Altena, North Brabant

Altena Castle is a former castle in Almkerk. It was home to the lords of Altena, and often of the lords of Horne and Altena.

The Land of Heusden and Altena (Dutch: Land van Heusden en Altena) is a region located in the Dutch province of North Brabant. In 1904 it consisted of the historical regions Land van Altena and Land van Heusden (only the part above the Bergse Maas). Historically this region has been a part of North Brabant since 1815. During the Dutch Republic it belonged to Holland. It resembles comparable landscapes in the latter one, like e.g. the Alblasserwaard, which is situated just north of the region. The Land of Heusden and Altena lies on a river island in the estuary of the rivers Rhine and Meuse. It is enclosed by the rivers Boven Merwede (north), Afgedamde Maas (east) and Oude Maasje/Bergse Maas (south), and by the region of De Biesbosch, including De Biesbosch National Park (west). The Land van Heusden en Altena coincides with the municipality of Altena, except for the most western part, which belongs to De Biesbosch. Werkendam is the largest town, and Woudrichem the historical centre of the island. The former municipalities of Werkendam and Woudrichem formed the region of the Land van Altena, while the former municipality of Aalburg formed the region of the Land van Heusden. Unlike most parts of North Brabant, the Land of Heusden and Altena has a strong Protestant (Calvinist) character. Former Prime Minister Hendrikus Colijn (1869–1944) had his roots in this region.

Heikant is a hamlet in the municipality of Bladel, in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located about 3 km east of Hoogeloon.Heikant is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Hoogeloon. It has no place name signs and consists of a handful of houses.

Emmikhoven is a former village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It was located just south of Almkerk, on the other side of the small river Alm, and is now a part of that village. Emmikhoven and nearby Waardhuizen formed a separate municipality until 1879, under the name Emmikhoven en Waardhuizen or Emmikhoven c.a., when it was merged with Almkerk.

Dussen is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is a part of the municipality of Altena, and is located about 12 km south of Gorinchem. Dussen Castle is located near the village.

Waardhuizen is a village in the municipality of Altena, in the province of North Brabant, Netherlands. It is about 4 km (2.5 mi) south of Woudrichem, as well as just south of Uitwijk. As of 2020, Waardhuizen had a population of 275.

Uitwijk is a village in the municipality of Altena, in the Netherlands. It is located about 3 km south of Woudrichem, and just north of Waardhuizen. As of 2021, Uitwijk had 340 inhabitants.

't Zand is a hamlet in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is located in the municipality of Altena, on the southeastern edge of the village of Sleeuwijk. 't Zand is not a statistical entity, and the postal authorities have placed it under Sleeuwijk. It consists of about 40 houses. It was first mentioned in 1980 as 't Zand, and means sand.

Nieuwendijk is a village in the Dutch province of North Brabant. It is a part of the municipality of Altena, and lies about 8 km south of Gorinchem.

The Land of Altena (Dutch: Land van Altena) is a historical region and former fiefdom of the Lords of Altena, historically part of the County of Holland, but since 1815 located in the Dutch province of North Brabant. Since 1904 it is united with the Land of Heusden (only the part above the Bergse Maas) as the Land of Heusden and Altena. Unlike most parts of North Brabant the Land of Altena has a strong Protestant (Calvinist) character. Former Prime Minister Hendrikus Colijn (1869–1944) had his roots in this region.
