Schwanden bei Brienz

Brienz railway station is a railway station in the village of Brienz in the Swiss canton of Bern. Brienz is a stop on the Brünig line, owned by the Zentralbahn, that operates between Interlaken and Lucerne. It is located across the street from Brienz BRB railway station, the lower terminus of the Brienz–Rothorn rack railway (BRB) that climbs to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn mountain. The station provides an interchange with the local bus network provided by PostBus Switzerland. Shipping services operated by the BLS AG on Lake Brienz call at a quay adjacent to the station, linking to various lakeside places between Brienz and Interlaken. Amongst other destinations, buses link to the Ballenberg open-air museum, whilst boats link to the lower station of the Giessbach Funicular, which gives access to the Giessbach Falls. The station was opened in 1888 by the Jura–Bern–Lucerne Railway, as the western terminus of the Brünig line, with journeys to and from Interlaken requiring passengers and goods to transfer between trains and boats on Lake Brienz. The Brienz–Rothorn line terminus opened in 1892. Brienz remained the terminus of the Brünig line until 1916, when the line was extended along the north shore of Lake Brienz to Interlaken Ost, thus eliminating the need for transfer. Brünig line trains were hauled by steam locomotives until the early 1940s, when the line was electrified. Ownership of the Brünig line section of the station was transferred to the Swiss Federal Railway in 1903, and to the Zentralbahn in 2004. The Brünig line platforms of the station lie alongside the lake, and comprise two tracks with two flanking platforms. On the northern and inland side, the station building is situated between the platforms and the main road along the north shore of the lake. The terminus of the Brienz–Rothorn rack railway lies on the opposite side of this road, and the two railways and are not physically connected. The bus terminus is located to the west of the station building, between the Brünig line platforms and the main road, whilst the ferry pier is immediately to the south-east of the station, accessed by a level crossing.

Brienz BRB railway station (German: Bahnhof Brienz BRB) is a railway station in the municipality of Brienz, in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is the lower terminus of the Brienz–Rothorn rack railway (BRB) that climbs to the summit of the Brienzer Rothorn mountain. The station is located across the street from Brienz railway station on the 1,000 mm (3 ft 3+3⁄8 in) gauge Brünig line of Zentralbahn with service to Lucerne and Interlaken Ost. Connections are also available to local bus network provided by PostBus Switzerland, and shipping services operated by the BLS AG on Lake Brienz at an adjacent quay. Amongst other destinations, buses link to the Ballenberg open-air museum, whilst boats link to the lower station of the Giessbach Funicular, which gives access to the Giessbach Falls. The station opened in 1892, four years after the Jura–Bern–Lucerne Railway opened Brienz railway station.

Hofstetten bei Brienz is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Brienz (US: bree-ENTS, German: [briːnts], Alemannic German pronunciation: [b̥riə̯nts]) is a village and municipality on the northern shore of Lake Brienz, at the foot of the Brienzer Rothorn mountain, and in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. Besides the village of Brienz, the municipality includes the settlements of Kienholz and Axalp. Politically, the municipality is located in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district of the canton of Bern.

Brienz West railway station is a Swiss railway station in the municipality of Brienz and the canton of Bern. Brienz West is a stop on the Brünig line, owned by the Zentralbahn, that operates between Interlaken and Lucerne.

The Giessbach Funicular (German: Giessbachbahn) is a historic funicular in the Swiss canton of Bern and municipality of Brienz. It links a landing stage on Lake Brienz, served by shipping services on the lake, to the Grand Hotel Giessbach and Giessbach Falls above. The funicular is owned by the hotel, but since 1983 has been operated by a preservation foundation.

Brienzwiler is a municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland. Besides the village of Brienzwiler, the municipality also includes the settlement of Balmhof.

Axalp is a high alpine pasture in the Bernese Oberland, on the northern slope of Axalphorn, overlooking Lake Brienz, today part of Brienz municipality. Axalp was historically the name of the high pastures (alps), on the northern slopes of the Axalpburg, Tschingel and Axalphorn peaks, between c. 1500 m and 1900 m (46.712°N 8.046°E / 46.712; 8.046). Axalp was developed as a tourist resort since the late 19th century, and as a ski resort since the 1960s. In the later 20th century, the name of the pasture has been transferred to the ski resort, including the infrastructure, hotels and chalets built up below Axalp proper, between 1400 m and 1500 m.

