Asticou Inn

The Asticou Azalea Garden in Northeast Harbor, Maine, United States, is a popular visitor attraction. It was created by lifelong resident of the village, Charles Kenneth Savage, in 1956. Much of the initial plant collection originated at Reef Point Estate in nearby Bar Harbor, the summer residence of renowned landscape architect Beatrix Farrand. The collection was moved with the financial assistance of John D. Rockefeller Jr., including the weeping hemlock, just north of the main bridge. Located at the intersection of Route 198 and Route 3 (Peabody Drive), the 2.3 acres (0.93 ha) garden and its pond are open to the public during daylight hours from May 1 to October 31. It features a selection of rhododendrons and azaleas, including the Rhododendron canadense, Maine's native azalea. Styled after a Japanese stroll garden, the fine-gravel paths are raked regularly in a manner that suggests flowing water. There is also a sand garden, where this effect is repeated but with the addition of stones, which are meant to represent islands.Savage was also the owner of the Asticou Inn, which is located on the opposite side of Peabody Drive. Prior to the establishment of the garden, the Savage children and grandchildren had made a treehouse and rope swing in the white pine still standing today. Thuya Garden is a semi-formal herbaceous garden, in the style of Gertrude Jekyll, located at 15 Thuya Drive, Northeast Harbor, Maine. It is open daily from May through October. The garden is located on the grounds of Thuya Lodge, built between 1912 and 1916 for Boston landscape architect Joseph Henry Curtis. At that time, today's garden was an orchard. After Curtis' death in 1928, Thuya Lodge and its grounds were placed in a trust directed by his friend Charles K. Savage, an heir of the nearby Asticou Inn and creator of the Asticou Azalea Garden. Today's greatly expanded garden was originally conceived in 1933 by Savage, and built from 1956 to 1961 with plants from Beatrix Farrand's Reef Point Garden in Bar Harbor when that estate was dismantled in 1956, and with financial help from John D. Rockefeller Jr. It opened to the public in 1962. The garden is laid out as a narrow lawn axis with cross-axes, edged by a rustic pavilion to its north and a shallow reflecting pool to the south. Flower beds contain about half perennials and half annuals, with plantings of rhododendrons and mountain laurels.

Daniel Coit Gilman Summer House, also known as Over Edge, is a historic house on Huntington Lane, a private road off Huntington Road in Northeast Harbor, Maine. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 for its association with Daniel Coit Gilman (1831–1908), the president of Johns Hopkins University and a leading advocate of graduate education in the United States. The house is still used as a private summer residence.

Northeast Harbor is a village on Mount Desert Island, located in the town of Mount Desert in Hancock County, Maine, United States. The Union Church of Northeast Harbor is a historic church at 21 Summit Road in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Designed by Peabody and Stearns and built in 1887, it is a notable local example of Shingle style architecture. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. The congregation is affiliated with the United Church of Christ.

St. Mary's-By-The-Sea is a historic Gothic Revival church at 20 South Shore Road in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Designed by English architect Henry Vaughan and built in 1902, it is one of a number of architect-designed summer chapels built around the turn of the 20th century with funding from wealthy summer residents. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. Its parish is also responsible for services at Saint Jude's Episcopal Church, another National Register-listed chapel in Seal Harbor.

Sea Change is a historic summer estate at 27 Corning Way in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Its main house is an International style structure, originally built in 1940 to a design by Wallace K. Harrison in collaboration with Isamu Noguchi, and rebuilt from the original plans in 2005 after a fire destroyed the original. Outbuildings on the property include three once-detached Shingle style cabins and a carriage house (now converted to a caretaker's quarters), all built in the late 19th century by Erastus Corning. The most unusual structure on the property is a large reinforced concrete bomb shelter, built in 1961–62 to design by William F. Pedersen. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2009, for its exceptional collection of modern architecture, including the Cold War-era bunker and a rare Harrison design located outside New York.

Bear Island Light is a lighthouse on Bear Island near Mt. Desert Island, at the entrance to Northeast Harbor, Maine. It was first established in 1839. The present structure was built in 1889. It was deactivated in 1981 and relit as a private aid to navigation by the Friends of Acadia National Park in 1989. Bear Island Light was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as Bear Island Light Station on March 14, 1988.

Bear Island is an 11-acre (4.5 ha) island located in Maine, United States. It is one of the five islands of the Town of Cranberry Isles. The island is located just off Northeast Harbor and south of Mount Desert Island. Bear Island Light sits on the western end of the island. It was built in 1889 and staffed until 1981. The lighthouse is now a private aid to navigation and a private residence. The rest of the island has belonged to the Dunbar family since 1884 (or 1886), after it was bought by Harvard professor Charles F. Dunbar.

Little Long Pond is a pond in Seal Harbor, Maine, United States, at the southern end of Mount Desert Island. Fed by Jordan Stream, a runoff of Jordan Pond, the pond is separated from Bracy Cove at the Gulf of Maine by a narrow causeway carrying State Route 3. It is officially called Long Pond, but has been given the Little prefix to differentiate it from other Long Ponds in the area. A 2.2 miles (3.5 km) trail circumnavigates the pond, while an offshoot leads to Jordan Pond House. Mostly flat on its eastern side, it rises somewhat from the pond's northern end to around halfway down its western side.Little Long Pond includes 17 acres of meadows, 12 acres of marsh, a bog and nearly 1,000 acres of forest. A boat house stands on the eastern shore of the pond. It is possible it was used to serve the farm of Frank Callahan, which stood near the opposite shore in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It has since been demolished. John D. Rockefeller Jr. purchased the land around the pond for its scenic value, and built in 1914 The Eyrie, a summer house atop the hill immediately to the east of the pond. It was torn down in 1962. The land was privately owned until 2015 when, in celebration of his 100th birthday, David Rockefeller Sr. donated it to the Land & Garden Preserve.There is a parking space either side of the gate and along the northern side of Route 3.

Jordan Stream is a watercourse, about 1.4 miles (2.3 km) long, in the American village of Seal Harbor, Maine. It originates at the southern end of Jordan Pond, in the nearby town of Mount Desert, and flows directly south to its mouth at the northern end of Little Long Pond.The Jordan Stream valley is pre-glacial. It originally drained southeasterly to Seal Harbor but now drains, initially through a bedrock gorge, southwesterly.

The Fernald Point Prehistoric Site is an archaeological site in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island on the central coast of Maine. The principal feature of the site is a shell midden, whose excavation has yielded both historic artifacts and evidence of human occupation to at least 1000 BCE. The site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
