The Franklin Harris Farmstead is a historic farm complex located outside the village of Salem in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. Once home to a prominent former soldier, the farmstead includes a high-style farmhouse from the 1890s, and it has been named a historic site. Growing up a Quaker, Franklin Harris lived in Butler Township from the cradle. At age 22, two months after the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in military service; after service in the 104th OVI, he served in the carpenter corps until being discharged in 1863. Returning home, he worked in Salem and rented a farm before buying the present property. He and his wife Priscilla were responsible for the construction of the present farmstead, which they operated as a dairy farm.Built in 1894, the farmhouse mixes elements of the Queen Anne and Stick-Eastlake styles. Set on a foundation of sandstone, the wooden house is covered with a slate roof. One of the house's small porches shelters the main entrance, which is placed in the area sheltered between the ell and the house's main section. Both the main section and the ell are two and a half stories in height and rise to intersecting gables. Fenestration is generally regular, although only a single window overlooks the entrance porch, and the front end of the main section of the house includes two irregularly placed windows.In 1997, the Harris Farmstead was listed on the National Register of Historic Places, qualifying because of its historically significant architecture. The designation embraces five buildings across an area of 4 acres (1.6 ha), including the agricultural outbuildings.

Kent State University at Salem (Kent State Salem) is a satellite campus in Salem Township and Salem, Ohio. Kent State Salem offers baccalaureate and associate degree programs and is administered with Kent State University at East Liverpool as Kent State University's Columbiana County Campuses. As of 2021, enrollment at Kent State Salem was 957 with total enrollment for the Columbiana Campuses at over 1,400. Kent State Salem occupies two buildings, the City Center and the Main Building. The City Center is located in downtown Salem on the former site of Salem High School, while the Main Building is located on the 98 acres (40 ha) campus in Salem Township, just south of the Salem city limits. In August 2011, the Health and Sciences wing was completed. The wing consists of additional centralized classrooms, labs, lecture hall and centralized faculty offices for nursing and radiology.

Covering 400 acres of land, the district encompasses approximately 108 buildings, primarily residences, that contribute to the significance of the area. The district is notable for the architecture and design of the contributing buildings. Examples of a number of architectural styles are seen, including Mid 19th Century Revival; Victorian; and Federal.The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in August 1993.

Salem First United Methodist Church is a historic church located at 244 S. Broadway in Salem, Ohio. It was built in 1910 and added to the National Register in 1995.

WQXK (105.1 FM, "K-105") is a commercial radio station, licensed to Salem, Ohio, and serving the Youngstown metropolitan area and the Mahoning Valley. It is one of eight radio stations in the Youngstown radio market owned by Cumulus Media and broadcasts a country music radio format. The studios and offices are in "The Radio Center" in Youngstown. WQXK has an effective radiated power of 88,000 watts. While most FM stations in the region are limited to 50,000 watts, WQXK is grandfathered at its unusually high power. The transmitter is off Franklin Avenue in Salem.

The Salem Downtown Historic District is located in Salem, Ohio. The district covers approximately 95 acres (38 ha) bounded by Vine, Ohio, East Pershing, and South Ellsworth Streets, as well as Sugar Tree Alley. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in December 1995.

Salem is a city in northern Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. At the 2020 census, the city's population was 11,915. Extending into southern Mahoning County, it is the principal city of the Salem micropolitan area, which includes all of Columbiana County. It lies about 18 miles (29 km) southwest of Youngstown, 28 miles (45 km) east of Canton, and 60 miles (97 km) southeast of Cleveland. Founded by the Quaker society in 1806, Salem was notably active in the abolitionist movement of the early- to mid-19th century as a hub for the American Underground Railroad. Through the 20th century, Salem served as one of many industrial towns in Northeast Ohio's Mahoning Valley region. Today, the city is a commuter town and an economic center of Columbiana County, home to Allegheny Wesleyan College and Kent State University at Salem.

The Burchfield Homestead was the boyhood home of Charles E. Burchfield. It is located in Salem, Ohio, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Charles Burchfield was noted for his paintings of scenes in and around this home. Art historian Henry Adams, curator of American Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art, called the house "a building of extraordinary significance."
