The Wentworth Estate is a private estate of large houses set in about 7 square kilometres (2.7 sq mi) woodland, in Runnymede, Surrey. It was commenced in the early 1920s. It lies within a gently undulating area of coniferous heathland and interlaces with the Wentworth Golf Club, some properties only being accessed through the club grounds. It is colloquially known as 'The Island'.

Virginia Water railway station serves the village of Virginia Water, in Surrey, England. It is 23 miles 15 chains (37.3 km) down the line from London Waterloo. The station, and all trains serving it, are operated by South Western Railway. The Waterloo to Reading Line and the Chertsey Branch Line join here with the platforms at the junction, as seen in the photograph (taken facing south). Trains from Weybridge and to Reading use either side of a V-shaped platform, allowing cross-platform interchange; the junction of the tracks is at the London end of the station. This station now has ticket barriers operational.

Holloway Sanatorium was an institution for the treatment of those suffering temporary mental illness, situated on 22 acres (9 ha) of aesthetically landscaped grounds near Virginia Water in Surrey, England, about 22 miles (35 km) south-west of Charing Cross. Its largest buildings, including one listed at Grade I, have been restored and supplemented as Virginia Park, a gated residential community featuring a spa complex, gymnasium, multi-purpose sports hall and an all-weather tennis court. Construction was conceived by the wealthy philanthropist Thomas Holloway, which entailed an elaborate Franco-Gothic style by W. H. Crossland, and took place between 1873 and 1885. The imposing exteriors and interiors have a sister building, the Royal Holloway College about a mile north; Sir Nikolaus Pevsner regarded the two as the "summit of High Victorian design". In 1948 the site was transferred to the National Health Service. In the year 2000, after more than a decade of neglect, the buildings were restored and some of the grounds converted to houses which led to the site's renaming. Many of the original features have been preserved involving direction by English Heritage.

Virginia Water is a commuter village in the Borough of Runnymede in northern Surrey, England. It is home to the Wentworth Estate and the Wentworth Club. The area has much woodland and occupies a large minority of the Runnymede district. Its name is shared with the lake on its western boundary within Windsor Great Park. Virginia Water has excellent transport links with London–Trumps Green and Thorpe Green touch the M3, Thorpe touches the M25, and Heathrow Airport is 7 miles (11 km) northeast. Many of the detached houses are on the Wentworth Estate, the home of the Wentworth Club which has four golf courses. The Ryder Cup was first played there. It is also home to the headquarters of the PGA European Tour, the professional golf tour. One of the houses featured in a headline in 1998—General Augusto Pinochet was placed under house arrest having unsuccessfully resisted extradition, the facing of a criminal trial in Chile.In 2011 approximately half of the homes of the postcode district, which is narrower than the current electoral ward, were detached houses. In 2015 Land Registry sales data evinced Virginia Water's single postcode district as the most expensive as to the value of homes nationwide.

The 10th Ryder Cup Matches were held 2–3 October 1953 at Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, west of London. The United States team won its sixth consecutive competition by a score of 61⁄2 to 51⁄2 points.

The 2000 Volvo PGA Championship was the 46th edition of the Volvo PGA Championship, an annual professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was held 26–29 May at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. Colin Montgomerie won by three strokes over Darren Clarke, Andrew Coltart and Lee Westwood to claim his third consecutive Volvo PGA Championship, a feat that had never been achieved before.

The 1991 Volvo PGA Championship was the 37th edition of the Volvo PGA Championship, an annual professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was held 24–27 May at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. The event was won by Seve Ballesteros, defeating Colin Montgomerie in a playoff. It was his second Volvo PGA Championship win.

The 1994 Volvo PGA Championship was the 40th edition of the Volvo PGA Championship, an annual professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was held 27–30 May at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. José María Olazábal won his first Volvo PGA Championship with a one stroke victory over Ernie Els.

The BMW PGA Championship is an annual men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers' Association, and originally called the British PGA Championship.

The 2018 BMW PGA Championship was the 64th edition of the BMW PGA Championship, an annual golf tournament on the European Tour, held 24–27 May at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London.

The 2019 BMW PGA Championship was the 65th edition of the BMW PGA Championship, an annual golf tournament on the European Tour, held 19–22 September at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. Danny Willett, co-leader after three rounds with Jon Rahm, won by three strokes from Rahm with Christiaan Bezuidenhout in third place.

The 2020 BMW PGA Championship was the 66th edition of the BMW PGA Championship, an annual golf tournament on the European Tour, which was originally due to be held 10–13 September at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. On 28 May, the European Tour announced a new revised schedule in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic which rescheduled the tournament to 15–18 October. In August, the tournament was brought forward one week in the schedule to allow for culmination of a second, unofficial "UK Swing", starting with the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open and the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open. The tournament was played from 8–11 October.Tyrrell Hatton won the tournament with a score of 269, 19-under-par, after a final round 67. He finished four strokes ahead of Victor Perez. Perez was 6-under-par after 12 holes of his final round but was 2-over-par for the remaining holes, finishing with a 68.