Hinterburgsee (or Hinterburgseeli) is a lake in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. Its surface area is 5 ha (12 acres).

Ballenberg is an open-air museum in Switzerland that displays traditional buildings and architecture from all over the country. Located near Brienz in the municipality of Hofstetten bei Brienz, Canton of Bern, Ballenberg has over 100 original buildings that have been transported from their original sites. It is a Swiss heritage site of national significance. In addition to the main attraction of the buildings themselves, some of the industrial and crafting buildings still operate to give demonstrations of traditional rural crafts, techniques and cheesemaking. There is also a sizable number of farmyard animals in the grounds. Founded in 1978, the museum features buildings from all over the country and has structures from almost all of the cantons. The buildings are set in surroundings appropriate to their type (farm buildings surrounded by small fields etc.) with pathways snaking across the 660,000 square metres (164 acre) site. Most buildings allow the visitor to walk around the rooms, each recreated from the time period of the building or brought over wholesale when the building was transplanted. The museum is divided into the various regions of Switzerland with the structures carefully chosen to give a view of traditional architecture from those areas. The regions represented are: Alpine - the higher mountain areas of the cantons of Bern, Graubünden, Nidwalden, Obwalden and Valais Bernese Midlands - from the central region of the Canton of Bern. Bernese Oberland - the higher areas of southern Canton of Bern. Central Midlands - the central region of the Canton of Aargau. Central Switzerland - cantons of Nidwalden, Obwalden and parts of Luzern, Schwyz, Uri and Zug. East Midlands - the Canton of Zurich and some areas of the cantons of Schaffhausen and Thurgau. Eastern Switzerland - the central valley areas of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, Appenzell Innerrhoden and St. Gallen. Jura - the central regions of the cantons of Jura, Neuchâtel and the northern areas of Vaud. The Valais - the valley areas of the Canton of Valais. Ticino - the central areas of Ticino. West Midlands - central Fribourg and Vaud.

Abplanalp is a Swiss surname. Originally a locational surname, it is derived from Planalp, the name of an alpine pasture (alp) and dispersed settlement above Brienz, Bernese Oberland, on the southern flank of Brienzer Rothorn, at an altitude between about 1300 and 1900 metres above sea level, now also the name of a stop of the Brienz Rothorn Railway (1341 m). The settlement is a Walser foundation, first recorded in 1306. At least seasonal use of the area is assumed for the late Roman period, as numerous local toponyms have Latin etymologies. The lower part of the settlement was formerly permanently inhabited, known by the name of Husstatt. It is now a seasonal pasture, divided into five lots or Stafel: Usweid (1350 m), Greesgi (1560 m), Rinderbiel (1760 m), Gummi (1820 m), and Obristen (also Ober Stafel, 1830 m). Substantial avalanche defenses were built after the winter 1942/3. There is a legend according to which Planalp was completely destroyed by avalanches, the only survivor being an infant boy found floating in its cradle in Lake Brienz. Since the identity of the infant was unknown, it was given the surname of Abplanalp, ab being Latin for 'from'. As a Swiss-American surname, Abplanalp has also been simplified to Aplanalp or Planalp. The Brienzer Rothorn is a mountain of the Emmental Alps, in Switzerland. With an elevation of 2,350 metres (7,710 ft) above sea level, the Brienzer Rothorn is the highest summit of the range. To its west lies the Tannhorn, whilst to its east are Arnihaaggen, Höch Gumme and the Brünig Pass (1,008 metres (3,307 ft)). On its south side it overlooks Lake Brienz, whilst to the north it looks out over the Waldemme valley. Administratively, the summit is shared by the municipalities of Brienz, to the south-west, Schwanden bei Brienz, to the south-east, Giswil to the north-east, and Flühli, to the north-west. Brienz and Schwanden bei Brienz are in the canton of Bern, Giswil is in the canton of Obwalden, and Flühli is in the canton of Lucerne. The Brienzer Rothorn is the highest point in the canton of Lucerne. The summit can be reached from Brienz by the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (steam train), the summit station being located at 2,244 metres (7,362 ft) on the Bernese side. It can also be reached from Sörenberg, in Flühli, by cable car.
