Lake Illawarra

Lake Illawarra High School is a government-funded co-educational comprehensive secondary day school, located on Reddall Parade, which follows the shores of Lake Illawarra, in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia. Established in 1972, the school enrolled approximately 519 students in 2018, from Year 7 to Year 12, of whom 18 percent identified as Indigenous Australians and eight percent were from a language background other than English. The school is operated by the New South Wales Department of Education.

Mount Warrigal is a large suburb of Shellharbour, New South Wales, Australia. The population, according to the 2016 Australian Census, was 4,909. The suburb is in the Shellharbour City LGA.

Tallawarra Power Station is a 435-megawatt (583,000 hp) combined cycle natural gas power station in the city of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. Owned and operated by EnergyAustralia, the station is the first of its type in New South Wales and produces electricity for the state during periods of high demand. It is located on the western shore of Lake Illawarra in the suburb of Yallah. The station comprises a 260-megawatt (350,000 hp) gas turbine and a 160-megawatt (210,000 hp) steam turbine unit and has a total capacity of 435 megawatts (583,000 hp). It uses many of the previous power station's structures including the cooling system channels from Lake Illawarra. The power station is connected to the state grid via a 132kV switching station maintained by Endeavour Energy (Previously known as Integral Energy). TRUenergy has also indicated that an additional power plant is being considered for the site, to be known as Tallawarra B.

Lake Illawarra is a suburb of Shellharbour, New South Wales, Australia located on the southern side of the Lake Illawarra entrance. Average annual precipitation is 1,352 millimetres. The rainiest month is February, with an average of 211 mm of precipitation, and the driest is July, with 36 mm of precipitation.

Dapto Smelting Works, also known as Lake Illawarra Smelting Works, was a smelter for base metals and gold-bearing pyrite and telluride ores, at modern-day Kanahooka, near Dapto, New South Wales. The smelter operated, from 1897 to 1905. It also produced sulphuric acid, some of which it used itself as a reagent. The smelter was established and first operated by Smelting Company of Australia Limited. From 1902, the smelter was owned and operated by another company, Smelting and Refining Company of Australia Limited, until that company went into voluntary liquidation, in 1905. The relocation of smelter operations, to Port Kembla, by then owner Australian Smelting Company, was abandoned in 1908, and was not revived by its successor Australian Smelting Corporation. None of those four companies should be confused with, Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Company of Australia Limited (ER&S), which operated a copper smelting and refining plant at Port Kembla, from 1908. Australian Smelting Company, as referred to here, should not be confused with the nearly identically-named company, Australian Smelting Company Proprietary Limited, that earlier had operated a smelter at Dry Creek, South Australia. In the years when the Dapto Smelting Works operated, the area where it was located—now Kanahooka—was sometimes referred to as 'Lake Illawarra', but that should not be confused with the modern-day suburb of Lake Illawarra, which is on the opposite side of the lake, to the south of its entrance.

Windang is a suburb of Wollongong in New South Wales on the southern tip of the peninsula guarding the ocean entrance to Lake Illawarra. Windang is popular for its fishing, prawning, boating, windsurfing and yachting. Windang is about 98 km south of Sydney, approximately 20 minutes drive south of the Wollongong CBD and about seven minutes from Shellharbour.

Balarang is a suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, located on the southern shore of Lake Illawarra. It is officially designated an urban place, and forms the eastern end of the suburb of Oak Flats. The name is said to mean "place of swamp oak".

Koonawarra is a suburb of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia. It is located on the western shore of Lake Illawarra. Koonawarra, or Exmouth, as it was then called, was one of the first five land grants located in the Illawarra. It was a grant of 1300 acres made to Richard Brooks in 1817. The grant faced Lake Illawarra and extended from Brook's Creek to Mullet Creek. Koonawarra was the aboriginal name for the area. "Exmouth" was later secured by Henry Osborne and became part of his central Illawarra estate, extending from Macquarie Rivulet to Mullet Creek, and from Lake Illawarra to the mountains. The name Koonawarra is from the aboriginal word "Koonawarra” meaning "swan”

Shellharbour Hospital is a major district hospital located in the Shellharbour area of New South Wales. It is part of the Southern network of the South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Area Health Service, and receives students from the University of New South Wales and University of Wollongong.

Yallah is a western suburb in the City of Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia, located on the western shore of Lake Illawarra. It contains a mixture of rural, commercial and light industrial areas.

Warilla is a seaside suburb of the City of Shellharbour, Australia within the Wollongong urban area. It is one of the more established areas and is between the suburbs of Mount Warrigal in the west, Barrack Heights and Barrack Point in the south and Lake Illawarra in the north.

Shellharbour City Centre is the central business district of the City of Shellharbour, located in the Illawarra region of New South Wales, Australia (not to be confused with the suburb, Shellharbour). Its name reflects its status as the commercial and administrative centre for the City of Shellharbour local government area, and is home to the Council Administration Centre (located in the Civic Centre), Stockland Shellharbour shopping centre, cinemas and other retail shops. In recent years, apartment buildings have become more common within the district. The suburb was planned and developed to be the commercial heart of the local government area. The concept was developed in the 1970s by council in conjunction with the New South Wales Department of Planning. Planning and development has since been undertaken by council in partnership with Landcom, in an area of land that was formerly part of Blackbutt.
