Adamstown, New South Wales

Municipality of Adamstown was a Local Government Area of New South Wales from 1886 until 1938 when it became part of the City of Greater Newcastle. It was named after and comprised the township of Adamstown near Newcastle. The township had been established in 1869. The Municipalities Act of 1857 provided that an area could become a municipality if there was a petition of at least 50 people who would be ratepayers in the district. Most of the nearby towns had become municipalities in the 1870s and 209 people signed a petition for Adamstown that was published in March 1885. The main reason for becoming a municipality was for roads, drains and nightsoil collection. The major employer in town was coal mining. The municipality was proclaimed on 31 December 1885 and its main boundaries were Hamilton and Merewether to the east, while the railway formed the north western boundary separating it from New Lambton.The first council election was held on Saturday 6 March 1886, electing 9 aldermen to serve a 3 year term, including Alfred Edden, who was President of the Waratah colliery lodge. The aldermen unanimously elected Thomas Weir as the inaugural mayor of Adamstown.Women were not eligible to serve on the council until 1919, however no women were subsequently elected.There had been proposals to merge the "pocket-handkerchief municipalities" surrounding Newcastle since 1891, including the Greater Newcastle Royal Commission in 1919, however this did not eventuate until 1937 when the Greater Newcastle Act 1937 merged Adamstown and 9 other municipalities with City of Newcastle to create the City of Greater Newcastle. The date of the amalgamation was 2 April 1938.

Adamstown Rosebud Football Club (founded July 12, 1889) is a semi-professional soccer club based in Adamstown a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. The club is part of Northern NSW Football and has teams competing in Senior and Youth NPL competitions. The club had played in the National Soccer League between 1984 and 1986 as Newcastle Rosebud United. Adamstown Rosebud is arguably the most famous football club in Newcastle and in 2019, the club entered its 130th year of competition, making the Rosebuds the oldest NPL club in Australia. To mark the occasion, the club wore a special commemorative strip that year, honouring its 130-year history and the Australian representatives the club has produced.

Adamstown railway station is located on the Main Northern line in New South Wales, Australia. It serves the southern Newcastle suburb of Adamstown, and was opened on 15 August 1887.As part of the electrification of the line in the early 1980s, new station buildings were built, the western relief line and Platform 3 removed, and the 1939 built signal box on Platform 1 that used to control movements to the Belmont line decommissioned on 4 December 1983. Until December 1991, the Belmont line diverged to the south-east of the station. The station was upgraded with new lifts and footbridge with work completed by late 2017.In 2019, Platform 1 was extended to accommodate 10-cars.

Broadmeadow Locomotive Depot (NSW depot number 2) was a large locomotive depot consisting of two roundhouse buildings and associated facilities constructed by the New South Wales Government Railways adjacent to the marshalling yard on the Main Northern line at Broadmeadow. Construction of the locomotive depot at Broadmeadow commenced in 1923 to replace the existing crowded loco sheds at Woodville Junction at Hamilton, with the depot opening in March 1924. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999.

The Hunter School of the Performing Arts (abbreviated as HSPA) is a government-funded co-educational selective and specialist primary and secondary day school which offers a comprehensive curriculum with a performing arts specialty, located in Broadmeadow, in the Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1923, the school enrolled 1,150 students in 2018, from Year 3 to Year 12, of whom four percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eight percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is now Tracey Breese as of Term 2 2021. The school is unique in terms of public selective schools to cater to both primary and secondary school students. Enrolment is by audition online and/or on-site.

Merewether High School (abbreviated as MHS) is a government-funded co-educational academically selective secondary day school, located in the suburb of Broadmeadow in the city of Newcastle, in the Lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia. It was established in 1977 following the merger of Newcastle Technical High School and Cooks Hill Girls High School. The school is named in honour of Edward Christopher Merewether, a prominent businessman and civil servant in the Colony of New South Wales who later became the Superintendent of the Australian Agricultural Company in Newcastle. The school enrolled approximately 1,070 students in 2020, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom two percent identified as Indigenous Australians and 25 percent were from a language background other than English. The school caters for students from a wide area within the Greater Hunter Region. The school is operated by the NSW Department of Education; the principal is Rochelle Dooley.Merewether High students have consistently achieved some of the highest results in the Higher School Certificate, outperforming other schools in the Greater Hunter Region, with many students achieving state rankings in select courses.

The Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium, also known as the Newcastle Basketball Stadium, is an indoor basketball stadium located in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia and was the original home of the Newcastle Falcons of the National Basketball League from the origin of the league in 1979 until they moved to the newly built Newcastle Entertainment Centre in 1992. The stadium is currently the home of the Newcastle Basketball Association and can hold approximately 2,200 spectators. On 18 July 1982, the stadium hosted the 1982 NBL Grand Final where the West Adelaide Bearcats defeated the Geelong Supercats 80–74. The staging of an NBL game in Newcastle without the Falcons playing was possible due to the NBL's original policy of awarding the then single game Grand Final to a pre-determined venue regardless of the teams playing. The stadium also hosted the 1982 semi-finals with West Adelaide defeating the Coburg Giants 94–74 and Geelong defeating the Nunawading Spectres 101–59. Both semi-final games were played on 16 July. The Stadium later hosted the 2006 ABA National Finals. On 15 August 2015, the Stadium hosted the LSU Tigers college basketball team in an exhibition game against the Newcastle All-Stars, which LSU won 89–75. A capacity crowd of almost 2,000, the biggest for a game at the Broadmeadow venue in more than 25 years, packed in to see the NBA-bound forward Ben Simmons compete for his new college team. A former Hunters junior, Simmons learnt to play basketball at Broadmeadow when his father, Dave, played and coached in Newcastle for the Falcons and the Hunter Pirates.

Broadmeadow railway station is a major regional interchange located on the Main North Line. The station itself serves the Newcastle suburb of Broadmeadow. The station was first opened on 15 August 1887. The island platform was accessed by a level crossing at the station's northern end until replaced by an underpass on 2 March 1973 opened by Minister for Transport Milton Morris. The station was upgraded to wheelchair accessibility in July 2017.Following the electrification of the line from Wyong in June 1984, passenger trains including the Brisbane Limited, Gold Coast Motorail, Grafton Express, North Coast Daylight Express, North Coast Overnight Express, Northern Mail and Northern Tablelands Express changed from electric to diesel traction at Broadmeadow.

Broadmeadow Magic Football Club is a soccer club based in Broadmeadow a suburb of Newcastle, Australia. The club currently competes in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW.

Newcastle Olympic Football Club is a semi-professional association football club based in Hamilton a suburb of Newcastle, New South Wales. They currently compete in the National Premier Leagues Northern NSW, the second tier of football in Australia. They were known as Hamilton Olympic between 1992 and 2019.

Newcastle International Sports Centre, known as McDonald Jones Stadium for sponsorship reasons, is a multi-purpose sports stadium located in Newcastle, Australia. The ground is home to the Newcastle Knights (National Rugby League) and Newcastle Jets FC (A-League). It is owned by the New South Wales Government and is administered by Venues NSW (which consolidates the operations and responsibilities of the former Hunter Region Sporting Venues Authority and other regional sporting venues authorities into one authority managed by one governing board). Due to past sponsorship deals, the ground has been previously known as Marathon Stadium, EnergyAustralia Stadium, Ausgrid Stadium and Hunter Stadium. Newcastle International Sports Centre is also known as Newcastle Stadium when in use during AFC competitions due to conflicting sponsorship reasons.

Broadmeadow Racecourse is an Australian racecourse for horse racing in the Newcastle suburb of Broadmeadow. It was opened on 27 April 1907 by the Newcastle Jockey Club on land acquired from the Australian Agricultural Company. It replaced a racecourse at Hamilton.Notable races held at Broadmeadow are the Cameron Handicap, Newcastle Gold Cup, Newcastle Newmarket Handicap, Spring Stakes and Tibbie Stakes.
