It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance.In January 2004, the Italian historian Marino Vigano' speculated that it may have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci: after 7 years of studies, the Leonardo's Rivellino was recognized as a Da Vinci project.

The Locarno Film Festival is an annual film festival, held every August in Locarno, Switzerland. Founded in 1946, the festival screens films in various competitive and non-competitive sections, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short, avant-garde, and retrospective programs. The Piazza Grande section is held in an open-air venue that seats 8,000 spectators.The top prize of the festival is the Golden Leopard, awarded to the best film in the International Competition. Other awards include the Leopard of Honour for career achievement, and the Prix du Public, the public choice award.

The Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular, or Funicolare Locarno–Madonna del Sasso (FLMS) is a funicular railway near the city of Locarno in the Swiss canton of Ticino. The line links a lower station in the city center with the pilgrimage site of the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Sasso and the municipality of Orselina. It forms part of the route to the summit of nearby Cimetta mountain.A concession to build the line was first granted in 1897 and renewed in 1900. Construction began in 1904, and the line was completed in 1906. The original wooden bodies of the cars were replaced with the current metal bodies in 1958.Besides the terminal stations at Locarno and Orselina, the line serves three intermediate stations at Grand Hôtel, Belvedere, and the Sanctuary, although the Grand Hôtel station is not currently served, as the hotel is closed. At Orselina there is a connection with the cable car to Cardada, which in turn connects with a chairlift to the summit of Cimetta.From April to October, the line runs every 15 minutes throughout the day. The Madonna del Sasso is a Marian Pontifical shrine in Orselina, above the city of Locarno in Switzerland. It is the principal sight and goal of religious pilgrimage in the city. It is one of two namesake churches, the other being in Salinas, California, United States.The founding of the sanctuary goes back to the Franciscan friar Bartolomeo de Ivrea who reputedly sighted an Marian apparition on 15 August 1480. The church interior is highly ornate and decorated, and a platform has panoramic views of the city. The sanctuary is linked to Locarno city centre by the Locarno–Madonna del Sasso funicular. On 14 August 1880, the Vatican Chapter under Pope Leo XIII issued a Pontifical decree which crowned the venerated image via the former Archbishop of Milan, Paolo Angelo Ballerini, following festivities of August 15–16, marking the 400 years of its Marian apparition.

The Specola Solare Ticinese is the oldest solar observatory in Locarno. The observatory was founded in 1957 during the International Geophysical Year and is located in Locarno-Monti at the site of the regional center of MeteoSwiss. It measures the sunspot relative number and was part of the Federal Observatory at ETH Zurich until 1980. Since then it has been operated by a private association and provides data to the Royal Observatory of Belgium, which is now responsible for the distribution of the sunspot relative number. It is largely financed by the Canton of Ticino through the lottery fund. As of May 2025, the Specola Solare Ticinese temporarily suspended its scientific outreach activities due to major building renovations. The renovation work is scheduled for completion summer 2026, at which point all activities are expected to resume.

Locarno railway station (Italian: Stazione di Locarno) serves the city of Locarno, in the canton of Ticino, Switzerland. However, the station is located within the adjacent municipality of Muralto, near the shore of Lake Maggiore. The border between the two municipalities runs along the Torrente Ramogna stream, a short distance to the south and west of the station. Since 1990, Locarno station has been divided into two distinct components, each served by a separately operated railway. At surface level, there is a standard gauge station, operated by the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). That station is the terminal of a branch line from Giubiasco on the Gotthard Railway. Underground, there is another terminal station, Locarno FART, for the metre gauge Domodossola–Locarno railway, an international rail link operated in Switzerland by the Regional Bus and Rail Company of Canton Ticino (Italian: Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi, or FART). Before the station was renovated into this form, the metre gauge trains operated from a separate platform on the station forecourt. As part of the reconstruction, the standard gauge station was augmented by a new finger platform between tracks two and three. Additionally, the two railway lines' goods yards were removed, and the underground station constructed in their place.

Locarno FART railway station (Italian: Stazione di Locarno FART) is a railway station that serves the city of Locarno, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. It is the Swiss terminus of the cross-border metre gauge railway line from Domodossola in Italy, which opened in 1923. Until 1990 these trains terminated in the forecourt of the mainline station, after passing through the streets of Locarno. This was replaced by a new underground station and section of line. Since 1990, the station has been located underneath and physically connected to Locarno station, the city's primary railway station, although they do not share any tracks. The station is the eastern terminus of the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) metre gauge Domodossola–Locarno line of the Regional Bus and Rail Company of Ticino (Italian: Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi, FART).
