The First Battle of Canton (Chinese: 第一次廣州之戰) was fought between British and Chinese forces in Canton, Guangdong Province, China, on 18 March 1841 during the First Opium War. The capture led to the hoisting of the Union Jack on the British factory in Canton and the resumption of trade between the British and the Chinese.

Huangsha Station (simplified Chinese: 黄沙站; traditional Chinese: 黃沙站; Jyutping: wong2 saa1 zaam6; Cantonese Yale: Wóngsā Jaahm) is a station on Line 1 of the Guangzhou Metro and was the first Line 1 station to have platform screen doors installed. It started operations on 28 June 1997. It was the terminus of Line 1 when the Guangzhou Metro started the service in 1997. It is situated under the junction of Datong Road (Chinese: 大同路) and Liu'ersan Road (六二三路) in the Liwan District of Guangzhou. It is near Shamian Island, where the White Swan Hotel and many Western style buildings are. It became an interchange station between Line 1 and Line 6 of the Guangzhou Metro in 2013.

Shamian (also romanized as Shameen or Shamin, both from its Cantonese pronunciation) is a sandbank island in the Liwan District of Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. The island's name literally means "sandy surface" in Chinese. The territory was divided into two concessions given to France and the United Kingdom by the Qing government in the 19th century (1859 to 1943). The island is a gazetted historical area that serves as a tranquil reminder of the colonial European period, with quiet pedestrian avenues flanked by trees and lined by historical buildings in various states of upkeep. The island is the location of several hotels, a youth hostel, restaurants and tourist shops selling curios and souvenirs.

Renmin Bridge (Chinese: 人民桥; pinyin: Rénmín Qiáo, literally “People’s Bridge”) is a bridge crossing the Pearl River in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.On its north is 623 Rd (六二三路) Renmin Bridge connects Haizhu District with Liwan District, and was the second highway bridge to be put into service in Guangzhou (after Haizhu Bridge) when it was completed in 1967. Guangzhou's Inner Ring Road passes over the bridge, making it a major traffic artery in the city.Guangzhou's annual Dragon Boat Race takes place between Renmin Bridge and Jiefang Bridge.Scenic Shamian Island lies directly upstream (east) of the bridge.

The White Swan Hotel (simplified Chinese: 白天鹅宾馆; traditional Chinese: 白天鵝賓館; pinyin: báitiān'é bīnguǎn; Jyutping: baak6 tin1 ngo4 ban1 gun2) is a 28-story luxury hotel in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China, located on Shamian Island, overlooking the Pearl River and facing the White Swan Pool. The hotel is reached by its own private 635 metres (2,083 ft) causeway.

Xiguan Creek (Chinese: 西关涌; pinyin: Xiguān chōng; Jyutping: Sai1gwaan1 cung1) is a former river located in Xiguan, Guangzhou, China. It was about 5 kilometres (3 mi) long and divided into two branches: the Upper Xiguan Creek and the Lower Xiguan Creek. Because of urban development, the waterway has been converted into culverts. During the reign of the Ming Dynasty Wanli Emperor (1572–1620), ships could sail along Xiguan Creek up to the Qingyun Bridge, which is today's Qingyun Li, Taoshadang, and Wanzhong Li. Since the time of the Qing Dynasty, Daguan River, which is connected to Xiguan Creek, has silted up as far as Guilan (called Ruixing Li today). In 1810, Qingyun Li, Taoshadang, and Wanzhong Li were reclaimed. Daguan River ends at 14-Pu Pier, at today's Tu Di Gong Temple in Ruixing Li. According to Nanhaixian Zhi (1872), Ruixing Li had become land by siltation, and Daguan River reached only to Guangya Li. By 1954 only the waterway to the west of Niuru Bridge remained.

Shamian Christian Church (Chinese: 沙面基督教堂; pinyin: Shmian Jīdūjiàotáng) is a Protestant church located in Shamian, Liwan District of Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Cultural Park station (simplified Chinese: 文化公园站; traditional Chinese: 文化公園站; pinyin: Wénhuà Gōngyuán zhàn) is an interchange station between Line 6 and Line 8 of the Guangzhou Metro. It is located underground in the Liwan District and started operation on 28 December 2013.

Tongfuxi Station (Chinese: 同福西站; pinyin: Tóngfúxī Zhàn; lit. 'Tongfu West station') is a station on Line 8 of the Guangzhou Metro, between Cultural Park station and Fenghuang Xincun station. It is located underground in the Haizhu District and started operation on 28 December 2019.

Julong Station (Chinese: 聚龙站; pinyin: Jùlóng Zhàn) is a station of Line 8 of the Guangzhou Metro. It is located underground in the Liwan District and started operation on 26 November 2020. The station has an underground island platform. Platform 1 is for trains towards Jiaoxin, whilst platform 2 is for trains towards Wanshengwei. There are 3 exits, lettered A, B and D. Exits A & B are accessible. Exit A is located on Dekang Road, B & D are on Shicha Road.

Liwan District is one of 11 urban districts of the prefecture-level city of Guangzhou, the capital of Guangdong Province, China. The district is split into two parts by the Pearl River: Xiguan in the northeast and Fangcun in the southwest.
