Newtyle railway station

Newtyle is a village in the west of Angus, Scotland. It lies eleven miles (eighteen kilometres) north of Dundee in the southwest of Strathmore, between Hatton Hill and Newtyle (Heather Hill) in the Sidlaws. The village sits on gently sloping ground with a northwest aspect. The main communication link is the B954 road. The population was about 800 as of 2004.

Newtyle railway station served the village of Newtyle, Angus, Scotland from 1832 to 1866 on the Dundee and Newtyle Railway.

Hatton Castle stands on the lower part of Hatton Hill, the most easterly of the Sidlaw Hills, to the south of Newtyle in Angus, Scotland. The castle overlooks the wooded Den of Newtyle, and its views extend across Strathmore and include Ben Lawers and Schiehallion as well as the Angus and Glenshee hills. The 16th-century castle was originally built in a typical Scottish "Z plan" tower house design, as a fortified country house or château. There was an earlier castle called Balcraig Castle which stood less than half a mile from the present building, also on Hatton Hill.

Hatton railway station co-served the town of Carnoustie, in the historical county of Forfarshire, Scotland, from 1831 to 1865 on the Dundee and Newtyle Railway.

Meigle Junction railway station served the village of Meigle, Perth and Kinross, Scotland, from 1848 to 1861 on the Scottish Midland Junction Railway.

Alyth Junction railway station served the village of Meigle in the Scottish county of Perth and Kinross. The station was the junction where the Alyth Railway and the Dundee and Newtyle Railway diverged from the Scottish Midland Junction Railway running between Perth and Arbroath. The station is in the Angus council area, just over the border from Meigle.

Newtyle Hill is a mountainous landform in the Sidlaw Hills in Angus, Scotland The vicinity has elements of prehistory including presence of the Eassie Stone, a Pictish stone dating to the Dark Ages. It is not to be confused with a hill of the same name 2 km east of Dunkeld.

The B954 road is a public highway in Angus, Scotland which generally runs north to south, connecting the settlement of Dykends to the northwestern part of the city of Dundee. The road runs near the Meigle Museum, where a collection of Pictish stones is exhibited, and somewhat to the west of the Eassie Stone, a Pictish stone dating to about 600 AD. The road has been a subject of public controversy, having undergone debate over its speed limit; in particular, a speed limit of 30 to 40 miles per hour was considered to protect pedestrian safety, particularly for children crossing the highway. The proposal was not adopted at the 16 September 2008 meeting.

Balcraig Castle was built on lands given to the Oliphants by King Robert the Bruce circa 1317.

Kinpurnie Castle is a stately home located 12 miles (19 km) west of Dundee, close to Newtyle, near Blairgowrie, Angus in Scotland. The Kinpurnie estate was historically a property owned by William Oliphant, Lord of Aberdalgie by grant from King Robert the Bruce in 1317. It was later owned by James Stuart-Mackenzie, who built an observatory on Kinpurnie Hill. Kinpurnie was one of the estates purchased by shipping magnate Sir Charles Cayzer for his sons. He acquired it from the Earl of Wharncliffe’s trustees. Various ships of the Cayzer's Castle line were named after the Kinpurnie Castle. (This is incorrect, the Castle line was owned by Sir Donald Currie. There is however a connection as in 1956 the Cayzer's Clan Line merged with Union-Castle Line to form The British & Commonwealth Shipping Company, of which Sir Nicholas Cayzer was chairman) Kinpurnie Castle was built in 1907, in the Scots baronial style. It was designed by architect Patrick Thoms, of Thoms and Wilkie of Dundee, who trained with Charles Ower. The chimneypiece in the drawing room came from Ralston House. Ornamental plasterwork was done by the Bromsgrove Guild, and oak panelling by Methven, Hyslop & Co of Dundee. The estate also includes Thriepley House. In 2012, following the death of Sir James Cayzer, the estate was put up for sale. The castle was inherited by Sir James’ heir, Lord Rotherwick and sold in July 2015 for £2.09 million.

Long Loch is a small lowland freshwater loch within the Sidlaw Hills in Angus. It is 1.8 miles south of the village of Newtyle, three miles east-south-east of Coupar Angus and 2 miles directly north of Lundie. It is peculiar in shape, resembling a dog's body without legs and is on a north-east to south-west orientation.
