Lingwood

Lingwood railway station is on the Wherry Lines in the east of England, serving the village of Lingwood, Norfolk. It is 7 miles 78 chains (12.8 km) down the line from Norwich on the route to Great Yarmouth and is situated between Brundall and Acle. Its three-letter station code is LGD. It is managed by Greater Anglia, which operates all trains serving the station.[1]The station dates back to 1882, when it was built by the Great Eastern Railway to serve the village of Lingwood. At this time agriculture was thriving in the village and surrounding areas, so much so that over £1,000 was spent on a large warehouse next to the station. This was served by sidings, a second platform and a goods yard. Much of this still exists to this day although is not publicly accessible. The station building fell out of use 1965 during the Beeching cuts. After this it was used as a dress shop, and then a doctor's surgery, before being left derelict for several years in the early 1980s. It was then bought from British Rail in 1989 by the current owners, and was completely renovated. Many of the original features were retained, and it was opened as a Bed & Breakfast in 1990, which it remains.

Lingwood and Burlingham is a civil parish in the English county of Norfolk, comprising the large village of Lingwood together with the smaller villages of Burlingham Green, North Burlingham and South Burlingham. The villages are all within 4 kilometres (2.5 mi) of each other, some 15 kilometres (9.3 mi) equidistant from the town of Great Yarmouth and the city of Norwich.Burlingham House is a Georgian Grade II listed manor house, the former seat of the Jary family, and is now a care home. Burlingham Hall (now demolished) was the seat of the Burroughes family, bought with 3500 acres in 1919 by Norfolk County Council as part of its farming estate. The civil parish was created in 1935, by the merger of the ancient parishes of Lingwood, Burlingham St Andrew, Burlingham St Edmond and Burlingham St Peter. It has an area of 9.39 square kilometres (3.63 sq mi) and in the 2001 census had a population of 2,504 in 1,047 households, increasing to a population of 2,643 in 1,131 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, the parish falls within the district of Broadland.Lingwood is served by Lingwood railway station on the Norwich-Great Yarmouth Wherry Line. The name Lingwood originates from "Lingwoode", the first name given to the area, meaning "slope of a wood". The village was first noted in 1190. The name Burlingham means 'Homestead/village of Baerla's/Byrla's people'. The exact form of the personal name is uncertain.

Strumpshaw is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It is located on the northern bank of the River Yare around 6 miles (9.7 km) south-east of Norwich. The parish covers an area of 11.69 km2 (4.51 sq mi) and had a population of 602 in 245 households at the 2001 census, increasing to a population of 634 in 261 households at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it falls within the district of Broadland. The villages name means 'stump wood'. The village lies a little distance from the river, on the slopes of Strumpshaw Hill, the highest area of land in the Norfolk Broads. Because of its elevation, Strumpshaw hosted, from the late 1790s through to the mid-1810s, a repeater station in the shutter telegraph chain linking the Admiralty in London with Great Yarmouth. The Wherry Lines railway line running between Norwich and Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft runs through the parish. Trains call at Buckenham railway station at weekends only. The small villages of Buckenham and Hassingham, formally both parishes in their own right, lie within the civil parish of Strumpshaw.

St Nicholas Church is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Buckenham, Norfolk, England. It is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. The church stands among fields to the north of the River Yare.

Hassingham is a village in the civil parish of Strumpshaw, in the Broadland district, in the county of Norfolk, England, about ten miles east of Norwich. In 1931 the parish had a population of 114. On 1 April 1935 the parish was abolished and merged with Strumpshaw.The villages name means 'Homestead/village of Hasu's people'.Its church, St Mary, is one of 124 existing round-tower churches in Norfolk. The best-known former incumbent of Hassingham is the Rev. William Haslam, a nineteenth-Century evangelical, better known as the Vicar who was converted by his own sermon. Haslam held the living, together with that of nearby Buckenham from 1863 to 1871, having been presented to the living by Sir Thomas Beauchamp of Langley Hall. During Haslam's ministry in Hassingham, it was said that most of the population of this small village professed evangelical conversion. Haslam was supported by his wife and the preacher Catherine Hooper who they had met in Bath.

