and bluegill is available at the lake.

The Poway synagogue shooting occurred on April 27, 2019, at Chabad of Poway synagogue in Poway, California, United States, a city approximately 20 miles (32 km) north of San Diego, on the last day of the Jewish Passover holiday, which fell on a Shabbat. Armed with an AR-15 style rifle, the gunman, John Earnest, fatally shot one woman and injured three other persons, including the synagogue's rabbi. After fleeing the scene, Earnest phoned 9-1-1 and reported the shooting. He was apprehended in his car approximately two miles (3.2 km) from the synagogue by a San Diego police officer. A month before the shooting, Earnest had attempted to burn down a mosque in Escondido. In September 2021, Earnest was sentenced by a state court in San Diego County to life in prison without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 121 years to life and another 16 years as part of a plea agreement. In December he was sentenced in federal court to life in prison with no chance of parole, plus 30 years, with the federal and state life sentences running consecutively instead of concurrently.

Chabad of Poway is an Orthodox synagogue and community center located at 16934 Chabad Way, Poway, San Diego County, California, in the United States. The congregation was founded in 1986, and the synagogue, completed in 1997, includes a 770-seat sanctuary, preschool, afternoon Hebrew school, senior center, library, and mikveh, serving the Jewish communities of Poway and Rancho Bernardo. On April 27, 2019, the synagogue was the site of a shooting in which one person was killed and three were injured.
