Combs Moss

Lightwood Reservoir is an empty reservoir near the town of Buxton, Derbyshire, and associated wildlife reserve. Formerly operated by Severn Trent Water, the land is now owned by Nestlé and is the source of their Pure Life bottled water.

Corbar Hill is a sandstone hill at the south end of Combs Moss, overlooking Buxton in Derbyshire, in the Peak District. The summit (marked by a trig pillar) is 437 metres (1,434 ft) above sea level.The north west side of the hill (and most of Combs Moss and Black Edge) is designated as "open access" land for the public, following the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.Corbar Cross was a gift from the Duke of Devonshire to Buxton Catholics, who erected it at the summit in 1950 to mark the Holy Year declared by Pope Pius XII. The cross was painted pink as a prank in the 1990s. Protesters against Pope Benedict XVI's visit to the UK in 2010 cut down the cross. A replacement 6-metre-high (20 ft) solid oak cross was donated by a firm in Lancashire and installed in 2011. Corbar Woods is Buxton's oldest woodland and is included in Buxton's "The Park" conservation area. Its 54 acres are owned and managed by the Buxton Civic Association. The woods were used for coppicing trees in medieval times. There are remains of a white coal pit, which used dried coppice branches to generate the high temperatures needed to smelt lead. The 19th-century paths through the ancient woods, known as the Victorian Swiss Walks, were designed by Joseph Paxton (who also laid out the original Buxton Pavilion Gardens). These paths allowed visitors to the spa town to enjoy views over Buxton's fine buildings from the hilltop. The "Ring of Trees" waymarked walk around Buxton runs through Corbar Wood. The main tree species are beech, yew and oak. The woodland floor at the higher west end of the woods is covered with swathes of bluebells each May. The woods are habitat to common birds (such as thrushes, tits and finches) but are also home to nuthatches and woodpeckers. Corbar Hill House (on Corbar Road in Buxton) is a Grade II listed building. It was built in the 19th century in the style of a French château (with a mansard roof and fountain), apparently for the Ryder family. It later became John Duncan School, which closed in 2003. It has now been converted into private apartments. Corbar Hill Hydro was converted from the Clarendon guest house in the 1890s to offer hydropathic treatments. It was sold in the 1930s for nurses' accommodation.Nithen Quarry on Corbar Hill was used for many years as a source of high quality sandstone for the buildings of Buxton, including the town hall, which was built in the 1890s.

Cavendish Golf Club in Buxton, Derbyshire, opened in 1925 and was designed by Alister MacKenzie. The course is 5,721 yards (5,231 m) long with a par of 68. It is consistently voted as one of the top 100 golf courses in England. In 1923, Victor Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire, commissioned Dr Alister MacKenzie to create and build an 18-hole golf course on moorland owned by the Devonshire estate in Buxton. The course was open to men and women from its opening in 1925. The Cavendish was one of MacKenzie's last UK course designs. He went on to design courses in Australasia, South America and the USA, including the world-famous Augusta National golf course, which opened in 1932 and hosts The Masters annual major golf championship. The Cavendish course was bought by the members from the 11th Duke of Devonshire in 1955. Although the course is under 6,000 yards long, the design of the sloping greens is acknowledged as its main challenge. The course record of 61 is 7 under par.In the 1990s, many native deciduous trees were planted around the course, funded by grants from the Forestry Commission.Buxton and High Peak Golf Club was the first golf course in Buxton, founded in 1886 on Fairfield Common. In 1899, the Ladies Golf Club's nine hole course was set out on Temple Meads (which was developed as a housing estate in the 1960s). After the First World War, Canadian troops based in Buxton created a toboggan run across what would later be the first three fairways of the Cavendish course. The toboggan run is still marked on the OS Explorer Map OL24. The Peak District Boundary Walk runs across the golf course.

Cavendish Hospital is a geriatric healthcare facility in Manchester Road, Buxton, Derbyshire. It is managed by Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust.