Beighton is a village and civil parish in the Broadland district of Norfolk, England, about two miles (3 km) South-West of Acle about 12.8 miles (20.6 km) to Norwich. It covers an area of 7.63 km2 (2.95 sq mil) and has a population of 436 in 185 households according to the 2011 census. Today, Beighton incorporates the old parish of Moulton St Mary, and both parishes are mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The All Saints church is situated within Beighton, along Church Hill. The church was described in 1870 as: The church is decorated English, and was recently restored.

Buckenham Marshes RSPB reserve is a nature reserve located on the northern bank of the River Yare in the English county of Norfolk. The reserve is located around 8 miles (13 km) south-east of Norwich near the village of Buckenham. The site, which is in The Broads, is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. The reserve consists of areas of reedbeds, grazing marsh and wet woodlands featuring species such as alder and willow. Areas of open water provide additional habitats. Key bird species include bean geese which over-winter at the site, the only location they regularly do so in England, lapwing and wigeon. An established rookery borders the site with up to 80,000 rooks roosting at the site, the largest rookery in Britain.The RSPB Strumpshaw Fen reserve borders Buckenham Marshes to the west. Both reserves lie within the Mid-Yare National Nature Reserve and form part of the Yare Broads and Marshes Site of Special Scientific Interest. The reserve is adjacent to Buckenham railway station with the Wherry Lines railway line marking its northern boundary.

The Strumpshaw Hall Steam Museum in Strumpshaw, Norfolk, is home to a collection of traction engines, steam rollers, a showman's engine and a steam wagon which are run on special occasions and on the last Sunday of each month from April to October.The Hall itself is Grade II listed, and in the grounds are a touring caravan site. Neighbouring the hall and farm estate is the Strumpshaw Fen RSPB reserve.

Buckenham railway station is on the Wherry Lines in the east of England, serving the village of Buckenham in Norfolk. It is 7 miles 62 chains (12.5 km) down the line from Norwich on the routes to Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth and is situated between Brundall and Cantley. Its three-letter station code is BUC. The station was opened in 1844. Today it is managed by Greater Anglia. According to usage estimates, Buckenham is one of the least-used stations in the country, registering just 216 passenger entries/exits in 2018/19. A limited number of services stop at the station. The station buildings are currently used as a recording studio.RSPB Buckenham Marshes is located next to the station, with RSPB Strumpshaw Fen a short walk away. Strumpshaw Hall Steam Museum is also located in the area.

Mid-Yare NNR is a national nature reserve in Norfolk, east of Norwich, established by English Nature and managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The reserve is made up of four RSPB reserves: Strumpshaw Fen, Buckenham Marshes and Cantley Marshes on the north bank of the Yare, and Surlingham Church Marsh on the south bank.The reserve consists of floodplains along the River Yare, and the total area is 7.8 km2. It centres on the Strumpshaw area. The alder carr and willow carr support the swallowtail butterfly and the Norfolk hawker dragonfly Aeshna isosceles, as well as marsh harriers, bearded tits and Cetti's warblers. The wet grasslands hold internationally important numbers of Eurasian wigeon, nationally important numbers of European white-fronted goose, and Britain's largest flock of bean goose, as well as northern lapwing, common redshank and common snipe. The RSPB controls the water levels, maintains the dykes, cuts the reed beds and keeps disturbance of the wildlife to a minimum.

Hemblington Hall is a large farmhouse in Norfolk county, England, built around 1700 with a Georgian facade. This grade II listed building was the home of the Heath family during the 18th and 19th centuries. The nearby All Saints Church contains memorials to many members of the Heath family. By the 19th century Hemblington Hall was part of the Burlingham Hall Estate owned by the Burroughes family until it was sold off in 1919.Hemblington Hall is listed in Nikolaus Pevsner's guide to the buildings of England and is featured in the Burkes and Savills guide to country houses.
