Barningham Park

The Milbank Arms is a Grade II listed public house at Barningham, County Durham. Built in the early 19th century, it spent a period as a hotel before converting to a public house. It was one of the last public houses in the country to not include a bar counter when one was fitted in 2018. The public house, and former hotel, are named after local land owning family, the Milbanks, who have recently taken over the license.

Brignall village is located in an elevated position adjacent to the River Greta, about 2 km upstream from Greta Bridge. The village is within the Teesdale district of south-west County Durham, England, the nearest town is the market town of Barnard Castle. The village is best known for the scenic valley section of the River Greta known as Brignall Banks, which is a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Rokeby Park is a country house in the Palladian style in the civil parish of Rokeby, in Northern England. It is close to the confluence of the River Tees and River Greta, near Greta Bridge in what is now County Durham. It was historically in the North Riding of Yorkshire. It is the private home of Sir Andrew Morritt but is open to the public on selected days. The house is the original English home of the painting The Toilet of Venus by Diego Velázquez, now known in English as The Rokeby Venus. The original now hangs in the National Gallery, London and a copy in the saloon at Rokeby Park. Sir Walter Scott was a regular visitor to the house and used it as the setting for his narrative poem Rokeby in 1812. The building is of interest in its own right. Completed in 1735 (and known at the time as Rokeby Hall) by Sir Thomas Robinson, it is considered a fine example of the italianate Palladian style. Robinson owned it until 1769, when he sold it to JS Morritt, an ancestor of the current owner. Much of the present interior was designed by John Carr. The house contains the collection of fine needlework pictures by Anne Morritt (1726–1797), the unmarried sister of JS Morritt. There is also a rare surviving print room wallpapered with 18th-century prints.

Brignall Banks is a Site of Special Scientific Interest in the Teesdale district of south-west County Durham, England. It consists of a narrow belt of woodland on the steep slopes of the valleys of the River Greta and its tributary, Gill Beck, just west of Brignall village and about 6 km south of Barnard Castle. It is one of the largest expanses of semi-natural woodland in North-east England; a number of scarce species are present, indicating that it is ancient woodland. A varied lichen flora includes several species that are sensitive to air pollution and rare in County Durham, including some, such as Thelotrema lepadinum and Graphis scripta, that are indicator species for ancient woodland.

Rokeby ( ROHK-bee) is a civil parish about 2.5 miles from Barnard Castle, in the County Durham district, in the ceremonial county of Durham, England. The parish includes the hamlet of Greta Bridge. In 2011 the parish had a population of 158. The parish touches Barningham, Boldron, Bowes, Brignall, Egglestone Abbey, Westwick, Whorlton and Wycliffe with Thorpe. The A66 runs through the area. Rokeby shares a parish council with Brignall and Egglestone Abbey called "Rokeby, Brignall & Egglestone Abbey Parish Council".

Dalton is a village and civil parish in North Yorkshire in England. Dalton is situated about six miles north-west of Richmond and about five miles south-east of Barnard Castle within the council district of Richmondshire and close to the A66 trans-Pennine trunk road. It was listed in the Domesday book. The Dalton parish boundary includes the village itself as well the houses at Dalton Heights (off the road to Newsham) plus numerous surrounding farms. The population of the parish was 147 according to the 2001 census, increasing to 181 at the 2011 Census. Dalton includes a farming community, both arable and stock, and is sited on a stream or beck which is a tributary of the River Swale. The Dalton & Gayles Village Hall, which is shared with the neighbouring village of Gayles, is located in Dalton; there is also a Church of England church, St James's, built in 1897. The name Dalton comes from Old English and means farmstead or village in a valley.To the South of Dalton there are the remains of a camp called ‘Castle Steads’, and further south there is a block of stone called ‘Stone Man’ which used to be a landmark, until the stones were taken away to make fences. A mile south-east of the Stone Man, a stone chest was found which had a ‘kale pot’, said to have contained money.In 1835, an allowance of £40 was given to the schoolmaster by the Kirby-Ravensworth hospital for the education of the poor children. By 1890, there was a mixed school attended by 50 students.

Whorlton is a small village in County Durham, in England. It is situated near the River Tees and to the east of Barnard Castle. Whorlton Bridge is a 183 ft long suspension bridge which crosses the River Tees. It is Britain's 2nd oldest suspension bridge relying on original chainwork after the union bridge over the River Tweed.The village has a public house called 'The Bridge Inn'. Arthur Headlam and James Wycliffe Headlam were both born in the village.

New Forest is a civil parish in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. It lies 6 miles (10 km) west of Richmond. There is no village in the parish. It consists mainly of grouse moor, and the isolated farms of Helwith, Holgate, Kexwith, and Kersey Green. The population of the parish is estimated at 10.In Norman times the New Forest was a hunting forest, held by the Earls of Richmond together with the forest of Arkengarthdale to the west. In the Middle Ages there were lead mines and coal mines in the forest. It was a township in the large ancient parish of Kirkby Ravensworth until 1866, when it became a separate civil parish.The civil parish now shares a grouped parish council with the civil parish of Marske, known as Marske & New Forest Parish Council.
