Aarau (Swiss Standard German: [ˈaːraʊ], Alemannic German pronunciation: [ˈɑːræu̯]) is a town, a municipality, and the capital of the northern Swiss canton of Aargau. The town is also the capital of the district of Aarau. It is German-speaking and predominantly Protestant. Aarau is situated on the Swiss plateau, in the valley of the Aare, on the river's right bank, and at the southern foot of the Jura Mountains, and is west of Zürich, 58 kilometres (36 mi) south of Basel and 65 kilometres (40 mi) northeast of Bern. The municipality borders directly on the canton of Solothurn to the west. It is the largest town in Aargau. At the beginning of 2010 Rohr became a district of Aarau.The official language of Aarau is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

The river Suhre is a 34 kilometer long tributary of the river Aare in the Swiss cantons of Lucerne and Aargau. The river rises in Sempachersee (or Lake Sempach) at an elevation of 504 meters above sea level, and joins the Aare east of the town Aarau at an elevation of 362 meters. The most important side valley is the Ruedertal, which joins the Suhretal (or Suhre Valley) at Schöftland. In the medieval age, the river had several names: Suron (1036), Suranum flumen (1210), Sure (1241). Today, the name is written without "h" in the canton of Lucerne, and with "h" in the canton of Aargau. The most important tributaries are the Ruederchen joining at Schöftland, the Ürke joining at Unterentfelden and the Wyna joining at Suhr.

Staffelegg Pass (el. 621 m.) is a mountain pass in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland. It connects Küttigen and Asp. The postal bus route from Frick to Aarau goes over the pass, and there is a restaurant at the summit.

The old cantonal school of Aarau (in German: AKSA, Alte Kantonsschule Aarau or Alte Kanti) was founded in 1802 and is the oldest non-church secondary school in Switzerland.

Aarau railway station (German: Bahnhof Aarau) serves the municipality of Aarau, capital town of the canton of Aargau, Switzerland. Opened in 1856, it is owned and operated by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB CFF FFS). The station forms the junction between the Olten–Aarau railway, the Zurich-Aarau railway and the Baden–Aarau railway. Previously, it was also a terminus of the now closed Aarau–Suhr railway.On the southern side of the station yard is the separate railway station Aarau WSB for the metre gauge trains of the Menziken–Aarau–Schöftland line of Aargau Verkehr AG (AVA). Its infrastructure (its own station building, 2 platforms serving three tracks, no. 11–13) is directly connected with Aarau railway station.

Aarau WSB railway station (German: Bahnhof Aarau WSB) is a railway station in the municipality of Aarau, the capital city of the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is the principal intermediate point on the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) gauge Schöftland–Aarau–Menziken line of Aargau Verkehr. The station is the main point of transfer to the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) lines, and is situated across Hintere Bahnhofstrasse from the south side of the SBB station. The station buildings and platforms of both stations are connected by a common pedestrian subway.The station has three tracks, served by a side platform and an island platform.

The Aargauer Kunsthaus (English: Aargau Art House) is a Swiss art museum founded in 1959, and located in Aarau. The museum collection includes Swiss art from the 18th century to the present day; and Naturama, a natural history collection.

Aarau Torfeld railway station (German: Bahnhof Aarau Torfeld) is a railway station in the municipality of Aarau, in the Swiss canton of Aargau. It is an intermediate stop on the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) gauge Schöftland–Aarau–Menziken line of Aargau Verkehr. The station opened on 10 December 2017.

Benkerjoch Pass (el. 674 m) is a mountain pass in the canton of Aargau in Switzerland. It connects Küttigen and Oberhof. Until 1801, the pass was the boundary between Austria and Switzerland. The current pass road was built in 1977. A postal bus route runs over the pass to Aarau.

The Wasserflue is a mountain of the Jura, located north of Erlinsbach in the canton of Aargau. It lies on the range east of the Salhöhe Pass. An antenna is located on the summit
