Magham Down Manor House

Magham Down is a village between Herstmonceux and Hailsham in the Wealden district of East Sussex. It lies on the A271 road. It has a Grade II listed building, Magham Down Manor House. Historically, Magham Down was at the point to the east of the market town of Hailsham where the road forked, one route heading towards Battle and Hastings, the other leading towards Herstmonceux castle. In the eighteenth century the roads at Magham Down were remodelled with a new road cut to provide a more direct route towards Battle. The cut became known as New Road while the original route became Old Road. The road towards Herstmonceux castle remains as Under Road. Most of the dwellings in Magham Down are along Old Road and Squab Lane but the small commercial area was located where the two eastward roads forked where there was once a blacksmith's forge. In the twentieth century Magham Down reached its commercial peak, still small, but it did include a motor garage, the Red Lion pub, a guest house and a village shop and post office. In due course the garage and the Guest House became the Old Forge Hotel but by the end of the century the Red Lion pub and the village shop had closed.

Buckwell Place was the childhood home of the travel-writer and raconteur Augustus Hare, and his uncle, the theologian Julius Charles Hare, who entertained a number of "eminent victorians", namely Thomas Carlyle.

The river acts as a drainage basin for several smaller ditches, including streams from Puckeridge Stream.

The Hellingly Hospital Railway was a light railway owned and operated by East Sussex County Council, used for transporting coal and passengers to Hellingly Hospital, a psychiatric hospital near Hailsham, from the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway's Cuckoo Line at Hellingly railway station. The railway was constructed in 1899 and opened to passengers on 20 July 1903, following its electrification in 1902. After the railway grouping of 1923, passenger numbers declined so significantly that the hospital authorities no longer considered passenger usage of the line to be economical, and that service was withdrawn in 1931. The railway closed to freight in 1959, following the hospital's decision to convert its coal boilers to oil, which rendered the railway unnecessary. The route took a mostly direct path from a junction immediately south of Hellingly Station, past Farm and Park House Sidings, stopping places to load and unload produce and supplies from outbuildings of the hospital. Much of the railway has been converted to footpath, and many of the buildings formerly served by the line are now abandoned.

Lewens Sewer is a minor, 1.1-kilometre (0.68 mi) long stream (brook) and drainage ditch of the Pevensey Levels in Hailsham, Wealden District of East Sussex, England, that is a tributary to Horse Eye Sewer. Flowing northeasterly throughout its entire course, Lewens Sewer rises at the confluence of Crossing Sewer and White Dyke Sewer near the White Dyke Marsh marshland. It has two left tributaries that drain water from an unnamed ditch draining Horse Eye Sewer, and two right tributaries that direct water into White Dyke Sewer.
