Oudeschans, Amsterdam

The Montelbaanstoren is a tower on bank of the Oudeschans, Amsterdam canal in the Netherlands. The original tower was built in 1516 as part of the Walls of Amsterdam for the purpose of defending the city and the harbour. The top half, designed by Hendrick de Keyser, was extended to its current, decorative form in 1606. Since then the tower is 48m high.

Uilenburg is a neighborhood of Amsterdam, Netherlands. Uilenburg is an island surrounded by the Oudeschans canal to the northwest, the Houtkopersburgwal canal to the southwest, the Uilenburgergracht to the southeast and the Rapenburgwal to the northeast. The Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat runs along the length of the island, crossing the Houtkopersburgwal and Uilenburgergracht by bridges.

Beit Ha'Chidush (meaning House of Renewal in Hebrew), abbreviated as BHC is a Progressive Jewish congregation, located in Amsterdam, in the North Holland region of The Netherlands. The congregation was founded in 1995 by predominately expatriate Jews with secular and religious backgrounds who wanted to create a welcoming, inspiring and renewed Jewish congregation. Since 1997, the congregation has worshiped from the Uilenburg Synagogue, a synagogue located at Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat 91, in Central Amsterdam. The synagogue was completed in the Louis XV style in 1766 and used by another congregation up until World War II. After a period of profane use by the Municipality of Amsterdam, the synagogue was transferred to the Uilenburgersjoel Foundation, for use by a variety of Jewish organisations.

The Uilenburgergracht is a secondary canal in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It is located east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district, in the Lastage neighborhood. The Uilenburgergracht defines the southeastern border of Uilenburg Island. It is connected to Houtkopersburgwal and Rapenburgwal, which delimit the southwest and the northeast borders of the island. They lead to the Oudeschans canal along the northwest of the island. The Uilenburgergracht was dug in 1593. In the nineteenth century, the newly created islands of Uilenburg, Valkenburg and Marken were the poorest neighborhoods of the Jewish quarter.

Lastage is a neighborhood in the Centrum borough of Amsterdam, Netherlands. It is located between the Geldersekade and Oudeschans canals, just east of old medieval city. Today, the neighbourhood is also known as Nieuwmarktbuurt due to the fact that the Nieuwmarkt is comprised in the area; it is protected as a heritage site.

The Waalseilandsgracht, or Waalseilandgracht, is a short, wide canal in the east part of the inner city of Amsterdam.

De Appel is a contemporary arts centre, located in Amsterdam. Since it was founded in 1975 by Wies Smals, the goal of De Appel is to function as a stage for research and presentation of visual arts. Exhibitions, publications and discursive events are the main activities of De Appel. In 1994, Saskia Bos established an intensive course, called 'The Curatorial Programme'. Over a period of eight months a selective group of five to six people are trained to become a curator. At the end of 2012, former director Ann Demeester initiated a new professional development programme in collaboration with The Fair Gallery: the Gallerist programme. This programme was the first practice-oriented educational course for (aspiring) gallery owners and (young) art professionals who wanted to deepen their curatorial and business competencies in the commercial segment of the art world. Wies Smals established de Appel in 1975. The director of De Appel in 2014 and 2015 was Lorenzo Benedetti. The current director is Monika Szewczyk.

The Kromboomssloot, or Krom Boomssloot, is a canal in the Lastage (Nieuwmarktbuurt) neighborhood in the center of Amsterdam. It provides a transverse navigation from the Rechtboomssloot and was previously called Dwarsboomssloot. As the names indicate, the Rechtboomssloot (Straight Boom Ditch) is completely straight, while there is a curve in the Kromboomssloot (Crooked Boom Ditch). The canal was chosen in 2007 as one of the most beautiful streets in Amsterdam.

The Rapenburgwal is a secondary canal in Amsterdam in the east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district, in the Lastage neighborhood.

The Houtkopersburgwal is a short secondary canal in Amsterdam. It is located in the east of the Amsterdam-Centrum district in the Lastage neighborhood.

Prins Hendrikkade (Dutch for "Prince Henry's Quay") is a major street in the centre of Amsterdam. It passes Amsterdam Central Station, intersects the Damrak at the mouth of the Amstel river, and forms the southern end of the IJtunnel across the IJ bay. The street formed the northern edge and outer harbour of the city until the 19th century. It was named after Prince Henry of the Netherlands, youngest son of King William II, following Henry's death in 1879. The Prins Hendrikkade runs roughly northwest to southeast, from the northern end of Singel canal to Kattenburgerplein square. Car traffic is banned from the part of the street directly in front of Amsterdam Central Station, between Martelaarsgracht and Damrak. The street continues in westerly direction as Nieuwe Westerdokstraat and Haarlemmerhouttuinen. At the eastern end, the street turns north at Kattenburgerplein and continues as Kattenburgerstraat. The body of water between Prins Hendrikkade and the train station is known as Open Havenfront and, further east, as Oosterdok. Along the street are 99 buildings that have been listed as national monument (rijksmonument). Prominent buildings on the street include the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, the Schreierstoren, the Scheepvaarthuis, and Victoria Hotel. Along the eastern part of the street are a number of quays where houseboats are moored. Prins Hendrikkade has been depicted by various artists, including Claude Monet, who painted it in 1874.
