Barranquitas barrio-pueblo

El Cortijo (Spanish for 'the farmhouse'), popularly known as Castillo El Cortijo, is a historic 1939 country house designed by famed Puerto Rican architect Rafael Carmoega. It is located on a hill that overlooks Barranquitas Pueblo, the administrative and historic center of the municipality of Barranquitas, Puerto Rico. It is the summer residence of the Lozana-Fabián family, associated with the sugarcane industry of the island and descendants of Spanish entrepreneur Rafael Fabián y Fabián. El Cortijo and its surrounding structures, gardens and paths were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018 as they are one of the most exemplary works of Rafael Carmoega along with the Capitol of Puerto Rico and the Roosevelt Tower and Quadrangle in the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus.

Barranquitas (Spanish pronunciation: [baraŋˈkitas], locally [baraŋˈkitaʔ]) is a small mountain town and municipality located in the Cordillera Central region of Puerto Rico, south of Corozal and Naranjito; north of Coamo and Aibonito; west of Comerío and Cidra; and east of Orocovis. Barranquitas is spread over 6 barrios and Barranquitas Pueblo (the downtown area and the administrative center of the city). It is part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. Barranquitas is about one hour by winding roads from San Juan, the capital. It is nestled amid hills and mountains, and nearby, between Barranquitas and Aibonito, is the San Cristóbal Canyon; one of the deepest canyons in the West Indies. For years, the overlook was used as a municipal garbage; in the last decade, the refuse was removed and the site restored.

Casa Natal de Luis Muñoz Rivera located in Barranquitas, Puerto Rico is a structure of great political and cultural significance. Built in 1850, it is the place where Luis Muñoz Rivera was born in 1859. The residence is representative of how middle-class Puerto Ricans lived at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century. It is a political and cultural symbol, not only for the people of Barranquitas, but for all of Puerto Rico. In addition to its political and historical value, the structure is a good example of the Creole residential architecture of the interior of the island of Puerto Rico at that time. The house is characterized by the simplicity of its architectural components and by the use of wood, both in the structure as in the details. Its plant is rectangular in shape and has a pitched roof. The main facade stands on a podium, and consists of a balcony adorned by a continuous balustrade and four columns that support the roof of the balcony. In 1959, it was restored and transformed into a library-museum by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture.

San Cristóbal Canyon (Spanish: Cañón San Cristóbal) is a canyon carved by the Usabón River and numerous other rivers and creeks in central Puerto Rico. San Cristóbal Canyon and the neighboring Las Bocas Canyon are part of a larger canyon system belonging to the La Plata River basin in the Cordillera Central mountain range. San Cristóbal is the deepest land canyon in the Caribbean, and it is home to some of the tallest waterfalls in Puerto Rico. Despite this superlative and there being more than 696 species of flora and 144 species of fauna that call the canyon habitat home it was used as a landfill dump between 1954 and 1974, and it was not until 1978 that it became protected by the government of Puerto Rico.
