Ferniehill

Fernieside is a neighbourhood on the southern edge of the city of Edinburgh, Scotland, four miles (6.5 km) southeast of the city centre. It is very close to Craigour, which is just to its north, with Ferniehill to the south, Moredun to the west and open land to the east denoting the city boundary (Danderhall a short distance further on); most amenities are found at Gilmerton. Laid out as public housing from 1947, many properties have been sold through right-to-buy legislation, while small private developments have been inserted to the north in the early 21st century.

Gilmerton Cove is a series of underground passageways and chambers hand-carved from sandstone located beneath the streets of Gilmerton, an ex-mining village, now a southeastern suburb of Edinburgh, Scotland. A five-year collaborative project between Gilmerton Heritage Trust and The City of Edinburgh Council allowed the newly restored Cove to open in 2003 as an educational resource for the community as well as a place to visit. There are many theories about the origins of the Cove and its purpose. It is known that it was the 18th century residence of local blacksmith, George Paterson. The parish records show that he was reprimanded for allowing alcohol to be consumed within the Cove on the sabbath.: 102  It is not known whether Paterson was responsible for carving the Cove. In 1769 Thomas Pennant mentions the site in the context of Newbattle Abbey saying that "In the woods adjacent to this seat are some subterraneous (sic) apartments and passages cut out of the live rock: they seem to have been excavated by the ancient inhabitants of the country either as receptacles for their provisions, or a retreat for themselves and families in time of war, in the same manner, as Tacitus relates, as was customary with the old Germans." Extensive archaeological and historical research has failed to resolve the mystery. In 2017, research by scientists from University of St Andrews and University of Edinburgh using ground-penetrating radar indicated that the network of passageways and chambers may be more extensive than that currently exposed.: 107 Popular theories are that it was used as a drinking den for local gentry, a Covenanters refuge, and a smugglers' lair. In 2007, the documentary television series Cities of the Underworld featured Gilmerton Cove in the episode Scotland's Sin City which postulates that the Cove was linked to a nearby Hellfire Club building via a secret passage.

Gilmerton (Scottish Gaelic: Baile GhilleMhoire, IPA:[ˈpaləˈʝiːʎəˈvɔɾʲə]) is a suburb of Edinburgh, about 4 miles (6.4 km) southeast of the city centre. The toponym "Gilmerton" is derived from a combination of Scottish Gaelic: Gille-Moire– a personal name and later surname meaning "Servant of [the Virgin] Mary", from which comes the first element, "Gilmer", – and Old English: ton meaning "settlement" or "farmstead". Versions of the name are recorded from the middle of the 12th century.Gilmerton used to be a coal mining village. Below its centre is a series of shallow linked caves collectively called Gilmerton Cove. Traditionally they were attributed to the work of a local blacksmith, George Paterson, who supposedly completed excavations in 1724 and lived in the caves for several years, although there may be reasons to doubt this.A street in the Dunedin, New Zealand suburb of Corstorphine, Gilmerton Street, is named after the suburb.

Moredun is a district in the south-east of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is east of Liberton, while Craigour is situated just to its north.The estate of Gut-tres or Goodtrees was the family home of James Stewart but it was renamed Moredun House in 1769 by the new owner, David Stuart Moncrieff, in recognition of a hill on his Perthshire estate. The house was acquired in 1923 to convert into a convalescent home for ex-servicemen. It was instead found unsuitable and demolished. The facility was instead created in the form of the Murray Homes for the Scottish Veterans Association in 1929. Part of the estate was also sold in 1924 to create the Moredun Research Institute.In the late 1960s six tower blocks were built in the area; whilst all six remain standing, a large project was undertaken to refurbish them to coincide with the construction of the new Edinburgh Royal Infirmary nearby. Two of the 16-storey blocks – Moncreiffe House and Forteviot House – are within the geographical boundary of Moredun, while the other four are technically in neighbouring Craigour.Moredun contains two clusters of shops on Moredun Park Road as well as a library and a primary school. It has transport links on a par with other similar areas of the city, with the Lothian Buses service 8 and Edinburgh City Council chartered Lothian and First East Lothian 18 passing through the area, with the 3, 7 and 29 services running nearby.

Gilmerton railway station served the suburb of Gilmerton, historically in Edinburghshire and Midlothian, Scotland, from 1874 to 1959 on the Edinburgh, Loanhead and Roslin Railway.

The Drum is an 18th-century country house and estate on the outskirts of Edinburgh, Scotland. Located between the Gilmerton and Danderhall areas, The Drum is 4 miles (6.4 km) south-east of the city centre. The Drum was the seat of the Lords Somerville from the later Middle Ages, who built a 16th-century house on the estate. This was replaced in the 1720s with a classical house by William Adam. Sold by Lord Somerville in the early 19th century, the house remains in private hands.

