Total municipality population was in 2011 486 inhabitants. It belonged to a German language island. The German population was expelled in 1945.

The Volovec Mountains (Slovak: Volovské vrchy, pronounced [ˈʋɔlɔwskeː ˈʋr̩xi]) is a mountain range in eastern Slovakia, the largest range within the group of Slovak Ore Mountains, which is part of the Inner Western Carpathians. The range is about 70 kilometers by 30 kilometers, with ridges usually 800 to 1100 meters high. The highest peak is Zlatý stôl ("Golden Table"; 1322 meters). The range is almost completely forested, mostly with spruce and fir, and isolated stands of beech and oak. A large portion of the range is set aside as a bird sanctuary. The mountain range is the second largest range in Slovakia after the Tatra Mountains, but the third-largest range in the Carpathians. The range contains old mining towns such as Gelnica, Rudňany, and Smolník, where gold, silver, copper, mercury and iron were exploited.

It is one of several towns in Bodva Valley. Other towns in Bodva Valley include: Jasov, Lucia Bania, Vyšný Medzev (Upper Metzenseifen), and Stos. Historically, It belonged to one of the original mountain towns in the Lower Zips/Dolný Spis: Gelnica/Göllnitz, Smolník/Schmöllnitz, Nálepkovo/Wagendrüssel, Krompachy/Krompach, Mníšek nad Hnilcom/Einsiedel, Švedlár/Schwedler.

Zádielska tiesňava or Zádielska dolina, the Zadiel Canyon, is a mountain pass in the Slovak Karst in Slovakia.It is known as dolina v krase or valley in the karst. It was created by Chotárny stream. This stream creates small waterfalls. The Zádielska tiesňava was declared a national nature reserve in 1954 for its uniqueness. It is the deepest gorge in Slovakia and is oriented from north to south. At present, we know about 120 caves in the Zádielska tiesňava. The narrowest part of the gorge is a place only 10 m wide, which is called the Zádiel Gate.
