Draycott and Church Wilne

Draycott is a village in the Erewash district of Derbyshire, England. It lies around 6 miles east of Derby and 3 miles south-west of Long Eaton. Draycott is part of the civil parish of Draycott and Church Wilne. The population of this civil parish was 3,090 as taken at the 2011 Census. The meandering course of the River Derwent forms the southwestern boundary of the parish. The route of the former Derby Canal can still be traced across the parish. Trains on the Midland Main Line pass through the village but Draycott railway station is now closed. Elvaston Castle is nearby.

Draycott railway station was a station which served the village of Draycott, Derbyshire, England. It was located on the south side of Station Road.

Western Mere Secondary School was a school in Breaston, Derbyshire. Established in 1957, the school was located on Gregory Avenue until it was closed in 1990 and demolished in 1992. The area is now used a grazing area for horses, though the old school is still visible on the ground with the floors still visible.

Hopwell is a hamlet and civil parish in the south east of Derbyshire, England. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 33. It lies south of Dale Abbey and north of Draycott. Since 1974 it has been part of the Erewash borough. The parish falls under the authority of Risley ‘Risley with Hopwell Parish Council’. and is located in the Draycott & Risley Ward.

Great Wilne is a small village in Derbyshire, England on the border with Leicestershire. It is 7 miles (11 km) south east of Derby. It is a village split from its church of St Chad's by the river. The church is at the very small hamlet of Church Wilne which can only be approached by a short walk via the bridge over the River Derwent, or by a fair car journey which necessitates travelling out of the county. The population at the 2011 Census is included in the civil parish of Shardlow and Great Wilne.

Shardlow Hall is a 17th-century former country house at Shardlow, Derbyshire now in use as commercial offices. It is a Grade II* listed building which is officially listed on the Buildings at Risk Register.The house was built in 1684 for Leonard Fosbrooke, originally to an H-plan design with two storeys with parapets and a six-bay entrance front. A series of six Leonard Fosbrookes succeeded to the estate, two of whom served as High Sheriff of Derbyshire. A new seven-bayed west garden front was constructed in 1726, and in the late 18th century the entrance front was extended by the creation of single-storey wings, each terminating in a pedimented two-storey pavilion.The Fosbrookes moved to Ravenstone Hall and in 1826 sold the house to James Sutton of Shardlow, High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1842. The house ceased use as a residence and was occupied by Shardlow Hall School from 1911 to 1933. More recently it has been used as commercial offices.

Shardlow Hall was a school in Shardlow, a village seven miles south of Derby in the English Midlands. It was founded by B.O.Corbett, who had played football for England, as a preparatory school for boys. One of its notable students was John Harris, who wrote under the name John Wyndham.

Hopwell Hall country house near Ockbrook, Derbyshire was built in 1720. It was owned by five generations of the Pares family from 1786 to 1921. The hall was demolished after a fire in 1957.The hall was built by Henry Keyes on the site of the previous 16th century hall belonging to the Sacheverell family. Henry Keyes inherited the estate in 1661 from his cousin Ferdinand Sacheverell. Keyes acquired neighbouring land from the Piggin family to extend his estate.Thomas Pares I (1716-1805) was an attorney in Leicester and his uncle was John Pares who had been Mayor of Leicester in 1714. Thomas married Ann Norton and they bought the family estate of Hopwell Hall in 1786. Their eldest son Thomas Pares II (1746-1824) was a wealthy lawyer and banker in London, who owned numerous properties including Narborough Hall and Greyfriars, Leicester. When his father died in 1805 Thomas inherited Hopwell Hall which he retired to. He died unmarried and with no children in 1824 and left a long complicated will. Most of his land including Hopwell Hall went to his younger brother John Pares (1749-1833). However Narborough Hall and its estate were passed on to his niece Mary Ann Dod (1776-1846), daughter of his sister Ann Pares who had married John Dod of Cloverley. John Pares was a hosiery manufacturer and banker who lived in Leicester and died in 1833. His eldest son Thomas Pares III (1790-1866) was a lawyer and MP for Leicester from 1818 until 1826 and he inherited Hopwell Hall. His eldest Thomas Henry Pares (1830-1878) inherited the family estates, as did his son Major Edward Henry Pares JP (1854-1931). The hall was let to tenants from the 1890s. In 1921 Cecil Henry Pares gave Hopwell Hall and 15 acres of its land to Nottinghamshire County Council as a special residential school for boys. He had inherited the estate after his elder brother Lieutenant Thomas Edward Pares was killed in action in 1917 during World War I. Cecil chose to live at the family's home at Calvi in Corsica, rather than at Hopwell Hall. A new wing was opened in 1948 which doubled the school's size. A fire destroyed the hall in 1957 and it was demolished. A new concrete building was erected on the site of the old hall and the special school continued to operate there until it was closed in 1995. There is now a large private house on the site called Hopwell Hall.The archive of documents from the Pares family and the Hopwell Hall estate was donated to the Derbyshire Record Office in 2000.

Ockbrook and Borrowash (grid reference SK425351) is a civil parish in the borough of Erewash in the county of Derbyshire in England. It straddles the A52 a few miles east of Derby and contains two adjacent villages of very different character: Ockbrook, which lies just north of the A52 and Borrowash which lies to the south. The 2001 Census records Ockbrook and Borrowash having a population of 7,331 people, with 1,443 being aged 0–15, 4,504 being 16-64 and 1,384 being 65 or older. These people make up 3006 households. 2,456 of the homes are owner occupied (81.7%), higher than the Derbyshire average of 74.4%. The unemployment rate is 2.5%, less than the Derbyshire average of 3.2%. The civil parish population at the 2011 Census had increased marginally to 7,335.
