Steiria (Attica)

Porto Rafti (Greek: Πόρτο Ράφτη), officially named Limin Markopoulou (Λιμήν Μαρκοπούλου), is a seaside resort town located in East Attica, Greece. Porto Rafti's main source of income is tourism and winemaking. It is part of the municipality of Markopoulo Mesogaias. In the 2011 census data, its permanent population was 9,686. Today, the permanent population is believed to be closer to 15,000, peaking at 100,000 every year during the summer season.

Cytherus or Kytheros (Ancient Greek: Κύθηρρος or Κύθηρος), also known as Cytherum or Kytheron (Κύθηρον), was one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, and afterwards a deme. Pausanias states that the nymphs of the river Cytherus in Elis were called Ionides from Ion, the son of Gargettus, when he migrated from Athens to Elis.The site of Cytherus is located near modern Pousi Kaloyerou.

The Brauron Archaeological Museum is a museum in Markopoulo Mesogeias, Greece. Much of the collection is derived from excavations in the Sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron. Of note is a statue representing a small girl, a so-called "bear" (arktoi) (Medvedicka).

Brauron (/ˈbrɔːrɒn/;Ancient Greek: Βραυρών) was one of the twelve cities of ancient Attica, but never mentioned as a deme, though it continued to exist down to the latest times. It was situated on or near the eastern coast of Attica, between Steiria and Halae Araphenides, near the river Erasinus. Brauron is celebrated on account of the worship of Artemis Brauronia, in whose honour a festival was celebrated in this place. This site includes the remains of a temple, a stoa (colonnaded walkway), and a theatre, providing insights into the religious practices and social life of ancient Greece. Its significance as a religious and cultural site can be further understood through the exploration of its archeological remains and historical accounts.

Philaidae or Philaidai (Ancient Greek: Φιλαΐδαι) was a deme of ancient Attica, which appears to have been near Brauron, since it is said to have derived its name from Philaeus, the son of the Telamonian Ajax, who dwelt in Brauron. Philaïdae was the deme of Peisistratus.Its site is located about 0.25 miles (0.40 km) west of the basilica at Brauron.

Prasiae or Prasiai (Ancient Greek: Πρασίαι) was a deme of ancient Attica on the east coast, between Potamus and Steiria, with an excellent harbour, from which the Theoria or sacred procession used to sail. Here was a temple of Apollo, and also the tomb of Erysichthon of Attica, who died at this place on his return from Delos.The ruins of the deme are seen on the north-east side of the bay. The harbour, now called Porto Rafti, is the best on the eastern coast of Attica, and is both deep and capacious. The entrance of the harbour is more than a mile in breadth; and in the centre of the entrance there is a rocky islet, upon which is a colossal statue of white marble, from which the harbour has derived its modem name, since it is commonly supposed to bear some resemblance to a tailor (ῥάφτης) at work. The statue evidently belongs to the Roman period, and probably to the first or second century after the Christian era. In the middle of the bay there is a rocky promontory with ruins of the middle ages upon it, which promontory Ludwig Ross supposes to be the Coroneia of Stephanus of Byzantium.

The Markopoulo Olympic Equestrian Centre hosted the equestrian events at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. The venue is located at Markópoulo on the outskirts of the Athens suburbs. It was completed in December 2003 and officially opened on August 12, 2004, shortly before the beginning of the competition. The capacity of the venue is 10,000 for the Jumping Event, 8,100 seats for the Dressage and 15,000 seats for the Cross-Country Event.In June 2007, Markopoulo Equestrian Centre held the three super special stages of the 54th Acropolis Rally. The site is also home to horse racing competitions and hosted the FEI European Jumping Championship for Children in June 2008.

Angele (Ancient Greek: Ἀγγελή) was a deme of ancient Attica, of the phyle of Pandionis, sending two, three, or four delegates to the Athenian Boule. Its site is located near modern Angelisi.

Greek National Road 85 is a national highway of Greece. It connects Rafina with Lavrio via Porto Rafti.

Myrrhinus or Myrrinous (Ancient Greek: Μυρρινοῦς) was a deme of ancient Attica. It lay to the east of Prasiae. Artemis Colaenis was worshipped at Myrrhinus; and in one of the inscriptions recovered at Merenda mention is made of a temple of Artemis Colaenis.The site of Myrrhinus is located near modern Merenda.The recent excavation at the new Equestrian Centre at Merenda, Markopoulo, where the ancient 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘴 of Myrrhinous is located, gives some idea of the aspect of the centre of the aforesaid 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘪. Here, in the middle of the flat space lying between the foothills of the homonymous mountain and the low vine-planted hills, a peripteral temple, probably dedicated to Artemis Kolainis, one of the most important in the city, and a sanctuary of Aphrodite have been brought to light at the crossroad of the two central arteries of the 𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘴, which are lined at intervals by cemeteries, classical tomb enclosures and two sanctuaries. Identified and excavated around the temple, at some distance, were three porticoed buildings of public character, in no particular order, the sanctuary of a phratry, and very close behind it, a monumental fountain that had been reconstructed in Roman times, while farmhouses extended on the small hills around.
