Espanola Schoolhouse

Espanola is an unincorporated community in Flagler County, Florida, United States. It is located at the intersection of Old Brick Road, County Road 13, and County Road 205. It is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area.

Flagler County is a county located in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2020 census, the population was 115,378. Its county seat is Bunnell, and the largest city is Palm Coast. Created in 1917 from portions of Saint Johns and Volusia Counties, it was named for Henry Flagler, who built the Florida East Coast Railway. Flagler County is included in the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area, and is also included in the Orlando–Deltona–Daytona Beach, FL Combined Statistical Area.

WNZF (1550 kHz) is a commercial AM radio station, licensed to Bunnell, Florida, the county seat of Flagler County in Northeast Florida. The call sign stands for "News Flagler". WNZF is licensed to Flagler County Broadcasting, LLC, which is owned by James Martin, Gary Smithwick, David Ayres, and Tricia Woods. Martin has owned and operated more than 20 radio stations. Smithwick is a Washington, D.C. communications attorney who has participated in ownership of five radio stations in Florida with Martin. Smithwick was also president and part owner of a television station. WNZF has its transmitter off North Bay Street in Bunnell. It transmits 5,500 watts by day, but because AM 1550 is a clear channel frequency, WNZF must reduce power at night to 57 watts, to avoid interfering with other stations. WNZF is also heard on an FM translator, W235CW at 94.9 MHz.

WBHQ (92.7 FM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Beverly Beach, Florida, and serving Flagler County. It is owned by Flagler County Broadcasting and broadcasts an adult hits radio format known as "Beach 92.7". Unlike other adult hits stations that mainly play classic rock and classic alternative rock hits of the 1980s and 1990s, WBHQ includes a good deal of the pop hits in its playlist. Like most adult hits stations, it uses no disc jockeys, but it does not have a voice making sarcastic or ironic quips, as heard on Jack FM and Bob FM stations. It was assigned the WBHQ call sign by the Federal Communications Commission on February 20, 2009.WBHQ has an effective radiated power (ERP) of 5,500 watts. WBHQ broadcasts using HD Radio technology. Its HD2 digital subchannel simulcasts the talk radio format of sister station WNZF (1550 AM_. The HD3 subchannel has an oldies format known as "Kool 100.9". That subchannel feeds FM translator W265CF at 100.9 MHz in Palm Coast.

The Vocational Agriculture Building (also known as the Little Red School House) was built by the Works Projects Administration (WPA) in 1938 with funding from the Flagler County Board of Public Instruction and the WPA. It is located at 1001 E. Howe St., Bunnell, Florida, United States. Interestingly, it never served as a schoolhouse as it was used as Bunnell High School's vocational agriculture department and housed the local chapter of the Future Farmers of America, which is now known as the National FFA Organization. The building is also often mistaken for a one-room schoolhouse, but it actually has two large rooms and a smaller storage room. This building is one of only three structures built in Flagler County during the Great Depression with funding provided by New Deal dollars. The other two are the Bunnell Coquina City Hall and the Flagler County Jail (WPA-Built).On February 21, 2007, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Bunnell is the county seat of Flagler County Florida, United States, with a population of 3,276 at the 2020 census. The city is part of the Deltona–Daytona Beach–Ormond Beach, FL metropolitan statistical area and is named after an early resident, Alvah A. Bunnell, a shingle maker and supplier of wood to the area's fledgling rail industry.

The Old Bunnell State Bank Building (also known as the Citizens Bank of Bunnell) is a historic site in Bunnell, Florida, located between 101 through 107 North Bay Street. On June 25, 1992, it was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places. The Bunnell State Bank was incorporated in 1910 and moved into this building in 1917. The two-story structure is built in the Masonry Vernacular style, with decorative brickwork on the north side. The interior is paneled with wood. This was the only bank in Flagler County from 1917 until 1932, and again from 1938 to 1942.

Towering over the City of Bunnell is the city's most visible and iconic landmark: the City of Bunnell elevated steel water tower. The water tower is located at 100 Utility Street, Bunnell, FL 32110. It was built in 1926 by Chicago Bridge & Iron Company as part of a new waterworks system for Bunnell that went into operation in December 1927 and has been providing water to residents and local businesses to this day. The water tower is 110 feet high and its elevated steel tank holds 75,000 gallons of water. The elevated steel water tank has a conical top, Horton hemispherical bottom and is supported by four steel columns (legs) and reinforced with steel cross braces. The east and west sides of the elevated tank have black painted signage that read “City of Bunnell, Crossroads of Flagler County”

The Holden House, located at 204 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell, Florida, was built in 1918 by Samuel Merwin Bortree (1859–1918) as a wedding gift for his daughter Ethel Lura Bortree Holden (1892–1977), and her husband Thomas Edward Holden (1892–1974). It is an excellent example of the Craftsman Bungalow architectural style. The house was purchased by Flagler County for $40,000 on August 6, 1979 from a Holden family member. It is now a museum that features artifacts from Flagler County and the general Florida area dating from the St. Johns Culture (500 BCE) to the present. It is also the headquarters for the Flagler County Historical Society. The house's upstairs bathroom was one of the first indoor bathrooms in the Bunnell area and features unique small hexagon tiles on the floor which were similar to the flooring design used in the original owner's pharmacy building (Holden's Pharmacy) which is no longer extant and was located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Moody Boulevard and U.S. 1 in Bunnell. The Holden House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on October 16, 2018 (Reference Number: SG100003020).

The Bunnell Coquina City Hall (also known as the Bunnell Civic Center and the Bunnell City Hall) is a unique one-story public building constructed of locally quarried coquina stone. The property is located at 200 South Church Street, Bunnell, FL 32110 in the downtown section of the city. It includes man-made Lake Lucille with its jetting fountain in the front of the building, which creates an impressive visual appeal to the setting of the property. It was built in 1936–1937 with grant funding from the Work Progress Administration (WPA).The Bunnell Coquina City Hall building is an important part of Bunnell's local history as it provided a community meeting, library and recreation facility to the area during intense economic turmoil which could not have been possible without New Deal funding. Furthermore, it was instrumental in providing employment for unemployed locals during the Great Depression which assisted the local economy.

During the 1930s, the Flagler County, Florida Jail (also known locally as the "Stockade") was in dire need of repairs and enlargement. Flagler County Commissioners were under pressure from local citizens and grand juries to repair the building or erect a new one. After months of negotiations, during 1938, between the Flagler County Board of Commissioners and the Works Progress Administration WPA an agreement to build a new Flagler County Jail building was approved. A WPA Project, No. 4242, was approved that cost approximately $24,000 ($498,950 in 2022 dollars). It was agreed that the costs would be divided between Flagler County and the WPA. Construction of the new Flagler County Jail started January 25, 1939 under the management of Z. D. Holland, WPA Supervisor and well known local contractor. It was built on 2.04 acres of county-owned property located at 1600 Old Moody Blvd., Bunnell, FL.The construction project took a little over one year to complete as it was finished in early February 1940. The WPA, represented by Z. D. Holland, officially transferred sole responsibility of the finished building to the Flagler County government on February 2, 1940. Flagler County Commissioners promptly turned the keys to the building over to Flagler County Sheriff Ernest Walton “E.W.” Johnston who moved the county’s sheriff department into the new building and officially opened the jail.

George Washington Carver High School was built in 1949 on 12 acres of land along Drain Street in Bunnell, Flagler County, Florida. It was a racially segregated public black-only high school during the Jim Crow era, and was in operation from 1949 to 1967.