Combs is a small village in Derbyshire, England, in the civil parish of Chapel-en-le-Frith and the Peak District National Park. The village is bounded to the east, west and south by gritstone edges and moorland, the highest of which is Black Edge (507 m (1,663 ft)). To the north the embankment of the Buxton to Stockport railway separates it from Combs Reservoir. To the east is Castle Naze, a prehistoric settlement site. The village has a pub, the Beehive Inn, and infant school.Combs resident Herbert Frood developed a vehicle brake pad and in 1897 founded the company Ferodo. The village was also home to journalists and authors Crichton Porteous and Peggy Bellhouse. Old Brook House and its barn, close to the Beehive public house, is a listed building. Parts of it dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, as does Marsh Hall closer to Chapel-en-le-frith.

Park Road is a cricket ground in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It is the home ground of Buxton Cricket Club, and was formerly used by the Derbyshire County Cricket Club first XI between 1923 and 1986. The first First-class match on the ground was in June 1923, when Derbyshire faced the touring West Indians. The ground’s biggest claim to fame was in 1975, when the second day’s play of the County Championship match against Lancashire was wiped out due to snow. Derbyshire generally played one County Championship match at Buxton every year from 1930 to 1976, but have only played there four times since. The most recent first-class match was in August 1986 against Lancashire, who have provided the opposition for 26 of the 48 first-class games at the ground. Black Edge is a summit, 507 metres (1,663 ft) high, on a sharp ridgeline above the village of Dove Holes in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District in the county of Derbyshire in England.

The Devonshire Royal Hospital was established as the Devonshire Hospital in 1859 in Buxton, Derbyshire by the Buxton Bath Charity for the treatment of the poor. The hospital was built in the converted stable block of The Crescent. The building is now known as the Devonshire Dome and it is the site of the Buxton Campus of the University of Derby.

The Devonshire Dome building (previously known as the Devonshire Royal Hospital) is a Grade II* listed 18th-century former stable block in Buxton, Derbyshire. It was built by John Carr of York and extended by architect Robert Rippon Duke, who added what was then the world's largest unsupported dome, with a diameter of 44.2 metres (145 ft). It is now the site of the Buxton Campus of the University of Derby.

Lismore Fields is the site of a Stone Age settlement in the town of Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It was discovered close to the River Wye in 1984 by the Trent and Peak Archaeological Trust during a search for a Roman road. The site is a protected Scheduled Monument. The first inhabitants of Buxton made their home at Lismore Fields 6,000 years ago. Excavation of the prehistoric settlement discovered the remains (floors, post holes and pits) of a Mesolithic timber roundhouse and of two Neolithic longhouses. The layout of these buildings can be clearly seen from the positions of the post holes. Flint implements were also found. Lismore Fields could be the earliest cereal cultivation site discovered in Britain. Cereal stores were revealed by the archeologists. Pollen analysis of soil samples and charred plant remains uncovered evidence of emmer wheat, crab apples, hazelnuts and flax. Researchers believe that this ancient site marks the period when Stone Age people developed from hunter-gatherers to farmers. The "Lismore Pot" is a 5,500 year-old Grimston-ware bowl, pieced together from pottery fragments, and is one of the oldest pots ever found in Britain. It is on display in the Buxton Museum.

The Pavilion Arts Centre was opened in 1889 as the new Entertainment Stage theatre on St John's Road in Buxton, Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Pavilion Gardens complex of buildings in the town's central Conservation Area. It has a main 360-seat theatre, and since 2017 it has been the home of Buxton Cinema.

St Thomas More Catholic Voluntary Academy is a co-educational Roman Catholic secondary school located in Buxton in the English county of Derbyshire. The school is named after Saint Thomas More, a sixteenth century elder statesman who was martyred for his refusal to accept King Henry VIII's claim to be the supreme head of the church. The school is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Nottingham. Previously a voluntary aided school administered by Derbyshire County Council, in September 2018 St Thomas More Catholic School converted to academy status leading to a name change. The school is now sponsored by the St Ralph Sherwin Catholic Multi Academy Trust. The Trust oversees twenty primary schools and five secondary schools across Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.St Thomas More Catholic Voluntary Academy educates pupils from all over High Peak, with some students travelling from Staffordshire and Cheshire to attend. The school offers GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for pupils.