The Centre for Regenerative Medicine (CRM) is a stem cell research centre at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, dedicated to the study and development of new regenerative treatments for human diseases. The centre forms part of the University's Institute for Regeneration and Repair and is part of the BioQuarter cluster at Little France.

The A772 was a major A road located in Edinburgh, Scotland. The A772 was originally the A7 before a major renumbering of the roads into Edinburgh and also begins there, at a junction with the A701 in the neighbourhood of Nether Liberton. From this junction, the A772 heads south-east through Gilmerton, a suburb of Edinburgh. This part is known as Gilmerton Road and has a 30 mph speed limit. At the edge of Gilmerton, the road becomes Drum Street, where it passes The Drum, an 18th-century country house, before reverting to Gilmerton Road. Approximately 0.5 miles (0.80 km) from its eastern terminus, it crosses over the Edinburgh City Bypass (A720) as a partial grade-separated junction utilizing a pair of roundabouts, where there is evidence of the junction almost having an east-facing sliproad. Continuing along the Gilmerton Road, the A772 has a roundabout for Dobbies Garden Centre and Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World, and an inn. Shortly afterwards, the A772 meets its eastern terminus at the Gilmerton Road Roundabout with the A7 and B6392 (formerly the A68) at the community of Melville Nurseries, between Lasswade and Dalkeith. The B6392 continues to be called Gilmerton Road as far as the River North Esk.

Little France is a suburb of Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. It is on the A7, approximately 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the city centre. The area falls within the parish of Liberton in the south-east of the city. It acquired its name from members of the entourage brought to Scotland from France by Mary, Queen of Scots, who took up residence at nearby Craigmillar Castle. The French left the city following the siege of Leith, under the terms of the Treaty of Edinburgh.Little France is the location of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, and is adjacent to Craigour, which is just to its south.

The Edinburgh BioQuarter is a bioscience community based in the Little France area of Edinburgh. It is a key initiative in the development of Scotland's life sciences industry, which as of August 2020 employs more than 39,000 people in over 750 organisations. An estimated 8,000 people work or study at the BioQuarter, generating £280 million in gross value added each year. The BioQuarter site is not expected to be fully occupied until around 2036, but is already the third largest bioscience community in the UK, after Cambridge and the Newcastle Helix at Newcastle University.

The Royal Hospital for Children and Young People is a hospital that specialises in paediatric healthcare. The hospital replaced the Royal Hospital for Sick Children (the Sick Kids) in Sciennes. It forms part of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh campus in the Edinburgh BioQuarter at Little France, Edinburgh. The facility provides care for children and young people from birth to around 16 years of age and is managed by NHS Lothian.

The University of Edinburgh Medical School (also known as Edinburgh Medical School) is the medical school of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland and the United Kingdom and part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, the head of which is Moira Whyte, who has also been head of the school since 2016. It was established in 1726, during the Scottish Enlightenment, making it the oldest medical school in the United Kingdom and is one of the oldest medical schools in the English-speaking world. The medical school in 2021 was ranked 1st in the UK by the Guardian University Guide,. In 2013 and 2014, it was ranked 3rd in the UK by the Guardian University Guide, The Times Good University Guide. and the Complete University Guide. It ranked 21st in the world by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2013–14 and 22nd in the world by the QS World University Rankings 2014. According to a Healthcare Survey run by Saga in 2006, the medical school's main teaching hospital, the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, was considered the best hospital in Scotland. The medical school's early focus on academic understanding puts its graduates amongst the top candidates in postgraduate qualification exams, and renders them very competitive applicants with regard to clinical posts. As of 2017 the school accepts 184 medical students per year from the United Kingdom, 5 students from the European Union and an additional 14 students from elsewhere. Admission is very competitive, with an acceptance rate of 11.5% for the 2012–13 admissions year. The matriculation rate, the percentage of people who are accepted who choose to attend, is 71% for the 2012–13 admissions year. The school requires the 3rd highest entry grades in the UK according to the Guardian University Guide 2014.The medical school is associated with 3 Nobel Prize winners: 2 winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine and 1 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Graduates of the medical school have founded medical schools and universities all over the world including 5 out of the 7 Ivy League medical schools (Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Pennsylvania and Dartmouth), Vermont, McGill, Sydney, Montréal, the Royal Postgraduate Medical School (now part of Imperial College London), the Cape Town, Birkbeck, Middlesex Hospital and the London School of Medicine for Women (both now part of UCL).
