It is located in a rural area between the small towns of Market Drayton and Newport: the civil parish had a total population of 599 at the 2001 census, rising to 732 at the 2011 Census. The closest neighbouring village is Ollerton, around 1 mile to the west.

It is about midway between the towns of Telford and Market Drayton. The village's name comes from the River Tern which runs through the village. The village formerly had a bus stop, where buses between Market Drayton and Telford used to stop, which has since been permanently closed.

Peplow Hall is a privately-owned 11,635 square feet (1,080.9 m2), 18th-century mansion at Peplow, near Hodnet, Shropshire. It is a Grade II* listed building.It is, currently, the seat of The Waters family (since mid 2015).

Quarry Wood nature reserve is a 7-acre (28,000 m2) woodland on the west side of the A41 road at Hinstock in Shropshire that is managed by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust. Oak, birch and occasional hornbeam grow alongside swathes of rhododendron. The sandstone cliffs were formed in the Triassic period, around 220 million years ago, when this part of the country was hot and dry and dinosaurs were first emerging. The quarry may have provided the stone for the tower of St Oswald's church in the village and also some of the older houses, though quarrying ceased in the 1890s. The wood once provided cover for vast flocks of roosting thrushes and finches and, between 1966 and 1985, around 20,000 birds were ringed there. These birds no longer roost in such numbers, but the wood is home to a variety of birds including Eurasian jays, tits, Eurasian nuthatches, great spotted woodpeckers and other common woodland birds.

Great Bolas (), or Bolas Magna, is a village in the Telford and Wrekin borough of Shropshire, England, It is situated north-west of Newport, and about eight miles north of Telford. It is part of the civil parish of Waters Upton. It is situated at the confluence of the Tern and the small River Meese. There is a hamlet called Little Bolas a short distance to the west. Another hamlet called Meeson, south of the River Meese, was formerly a separate township of Great Bolas parish.

Royal Air Force Tern Hill or RAF Tern Hill (ICAO: EGOE) was a Royal Air Force station at Ternhill in Shropshire, England, near the towns of Newport and Market Drayton. The station closed in 1976, with the technical and administrative site transferring to the British Army to become Borneo Barracks, later renamed Clive Barracks (after Major-General Robert Clive). The airfield part of the site was retained by the RAF and is now known as Tern Hill Airfield. It is predominantly used as a relief landing ground for helicopters of the No 1 Flying Training School, based at RAF Shawbury. The airfield is also home to the RAF's No. 632 Volunteer Gliding Squadron.
