Gandhinagar district is an administrative division of Gujarat, India, whose headquarters are at Gandhinagar, the state capital. It was organized in 1964. Connected to Ahmedabad by the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway, and with Vadodara with the Ahmedabad-Vadodara highway, these three cities form the top population centres and commercial heart of Gujarat and western India. Because of the division of the old Mumbai State, the State of Gujarat was formed on 1 May 1960. Because of the development of the territory of Gujarat, the capital of the state was kept at Ahmedabad.
