River Nith

Abbey Vale Football Club are a football club based in the village of New Abbey in the historical county of Kirkcudbright shire in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland. They started life as an amateur side called Lochvale F.C. in 1971, but as more players joined from the village, the committee decided to change their name and move to New Abbey in 1974. However, to maintain their place in the Dumfries Amateur League, the new side had to maintain the "Vale" in their title, hence the new club became known as Abbey Vale F.C.In 2001, the club took a step up in competition and joined the South of Scotland Football League. Their highest league position to date is third, achieved in the 2005–06 and 2021–22 seasons. They play their home matches at Maryfield Park, which despite being a fairly undeveloped ground, accommodates up to 1,000 spectators. The changing rooms are named "The David Neil Pavilion", in memory of one of the founder players who died young. The club's home strip is a yellow and black hooped shirt with black shorts. Their current manager is Frazer Brolls, long term servant of the club, assisted by Alan Clarke who is player/joint manager.

The Abbey of Dulce Cor, better known as Sweetheart Abbey (Gaelic: An Abaid Ur), was a Cistercian monastery founded in 1275 in what is now the village of New Abbey, in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway, 8 miles (13 km) south of Dumfries.

Glencaple is a small settlement in the Dumfries and Galloway area of Scotland. Situated on the banks of the River Nith, it once served as a port for nearby Dumfries. Glencaple is a Gaelic name meaning 'horse valley' from the words gleann 'narrow valley' and capall 'horse, mare'.

New Abbey (Scottish Gaelic: An Abaid Ùr) is a village in the historical county of Kirkcudbrightshire in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. It is 6 miles (10 km) south of Dumfries. The summit of the prominent hill Criffel is 2.5 miles (4.0 km) to the south.

The National Museum of Costume was located at Shambellie House, in New Abbey, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland and it formed part of the National Museums of Scotland. The museum started operating in 1982. The museum allowed a look at fashion and the lifestyle of the wealthy from the 1850s to the 1950s. The clothes were presented in lifelike room settings. In January 2013, National Museums Scotland announced that the National Museum of Costume was to close and the site would not reopen for 2013.

St Queran's Well is a holy well in Dumfries and Galloway, located in the parish of Troqueer in the historic county of Kirkcudbrightshire. A spring feeds a 3 ft wide concrete pool which is surrounded by a ring of stones 10 ft in diameter. In 1892 it was reported that coins and pins were left in the well and ribbons tied to the surrounding bushes as offerings. The well was cleaned out in c. 1870 and hundreds of coins were found, the earliest of which dated back to 1560. Ribbons and other offerings are still left around the well today. The well was recorded as St Jardan's well in 1847 in the Ordnance Survey Name Book. It was known as St Jargan's Well in the first half of the seventeenth century.

Dumfries and Galloway College is a further education college in Dumfries and Galloway, with campuses in Dumfries and Stranraer. Founded in 1961, the college has flourished to become a leading voice in green energy skills development to help tackle climate change and one of the main providers of learning and training across the South of Scotland. The college offers programmes ranging from senior-phase school partnerships to higher education, with a range of courses, including business, computing, care, childcare, construction, creative industries, education, engineering, hairdressing, beauty and complementary therapies, health and social studies, hospitality and sports and recreation. In 2008 their campus moved from Heathhall to its new main campus on the Crichton Estate, sitting nearby the University of Glasgow's and the University of the West of Scotland's satellite faculties in Dumfries. The college was recognised at the 2021 Green Gown Awards, winning the accolade of the UK and Ireland's Sustainability Institution of the Year award for 2020 and it regularly boasts of high student satisfaction rates - 97% among further education students and 94% among higher education students in the most recent 2018-19 Student Satisfaction and Engagement survey conducted by the Scottish Funding Council. This places Dumfries and Galloway College in the top 5 institutions in Scotland for student satisfaction.

Mabie is a collection of mountain biking routes located in Dumfries and Galloway, southwest Scotland. The mountain bike routes are part of the 7Stanes project by Forestry and Land Scotland throughout the Scottish Borders and Dumfries and Galloway. The area has two loops for less experienced riders; the green graded 'Big Views' trail and the blue graded 'Woodhead' route. The 'Phoenix' trail is for the more experienced rider. The 17km long red graded route consists of technical sections, fast flowing sections and jumps built on singletrack through mixed woodland. There is also a black trail named the Kona Darkside. at 3.8km it is mainly in the style of 'North Shore' with raised wooden trails over outcrops of granite.

Pict's Knowe (grid reference NX 9538 7213) is a henge monument in the parish of Troqueer, Dumfries and Galloway. It is one of a small group of henge monuments around Dumfries which includes Broadlea henge near Annan. Pict's Knowe is located 4 km SW of Dumfries on a small sandy bank in the peat covered valley of the Crooks Pow stream.The site has been badly damaged by livestock, rabbit burrowing and tree rooting. The area around the monument had been occupied since the early Neolithic, but the henge itself appears to date to the early Bronze Age, based on radiocarbon analysis.The monument has one entrance, making it a Class I henge. It enclosed an area of 20-25m in diameter. In the entrance to the henge, sherds of a carinated urn were found, and fragments of cremated bone, which may have been animal rather than human.During the Iron Age the henge's bank was added to and the ditch recut, with a timber platform built over it.The site was scheduled in 1928 as a prehistoric fort. Richard Bradley identified the monument as a henge in 1990. Although the site had been recognised as a henge some decades before, this information did not make its way into official records, and Pict's Knowe was classed as an 'earthwork' by the National Monuments Record of Scotland. The site was excavated by Julian Thomas between 1994 and 1998.

The Crichton is an institutional campus in Dumfries in southwest Scotland. It serves as a remote campus for the University of Glasgow, the University of the West of Scotland, Dumfries and Galloway College, and the Open University. The site also includes a hotel and conference centre, and Crichton Memorial Church, set in a 100-acre (40 ha) park. The campus was established in the 19th century as the Crichton Royal Hospital, a psychiatric hospital.

Midpark Hospital is a modern acute mental health unit located in Dumfries. The hospital is managed by NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Dumfries Castle was a royal castle that was located in Dumfries, Scotland. It was sited by the River Nith, in the area now known as Castledykes Park.A motte and bailey castle was built in the 12th century. The town was created a royal burgh by King William the Lion in 1186. The castle was enlarged and rebuilt in stone in 1214. King Alexander III of Scotland visited the castle in 1264 to plan an expedition against the Isle of Man. Robert de Brus, 5th Lord of Annandale captured the castle in 1286. The castle was occupied by the English from 1298. King Edward I of England stayed at the castle in 1300. Robert de Brus captured the castle briefly in 1306 from the English-appointed constable Richard Siward. King Robert I of Scotland captured the castle on 7 February 1313 from the English appointed constable, his enemy Dungal Macdouall, who had turned King Robert's brothers, Thomas and Alexander, over to Edward I, who promptly executed them. According to the RCAHMS there is "a strong belief" that it was destroyed after the capture and never rebuilt.
